The interior os Melbourne's St. Patrick's Cathedral is bathed in a warm glow from sunlight filtered through coloured glass windows.
The windows in the nave, unlike the usual stained-glass style, are made of translucent alabaster that gives the body of the building a golden glow.
The row of buildings was built as the Johnston’s Furniture Store, Gertrude St, including the taller building on the left still sporting the Johnston sign.
This was the Johnston’s furniture empire, an extremely profitable business that began around 1880.
The business was founded by Irish-born Charles Johnston. His son George joined the firm after he left school and established himself as an active member of the Fitzroy business world.
The business continued to operate as Johnston’s (although George died in 1949) but by the 1960s there were a number of tenants including an art supplier and several clothing manufacturers.
22 June 1963 the tall building (4 stories) caught fire and the top two floors were destroyed.
Today a rusting sign hanging high above the building still proclaims ‘Johnston’s’.
First of two shots of Melbourne mix of Victorian architecture and contemporary buildings.
The old brick building is at the corner of Spencer & Lonsdale Street in the CBD was part of the Former Melbourne City Council Power Station.
This building is the 1920 built CitiPower substation at 651-669 Lonsdale Street (Substation J).
Just north of Cheltenham Station. The older Brown steel 1920's structures are slowly being pulled down and replaced with newer Grey stanchions.
Cheltenham, VIC, AUSTRALIA
Flinders Street Station is Australia’s oldest train station, and with its distinctive facade and green copper dome it’s a city icon. Takeaway stands line the concourse, and the upper floors were purpose-built to house a library, gym and a lecture hall, later used as a ballroom.
Flinders Street is the busiest suburban railway station in the southern hemisphere, with over 1500 trains and 110,000 commuters passing through each day. Listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, its 708-metre main platform is the fourth longest railway platform in the world.

St Augustine’s Church a bluestone Gothic building at 631 Bourke Street was designed by T.A. Kelly and built by Reid & Stewart in 1869/70.
This structure replaced a timber church built in 1853.
The tower was extended in 1936 and sacristy added in 1965.
The church hall, designed by J.B. Denny in 1880/01. housed St Augustine’s School, established in 1853.
The church has long been associated with many national groups especially through its centre for seamen.
The foundation stone for the present church building was laid on 5/12/1869 by Bishop Goold.
It is the second oldest Catholic Church in the city of Melbourne.
This building at 158-164 Gertrude Street in Fitzroy was constructed in 1887 – 1888 for Cuthbert R. Blackett, a chemist, to the design of architects, Tappin, Gilbert and Dennehy.
The building is of considerable architectural importance as it provides an excellent example of an English Queen Anne Revival Commercial building.
The triple windows, the three centred arches of the first floor loggia and the use of the aprons under the windows are derivatives from Richard Norman Shaws work in England (in particular, Bedford Park, Bath Road of 1881).
There appears to be quite a novel use of a semi-circular loop at the bottom of the pilaster panels. The radiating gable end motif is also typical of Queen Anne work.
Blackett was a chemist of some importance, as described in Victoria and its Metropolis of 1888:
In 1879 he was elected to represent Fitzroy in the Legislative Assembly and took part in the memorable political struggles of that period… In 1880 he was appointed a member of the Royal Commission for the great Exhibition, was chairman of two important juries, and was soon afterwards appointed a member of the Royal Technological Commission of which body he is now president.
In 1882 he was again returned to Parliament as member for Fitzroy, but at the next general election, he was defeated.
Melbourne has an extensive tram network.
Tram Line #35 (a W-class carriage) circles the inner city and its a free ride.
All trams are free (not only City Circle Tram) in Melbourne's Free Tram Zone which operates in Melbourne's CBD.
Line #35 has 24 stops and it takes approximately 60 minutes to complete a loop.
The W-class tram is a cultural icon to Melbourne and the remaining ones are classified by the National Trust of Australia.
The W-class trams are a family of electric trams built by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB) between 1923 and 1956.
Over 33 years of production, 752 vehicles spanning 12 sub-classes were constructed, the majority at the MMTB's Preston Workshops.
W-class trams were introduced to Melbourne in 1923 as a new standard design.
The trams had a dual bogie layout and were characterized by a substantial timber frame supplanted by a steel under-frame, a simple rugged design.
The W class was the mainstay of Melbourne's tramways system for 60 years.
The Carlton Gardens is a World Heritage Site located on the northeastern edge of the Central Business District in the suburb of Carlton, in Melbourne, Australia.
The 26-hectare (64-acre) site contains the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Museum and Imax Cinema, tennis courts and an award-winning children's playground. The rectangular site is bound by Victoria Street, Rathdowne Street, Carlton Street, and Nicholson Street. From the Exhibition building the gardens gently slope down to the southwest and northeast. According to the World Heritage listing the Royal Exhibition Buildings and Carlton Gardens are "of historical, architectural, aesthetic, social and scientific (botanical) significance to the State of Victoria."

Another of the fine Fitzroy historic buildings - The Champion at 50-54 Gertrude Street.
This building was constructed in 1911 for the Victorian Insurance Company” (the builder and architect are unknown).
The hotel replaced an earlier hotel constructed in 1873 which probably did not confirm to the strict standards of the Licensing Reduction Board and was demolished.
The building is of a flamboyant composition, employing red brick and cement render to achieve a decorative yet quite clumsy design of many mixed elements.
At the corner is a dominating open-work pavilion tower an unusual and rare building element of the day.
The use of the three centred arch is characteristic of the period, and there are many other Queen Anne motifs: art nouveau/Arabic foliated capitals, elevated pediment with lush plasterwork and intact lead lighting in the corner tower window.
The Champion Hotel has been so drastically and insensitively Modified it is considered for addition to the Historic Buildings Register.
It is of significance as a large scale and ornate Edwardian building.
Its scale, design (incorporating adjoining shops) and corner location make it an important streetscape element.

The Royal Melbourne Hotel is sited in the 1889 built former Melbourne’s Bourke Street-West Police Station.
RMH incorporates historical features & modern architecture culminating into a Melbourne iconic entertainment & dining venue.
Built under the direction of the Public Works Department to a design of S.E. Bindley and S.C. Brittingham, the former Bourke Street West Police Station and adjacent Gothic Revival-style buildings at 621-629 Bourke Street are an important relic of 19th-century police administration in the western half of the city.
The complex comprised a cell block, watch-house, police barracks and station.
The sergeant's quarters and marshalling yard were constructed during 1887-89 and the cell block, although commenced in 1852, was not completed until 1887.
The complex, closed in 1976, is the last remnant of the 19th-century public buildings in the original government reserve bounded by Bourke, King, Collins and Spencer Streets.
The building encompassing 37, 39 & 43 Gertrude Street are emblematic of the Fitzroy neighbourhood stock of mid 1800 construction.
The different range of restoration and colour treatment caught my eye.
Gertrude Street runs from Nicholson Street in the west, across Brunswick Street, to Smith Street in the east.
The street was voted the second coolest street in the world according to TimeOut in 2022.
Fitzroy Gertrude Street began in optimism in the 1850s and developed into a respected residential and commercial precinct, fell on bad times in the 1890s depression and became synonymous with crime, poverty, gangs, prostitutes and seediness in the years following the First World War.
Fitzroy boasting the coolest street in the world, Fitzroy is Melbourne's oldest suburb.
3km north-east of the Central Business District in the City of Yarra, it covers 100ha and is the smallest and most densely populated area outside the CBD.

R707 heads up the ladder track towards the gate to the mainline, hauling a six car train bound for Southern Cross.
This was a rather short trip, picking up Cruise Express passengers for day four of their huge five day train getaway. Passengers were brought to Newport for a private tour of the 1880's erected Newport Workshops, with volunteers of both Steamrail and 707 Operations displaying their rollingstock and historic infrastructure.
After the passengers had completed their tours, R707 headed back to Southern Cross where the passengers then headed back to Albury with SRHC's standard gauge train.

One of three fountains in Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Carlton Gardens - The French Fountain.
The fountain is set in Carlton Gardens at the Nicholson St entrance to the Royal Exhibition Building.
The bronze fountain features three youths, each supporting a dolphin, above which rests a cupped scallop shell.
During Melbourne’s International Exhibition of 1880, the French Fountain formed the centrepiece of the exhibition’s fernery.
The fountain forms the centrepiece of a round garden bed and its waters flow into the large, concrete pool.
Carlton Gardens and The Royal Exhibition Building are a 2004 inscribed UNESCO World Cultural Centre.

The grand Royal Exhibition Building is the world's only surviving Great Hall, constructed as an exhibition space and still used for that purpose.
Completed in 1880 for Melbourne's first International Exhibition, the Royal Exhibition Building was the site of Australia's first Federal Parliament in 1901. In 2004 it became Australia’s first building to be given World Heritage listing.
With its meticulously restored interior, expansive galleries, soaring dome and decorative paintwork, the Great Hall is a magnificent setting for trade shows, fairs and cultural events. Tours run regularly, departing from the nearby Melbourne Museum; call 13 11 02 for details.
The design for the Royal Exhibition Building’s dome was influenced by Brunelleschi’s cathedral dome in Florence. The dome was first illuminated for the 1901 parliament and is still a spectacular sight when occasionally lit at night, appearing to hover over Melbourne's rooftops and visible for miles.
