La Mémé (La Maison Médicale, The Medical House) is the most famous building of Lucien Kroll (born in Belgium in 1929). Lucien Kroll was asked by university students to design their campus in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert (east of Brussels). It was the late 1960ies: the students and university staff were actively involved in the design process, collectively deliberating about the architecture of the buildings and metro station –so as to produce an architecture that was thought to be adaptable by its users over time.

The random nature of the facades is deliberate. The colour and location of window frames were decided by playing cards. This random nature is meant to reflect a more spontaneous and evolving architecture, as the one of favelas that Kroll considered more « inhabitable » than many new towns designed by famous architects.

Although it may appear as somehow in bad state through the picture, the place is still full of life…

I'm not tagging anyone. I just wanted something to do before I even finished my first cup of coffee today.

Additionally, I think my band is an ironic hipster experiment, shunned by all because they just tried too damn hard, and their CD smacked of production values and effort.

The real reason they broke up though, is that two of them wore the same cowboy shirt two sizes too small one day, and were unable to get past the fact that they had found the same thrift store full of deadstock, thus negating how obscure the other was.

Lorsqu'Anselm Kiefer s'est rendu en Inde au début des années 1990, il a observé des tours de brique qui s'élevaient vers le ciel. Essentielles à la fabrication de la brique crue, les mêmes briques cuites à l'intérieur des tours ont été utilisées pour les construire. Dans un processus de création et de destruction, les tours ont ensuite été progressivement démantelées au fur et à mesure que les briques étaient nécessaires pour les construire ailleurs. Fasciné par la résonance métaphorique de ce cycle de naissance et de décadence, l'œuvre de Kiefer adopte l'imagerie des grandes constructions architecturales, monuments de l'ambition et de son effondrement. Elle rappelle les premières civilisations de l'ancienne Mésopotamie et reflète l'histoire de Kiefer qui a grandi en Allemagne au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Sur le domaine de Voorlinden à Wassenaar se trouvent deux tours d'Anselm Kiefer, mesurant respectivement 15 et 17,5 mètres de haut. Enfant, l'artiste allemand construisait des tours à partir de morceaux de gravats trouvés dans des ruines. Il a construit ces tours en utilisant des blocs de béton armé. Le titre fait référence à Jéricho, l'une des plus anciennes villes du monde, dont la chute et la reconstruction sont décrites dans la Bible. L'œuvre de Kiefer présente souvent des histoires bibliques, mais aussi des thèmes tels que la destruction et la reconstruction. L’artiste voit une certaine beauté dans les ruines : « Pour moi, elles ne représentent pas une fin, mais offrent l’espoir d’un nouveau départ. »

When Anselm Kiefer visited India in the early 1990s, he observed brick towers reaching into the sky. Essential to the manufacture of mud brick, the same bricks fired inside the towers were used to build them. In a process of creation and destruction, the towers were then gradually dismantled as bricks were needed to build them elsewhere. Fascinated by the metaphorical resonance of this cycle of birth and decay, Kiefer's work adopts the imagery of great architectural constructions, monuments to ambition and its collapse. It recalls the early civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia and reflects Kiefer's own story of growing up in Germany in the aftermath of World War II.

On the Voorlinden estate in Wassenaar, there are two towers by Anselm Kiefer, measuring 15 and 17.5 meters high respectively. As a child, the German artist built towers from pieces of rubble found in ruins. He constructed these towers using reinforced concrete blocks. The title refers to Jericho, one of the oldest cities in the world, whose fall and reconstruction are described in the Bible. Kiefer's work often features biblical stories, but also themes such as destruction and reconstruction. The artist sees a certain beauty in ruins: "For me, they don't represent an end, but offer the hope of a new beginning."
