Merger of a fork on Fishhook Creek as weather moves in with stiff wind. Not the best for a slow shutter. Thanks for looking and have a great new week.
On a beautiful April 19, 1990, a westbound Santa Fe intermodal train hustles across impressive Canyon Diablo Bridge at Canyon Diablo, Arizona. A quartet of GE B40-8s (Nos. 7419, 7418, 7440 and 7421) along with EMD SD45-2 No. 5808 still dressed in SPSF “Kodachrome” merger colors provide the horsepower.
The CP KCS merger became official today, and this will most likely never be repeated again. The two have nothing to do with each other.
By 1929, Packard controlled half the world's prestige car trade.
His cars were associated with Hollywood and the American High Society and was the equivalent of the English Rolls Royce.
By 1953 the variety of models had become far too great for the Packard factory to operate profitably.
Therefor Packed merged with Studebaker in 1954 to compete with the "Detroits Big Three".
In 1955 the new models of this merger were introduced, but because the technicians did not had time enough to solve the technical problems of the cars, the reliability of the car brand fell drastically and sales plummeted.
This was the rerason that the once famous car brand disappeared.
Today this model of 1929 is a highly sought- after collector's item and the highest resale value is $ 115.500,00
His engine was a naturally aspirated petrol engine which was virtually vibration- free.
The car was equiped with a 3- speed gearbox and had a cylinder capacity of 5.2 liters and was equiped with 8 cylinders, each with two valves.
Despite this large displacement, the engine only had an output of 90 HP/ 67 Kw!
Anyway, it is a real thrill to be able to see such an old vehicle in its full glory........
Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC is the parent company of the BNSF Railway (formerly the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway). The company is an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, which is controlled by investor Warren Buffett.
History
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation was incorporated in 1993 to facilitate the merger of Burlington Northern, Incorporated, parent of the Burlington Northern Railroad, and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation, which owned the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (Santa Fe). The corporate merger was consummated on September 22, 1995, at which point shareholders of the previous companies became shareholders of BNSF and the two companies became wholly owned subsidiaries of BNSF. In December 1996, the two holding companies and two railroads were formally merged, and in January 1998 the remaining intermediate holding company was folded into the railroad.
Robert D. Krebs of Santa Fe Pacific was president of BNSF from the merger until 1999, chief executive from the merger until 2000, and chairman from 1997 until 2002. He was succeeded in all three positions by Matthew K. Rose.
On November 3, 2009, Berkshire Hathaway made a $26 billion offer to buy the remaining 77.4% of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation it did not already own, valuing the purchase at $34 billion. The deal, which including Berkshire's previous investment and the assumption of $10 billion in Burlington Northern debt brings the total value to $44 billion. Consummated February 12, 2010, it is the largest acquisition in Berkshire Hathaway's history.
The deal was structured so that the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation would merge with and into R Acquisition Company, LLC, an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. The deal closed on February 12, 2010, and at the same time, the now merged company changed its name to Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC that remains an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.

A Union Pacific coal train with 107 empties takes a tour of the D&RGW through the Red Narrows of Spanish Fork Canyon on Aug. 9, 1998. Leading the charge is Chicago & North Western AC4400CW No. 8830, followed by Union Pacific SD9043MAC No. 8010, and Southern Pacific AC4400CW No. 122.
The river Mandalselva is a salmon river that flows through the municipality with its river mouth just outside the town. Mandal has many small, white-painted wooden houses, which is typical of towns at the South Coast of Norway (Sørlandet).
The town of Mandal was established as a ladested municipality on 1 January 1838. On 1 July 1921, a part of the neighboring municipality of Halse og Harkmark (population: 221) that was next to the town of Mandal was merged with the town.
During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee.
On 1 January 1964, the town of Mandal (population: 5,446) was merged with the rural municipalities of Halse og Harkmark (population: 3,676) and Holum (population: 1,127) to form a new, large municipality of Mandal.
Mergers can get pretty confusing. Sante Fe and Burlington Northern colors, Great Northern, C&S, and BNSF markings all found on these two old diesels bound, probably, for the scrap yard.
EMD locomotives from the UP-SP merger of 1996 pull a Pocatello, Idaho to Yermo, California manifest through Stockton, Utah on July 23, 1999. Leading the charge are UP SD60M No. 6275, SP SD40M-2 No. 8670, and DRGW SD40T-2 No. 5353.
view of old town from Hrad Český Krumlov (Český Krumlov Castle) and Plášťový Most (Cloak Bridge)
Český Krumlov (German: Krumau or Böhmisch Krumau, also spelt Krummau) is a town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 13,000 inhabitants. It is known as a tourist centre, which is among the most visited places in the country. The historic centre with the Český Krumlov Castle complex is protected by law as an urban monument reservation, and since 1992, it has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its well-preserved Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
The historic town centre with the castle complex has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, one of the first in the country. The town preserves the street layout from the Middle Ages. Most of the architecture of the old town and castle dates from the 13th through 17th centuries; the town's structures are mostly in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The historical core, today Vnitřní město ("Inner Town") town part, is within a horseshoe meander of the river, with the old Latrán town part and castle complex on the other side of the Vltava.
The centre of Old Town is formed by Svornosti Square. Its main landmark is the town hall from 1597. It was created by merger of three Gothic houses with arcades, whose façade was merged with a Renaissance attic.
The town has preserved only few fragments of the town fortifications, formed by one town gate built in 1598–1602, a bastion from 1505, and remains of zwinger walls.
CP 645 winds its way through Maple Lake (hey I did a different angle this time at least) with a merger partner on point. I've always wanted to shoot a KCS MAC leading a train, so I was pretty happy with this catch. With the CPKC merger now imminent, it's weird to think this will be considered "home" rails for units like this. Oh yeah, check out that goofy numberboard on the engineer's side too.
Two white faced ibises appear to become one. One of many mergers occurring daily at the San Louis National Wildlife Refuge.
Southern Pacific and Chicago & North Western locomotives pull 90 Intermountain Power - Skyline coal empties on the D&RGW through Gilluly, Utah on a sunny Sept. 7, 1996 morning in the Wasatch. The big UP-SP merger was four days away.

Years after the Chessie and Seaboard systems merger you could still find solid sets of pre merger power. Case in point a four unit set of Seaboard B36-7's with train #135 on B&O's main line at Sterling, Ohio on 4/23/1989. Sterling Tower in the back ground was the crossing of B&O's and Erie's Chicago main lines.
With the Union Pacific-Southern Pacific merger less than two weeks away, a Los Angeles Harbor, California to Arco, Colorado coal empty ascends a 2.18% grade through 7 and 8 degree curves above Gilluly the afternoon of Aug. 31, 1996.

A quartet of Southern Pacific EMDs pull an OANSF (Oakland - Kansas City) auto rack train through the horseshoe above Gilluly, Utah at sundown on Aug. 11, 1996. Southern Pacific had 30 days of independence remaining before the big merger with UP. We were all in disbelief the merger would really happen, to no avail.
In February 1987, it was looking like the Southern Pacific/Santa Fe merger was going to go down in flames. My friend Mike Devlin wanted to get as many shots of locomotives painted for SPSF as possible. A trip at the end of the month for the annual Winterail show in Stockton would give him a rare opportunity to seek Santa Fe units in the merger scheme.
At the time, Santa Fe was known for running its hotshot 991 train a bit later on Saturday mornings than during the week. This enabled daylight photography of the train in the East Bay. Before we went to Stockton, we drove to Chico's Richmond Yard, with a plan to catch the 991 a few times as it departed the Bay Area.
For Mike. a huge bonus of our chase was finding "Kodachrome" SD45-2 ATSF 5821 on the point. Our last shot of the train before we headed for the show in Stockton was this view. The 991 is passing the depot at Pittsburg. A roadswitcher's power set is tied up in front of the structure.
I saw this dandelion clock in my garden and spent an hour or so photographing it in the house during lock down much to my partners amusement. In the end I came up with this creation.
After Amtrak, the Westbound Hastings local passes through Denton. A merger meet in 2023 is kinda neat.
A year ago to nearly the day I shot an outbound KCS M-CXSH leaving Baton Rouge, LA, right at sunrise. At that point the former Louisiana and Arkansas Railroad was still the Kansas City Southern. Fast forward a year, and the Canadian Pacific/Kansas City Southern railroad merger is complete. Now CPKC train M269-18 is running over the Mississippi into Lobdell, Louisiana behind some Canadian power. This day the train is lead by a very clean matched set of Canadian Pacific SD70ACU's. Getting a pairing of these in the deep south was a rare occurrence pre-merger. Now scenes like this may become more common. Getting the M269 here in daylight is a toss up with their call time usually being between 9pm and 12am out of New Orleans. A late arrival the previous day meant we were treated to a great scene as these guys left for Latanier yard near Alexandria, Louisiana.
Thanks for looking!
Southern Pacific SD40M-2 No. 8694 leads the "Dirt Train" through the Salt Lake Valley near Riverton, Utah the afternoon of June 1, 1998. The Roper-based LUH44 local moved post-consumer waste, construction waste, and contaminated soils for burial at the ECDC Environmental Landfill near East Carbon City, Utah.
Since being established in 1881, the Canadian Pacific Railway has been a vital part of the North American way of life. For 109 years, CP strictly operated in Canada with only trackage rights into the US before getting full control of the SOO LINE in 1990, accessing their own trackage into the busy rail hub of Chicago, Illinois and vise versa. Now 33 years later, they have merged with Kansas City Southern now having trackage from Canada to Mexico without leaving their own rails. The face of the Canadian Pacific that’s had many names, such as Canadian Pacific Railway, CPRAIL, CPRAIL System, and once again, Canadian Pacific. Time will tell how much they’ll change their current imagine, as they’ve already inter-graded the “CPKC” initials into their company regime around the countries. As of 23:59 of April 13th, 2023, The Canadian Pacific Railway has merged with the Kansas City Southern Railway.
With that said, looking back at simpler times of Autumn 2023 along the mighty Mississippi River, the Royal Canadian Business Train is freshly loaded with the company President / CEO Keith Cruel as they sneak through the S curve along the former DME in the small town of Brownsville, Minnesota with the beautifully painted pair of FP9As and FP9B (CP 1401/4106/1900) heading south for Kansas City for a major meeting with KCS management on the CP Marquette Sub. Taken: 10-20-23
My fanatic sense for the Canadian Pacific became when I was just 5-6 years old, ridding cross country with my family on VIA RAIL’s Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto. For as young as I was, my favorite movie at the time was Silver Streak 1976, the same current train set VIA uses today. I guess you could really say I was a kid in a candy store, ridding my favorite train from my favorite railroad, even in its new ownership. As a fan looking from the outside in, the transition with KCS will be quite a weird one, we can only hope the image of CP won’t change and KCS will be just like every other railroad that’s been merged, a thing of the past…..but not forgotten. But lets not forget that the CP some of us know and love is also changing, in my eyes for the worse but time will tell how much they change their corporate image that I’ve been a fan of for than 18 years..
SP 9793 leads an interesting consist that includes an Amtrak F40PH and a Montana Rail Link SD40. The train is headed south on Union Pacific's Lufkin Sub in Shepherd, TX. A little over a year had passed since Southern Pacific was merged with Union Pacific, yet widespread service issues remained. During this time of transition, the railroad was chronically short of power and crews. Amtrak F40PHs were leased and pressed into freight service. The MRL SD40 was most likely leased for the same reason.

Even after Union Pacific’s merger of Southern Pacific, for several years, locomotives for the West local out of Denver on the former Rio Grande Moffat Tunnel route was a pair of home road GP30s. They ran west on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I tried to capture them as much as I could. Only problem is that the local rarely ventured west of Rocky and Rocky Spur.
On January 6, 1998, that was going to change. The crew of an eastbound UP freight died on the hours at Plainview, and it was decided that the West local would head up to Plain light engines to bring the train down to Rocky where they’d send a van out to pick up the crew. Finally, a chance to get the GP30s in some mountain scenery! The train, led by venerable Rio Grande GP30 Nos. 3006 and 3003, pops out of Tunnel 1 in fresh snow and afternoon sun, Mars light leading the way—almost like the “good old days.”
Chicago & North Western C44-9W No. 8641 and two Southern Pacific SD40T-2s pull a merchandise train east through Echo Canyon at Hanging Rock the morning of May 23, 1999. In 1948, this giant mass of composite rock came tumbling down the hillside below the cliffs and came to rest between the Lincoln Highway and the Union Pacific tracks. Hanging Rock was determined to be stable at that location, and was left right where it landed.
Just hours after the last spike ceremony in Kansas City commemorating the merger, my first Day 1 train is CPKC Train B-KCSH-15 behind the KCS F-Units screaming south towards Shreveport with an abbreviated consist on the CPKC Pittsburg Sub. Several of the business cars were set out at Knoche, headed to shops to receive their new paint scheme.

we come together two by two
like animals in the zoo
not knowing quite what to do
we love each other in so different a way
that we say,
"ok ok, and oh what the hay."
we come together two by two
like animals in the zoo
and so we merge with the grandest of schemes
it seems
lets hope and pray
and say,
"ok, ok, and oh what the hay."

Nebliger Montag Nachmittag. Nachdem die Temperatur etwas nach oben gestiegen ist, musste ich raus. Es hat sich gelohnt.
Shelbiana, KY may not be anywhere on the proposed CPKC system map, but that doesn't stop two representatives of the planned merger roads from converging at the east end of Shelby Yard. The KCS unit is the rear DPU on a B650 empty ethanol train from Charlotte that will run north later in the evening. The CP unit of course is the B651 that I've been following all morning.
BN C30-7 5077 approaches Siberia, CA leading westbound trailers on the former Santa Fe main line. I remember being kinda miffed about the leader when I shot this, but I can say for sure that I've gotten over it.

Massey Ferguson Limited is an American agricultural machinery manufacturer. The company was established in 1953 through the merger of farm equipment makers Massey-Harris of Canada and the Ferguson Company of the United Kingdom. It was based in Brantford, Ontario, until 1988. The company transferred its headquarters in 1997 to Buffalo, New York, U.S. before it was acquired by AGCO, the new owner of its former competitor Allis-Chalmers. Massey Ferguson is among several brands in a portfolio produced and marketed by American industrial agricultural equipment conglomerate AGCO and a major seller in international markets around the world.
In 1847, Daniel Massey established the Newcastle Foundry and Machine Manufactory in what is now Newcastle, Clarington, Ontario, Canada. The company made some of the world's first mechanical threshers, at first by assembling parts from the United States, but eventually designing and building its own equipment. Daniel Massey's son, Hart Massey, subsequently renamed the enterprise as the Massey Manufacturing Co. In 1879, the company moved to Toronto, where it soon became one of the city's leading employers. The huge complex of factories, consisting of a 4.4-hectare (11-acre) site with plant and head office at 915 King Street West (now part of Liberty Village), became one of the best-known features of the city. The company expanded further and began to sell its products internationally. Through extensive advertising campaigns, it became one of the most well-known brands in Canada. A labor shortage throughout the country also helped to make the firm's mechanized equipment very attractive.
In 1891, the Massey Manufacturing Co. merged with A. Harris, Son and Company to form Massey-Harris Limited, which became the largest agricultural equipment maker in the British Empire. Massey-Harris made threshing machines and reapers, as well as safety bicycles, introducing a shaft-driven model in 1898. In 1910, Massey-Harris acquired the Johnston Harvester Company of Batavia, New York, making it one of Canada's first multinational firms. The company's early tractor models included the 20 horsepower Massey-Harris GP 15/22 (1930–36), 25 horsepower 'Massey-Harris Pacemaker' (1936–1939), 35 horsepower Model 101 (1938–1942), Massey-Harris Pony, Model 20, Model 81, and Model 744.
Grain harvesting was revolutionized by Massey engineer Tom Carroll in 1938, with the world's first self-propelled combine — the No. 20. It was too heavy and expensive for extensive mass production, but served as a guide for the design of the lighter and less costly No. 21 which was tested in 1940, and put on sale in 1941. The Massey-Harris No. 21 Combine was commemorated with a Canada Post stamp on June 8, 1996. E.P. Taylor, one of C.D. Howe's dollar-a-year men, joined the board of directors in 1942, and Eric Phillips joined management in 1946.
The final generation of Massey-Harris tractors, introduced immediately after World War II, included the 25-horsepower M-H 22 series, the 35 horsepower M-H 33 series, the 45 horsepower M-H 44 series and the 55 horsepower M-H 55 series. In 1952, the M-H 22 was replaced by the M-H 23 Mustang. In 1955, the 30-horsepower Massey-Harris 50 was introduced after the merger that created Massey-Harris-Ferguson. It was based on the Ferguson TO-35 and was also produced as the F-40 for Ferguson dealers. The MH-50 was available in several configurations: utility, high-crop utility, or row-crop with a choice of single, tricycle, or wide adjustable front ends. In 1956, the M-H 33 was replaced by the MH 333, while the M-H 44 was replaced by the M-H 444 and the M-H 55 was replaced by the M-H 555. These tractors were commonly known as the "triple series" and were mechanically similar to their predecessors, but featured new styling that included a slightly different hood design, chrome trim on the grill and hood, and a different color scheme. They were also available with power steering, live power take-off (PTO) and hydraulics. The Massey Harris triple series tractors remained in production until 1958.

The LJP45 'Dirt Train' local power displays a nice merger combination of power nearly a decade after Union Pacific absorbed the Southern Pacific and its Rio Grande subsidiary. Leading is UP 2776 former SP SD40M-2 8700 (it is a circa 1994 M-K Mountaintop rebuild from an SD45 originally blt. Feb. 1967 as CNW 901), in the middle is UP 3747 and SD40-2 blt. Feb. 1980 new for the railroad, and trailing is the famous DRGW 5371 the last unpatched original Grande unit an SD40T-2 blt. Aug. 1975.

These two roads worked well together in the years prior to the BNSF merger. Many times MRL used their power to move trains when BN was power short at Laurel.
One of the interesting combinations is climbing the hill west of Livingston through the site of a tunnel daylighted by Northern Pacific.

Djúpivogur is a small town and former municipality located on a peninsula in the Austurland region in eastern Iceland, near the island of Papey and on the fjord Berufjörður. The municipality was formed by the merger of rural communities Berunes, Buland, and Geithellur on October 1, 1992. The coastline consists of three fjords Berufjörður, Hamarsfjörður, and Álftafjörður. The town of Djúpivogur is located on a peninsula between Berufjörður and Hamarsfjörður.
Approximately 900 m west of the town is a work of art named "Eggin í Gleðivík" by Sigurður Guðmundsson. The work is a replica of the eggs of 34 nesting birds in the area, and was installed in the summer of 2009.
By the early nineteenth century, Djúpivogur was 'a tiny port with a Danish colonial trading base'. Hans Jonatan, who had been a slave in Copenhagen, escaped there and became one of Iceland's first people of colour.
Djúpivogur is the first and only Cittaslow town in Iceland. Cittaslow's goals include improving the quality of life in towns by slowing down its overall pace, especially in a city's use of spaces and the flow of life and traffic through them. Cittaslow is part of a cultural trend known as the slow movement.
Djúpivogur is home to Langabúð, one of Iceland's oldest commercial buildings. The south end dates back to 1790, but the building only took on its present appearance when the northern part was constructed in 1850. Langabúð served many purposes, being a warehouse and slaughterhouse. Today, it is home to a café, the heritage museum and an exhibition on the Icelandic sculptor Ríkarður Jónsson, who was native to the village.
In 2020, the municipality of Djúpavogshreppur merged with Borgarfjarðarhreppur, Fljótsdalshérað and Seyðisfjarðarkaupstaður to form the new municipality of Múlaþing.
