These plaques which are scattered throughout street corners or the historical center of Merida are reproductions of colonial streets signs. The original intentions were to give toponyms of the streets of the city in terms that the local Maya inhabitants could understand in addition to teach Spanish to the largely Yucatec speaking people. The pictures are representative of a recognizable feature in the area, in this case my best guess is that a strong man lived in the area of this intersection. Other signs include a rooster for a presumable annoyingly loud bird in the area and an old lady indicating the proximity of one of the town's oldest women. Although the signs are reproductions they are apparently very similar to the originals and are geographically correctly placed.
