Today on my walk around Oberon I also saw Bill the music man and got a few records/vinyls here is Three Australian artist on the Left is Kylie Minogue middle is Mental as anything and the right one is Kids in the Kitchen!
Peter, Coco and Susan O'Doherty by Marina Finlay (Born 1961), oil on canvas.
Peter O'Doherty is a painter and musician. The bass player for Mental as Anything from 1977 to 2000, he is currently a singer-songwriter with the band Dog Trumpet. His wife Susan is a painter and mixed media assemblage artist who has exhibited widely across Australia.
I have known Peter and Susan for many years. They are fellow artists and dear friends. I seated them to show their closeness but also their strong individuality. Their cat Coco links them yet creates a space between them.
The painting in the background is inspired by one of Susan's. I really loved the patterns so I painted a variation of her theme to suit the picture, says Marina Finlay.

The Mentals never fail to disappoint and they didn't this time at The Concourse in Sydney. They played most of their classics in an intimate environment and even slipped in a new song or two which were not out of place. A great intro for the Moving Pictures show; a great night of entertainment.

I think Vivid 2024's best is Chris O'Doherty's aka Reg Mombassa's 'Gumscape with road and creatures' projection on Customs House, which features retro-futuristic robots, one-eyed koalas and these skeletons, a likely nod to Reg's and Mental as Anything's 'Spirit got lost' music video which was a hit for them in the 1980's.
One of the visuals was commissioned in 2013 to hide building works at the rear of the Opera House, and has been adapted for Vivid this year by Spinifex Group.
On another note, it was a spartan 'light walk' from the Opera House to Darling Harbour yesterday. Until last year the NSW government prioritised encouraging visits from overseas through events including Vivid, but a $100 million cut to Destination NSW's budget (from $382 million last year to $273 million this year) has had an obvious effect. A visitor to Sydney would need to go to Lightscape too to feel it was worthwhile...

An annual event on January 1st 2011
The expressions on some of the dookers' faces suggests how cold the water is at South Queensferry , the lady on the left seemed to be enjoying the coldness as she was in the water for over half an hour. The big burly Lifeboatman , in full survival suit , looks on , what must he be thinking! I would imagine that in January , in Scotland , the sea temperatures would be as low as 7 degrees C / 44 degrees
For those who do not recognise the Scots work Dook , it means A Dip or to have a Wade in the water

What an incredible afternoon of live music at Nerang RSL with the incomparable Mental As Anything rocking the house of over 500+ punters. First saw this group back in 1976 in Sydney when I was completing my BA Dip Ed - and boy, did I get an education from these guys back then! And today, 43 years later, I was up there with the best of them moving to hypnotic sounds of Greedy Smith and his great band.
Opening for the Mentals was Gold Coast local Nick Waters who most certainly got the huge crowd into the mood for when Mental As Anything took to the stage.
"A popular urban myth concerns a group of art students who passed themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The deception worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as Mental as Anything. Nearly two decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop. A self-explanatory single to reflect their success, The Nips Are Getting Bigger, rose through the charts as did their fundamental understanding of the old adage that 'for every action there is a reaction'. Ahead lay a very lengthy pub crawl which only the accomplished could survive."
A big shout out to Nerang RSL for a truly memorable afternoon of live music on the Gold Coast.
