Church of All Saints, Mendham Suffolk- there has been a church here since Norman times when it was connected with the Priory of St Mary the Virgin founded in 1140 by William de Huntingfield as a cell for Cluniac monks of Castle Acre which enjoyed royal patronage with an endowment from King Stephen and a stained glass window from Mary Tudor sister of Henry Vlll. Following the Dissolution of 1537 the lands went to the crown and were subsequently acquired by Richard Freston a tenant of Charles Brandon Duke of Suffolk, whose son and family have brasses here. www.flickr.com/photos/52219527@N00/9544284933/

The Morris County Freeholders conducted its regular public meeting Sept. 26 in Mendham Borough, continuing the board’s tradition of taking some of its meetings “on the road.” The freeholders began the practice in 2007 as a means of staying in close contact with the county’s municipal officials to foster an exchange of ideas and to gain direct knowledge of the issues that municipal officials are facing. Pictured left to right are freeholders Margaret Nordstrom and Thomas Mastrangelo, Administrator John Bonanni, Clerk of the Board Diane Ketchum, Freeholder John Murphy, County Counsel Daniel O’Mullan, and freeholders Ann Grossi and Gene Feyl.

The Priory lands went to the Crown after the Dissolution, and the first year of Edward VI. 1546, he granted the advowson of Sileham and its appurtenances, this manor of Wichendon, and all the tithes and glebes, in Mendham, Nedham,and Metfield, late in the tenure of Richard Freston, Esq. to the said Richard and his heirs who upon this grant, came and settled in the manor-house here;

This Richard, in 1534 appears to be treasurer and a great favourite of Charles Brandon Duke of Suffolk; and an intimate acquaintance of Sir Robert Budde who was master of Wingfield college,and chaplain to his grace; and by his interest it was, that he obtained several great grants from the Crown among which he had Denston's manor in Nedham, and many lands belonging to Mendham priory: he was afterwards knighted, and lies buried with Dame Anne Coke his wife, in Mendham chancel, for whom there is a monument against the east part of the north wall, with the arms of Freston impaling Coke, - Church of All Saints, Mendham Suffolk

The porch of knapped flint is 15th C. The entrance arch and the three image niches surrounding it were "renewed" in the 19th C. I don't know when the wooden door was added. It is surely, in my experience, one of the most unfortunate "improvements" to a structure of this period.
