Green Hills Memorial Cemetary in Rancho Palos Verdes, remembering those who fought for us, please do not forget them!
I made this photo of Veterans' tombstones on Memorial Day 2010. The place was the Golden Gate National Cemetery, a military cemetery in San Bruno California. In the United States, Memorial Day is May 31. It is a national holiday observed on the last Monday of May, if May 31 does not fall on a Monday. I shot this using my Canon Powershot SX20 that I was using in 2010. A cemetery worker told me various organizations place over 100,000 flags each year for Memorial Day.
I made this photo at Golden Gate National Cemetery in May of 2010 on Memorial Day. A groundskeeper there told me various individuals and groups placed around 110,000 flags near each of the headstones for Memorial Day. GGNC is a somber place for those who visit or view it from various nearby roadways. Like the military, the cemetery denotes order and uniformity. The view in this photo is of headstones. In other parts of the cemetery, graves are marked with grass level grave stones in evening light. The names of the service members are engraved on the front of the headstones. The military spouse is also entitled to burial in the cemetery and the spouse's name is engraved on the back of the headstone. This photo depicts a visitor wearing a military jacket with a United States Flag patch on his shoulder; probably wishing a friend a peaceful rest. I shot this using my Canon Powershot SX20 that I was using at the time.

Captured this image at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno California - just south of San Francisco - during Memorial Day 2009. The photo would look similar this Memorial Day 2015 as the weather is overcast and chilly.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while in service in the country's armed forces - observed the last Monday in May. (source: Wikipedia).
Over 100,000 flags are placed by Boy Scouts of America and other groups and individual volunteers on a designated day in advance of Memorial Day.
With the American Flag flying at the porch entrance and Adirondack Chairs on the lawn, it would seem that this family is ready for summer.

A swag of red, white, and blue bunting over the porch stairs marks Memorial Day at this home in Glen Ridge NJ.
A flagpole at the center of the veterans section of Glendale Cemetery is flown at half mast as the nation remembers and mourns the loss of those who served their nation.
The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.
