Think City Vancouver Freeway Revolts – Bicycle Tour

Sunday, May 08, 2011

Tour participants in front of house slated for demolition to make way for freeway expansion at Grandview / Hwy 1

Starting along the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts we toured significant sites in Vancouver’s successful freeway revolt of the 60s and early 70s. As we head east we moved from the walking city in Strathcona / Chinatown to streetcar suburbs and discussed how public transit has shaped our city.

The tour ended at the site of the present day Highway 1 freeway widening, one of the key locations in the present day freeway revolt against the Gateway freeway megaproject.

Tour Host: Eric Doherty

Eric Doherty is a transportation and environmental planner. In his consulting business, Ecopath Planning, Eric focuses on practical approaches for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts, while improving community resiliency and livability. He is active with StopThePave.org and is also on the steering committee of the Vancouver / Burnaby Chapter of the Council of Canadians.

Some of these were "naturally-occurring," and some where helped along. Not all of them are good examples of the ASL alphabet, but I don't think most comic characters are well-versed in ASL. And what it all comes down to is Exhibit A: Too Much Free Time.

Perhaps the nation's most notorious urban renewal, mega development money pit, the Renaissance Center (Ren Cen) dominates the Detroit skyline and landscape. The complex is spatially arranged as if a spaceship literally landed on the city's waterfront. Seen here in 2000, the Ren Cen was for decades surrounded by enormous concrete ramparts. The only way in was by car or the so-called "People-Mover. Pedestrians, not wanted! As if to add insult to injury; the super-block footprint of the development severs the downtown from it was waterfront.

The smoked glass and box/tube-like design of the primary structures are proportioned and arranged in manner that is visually awkward (and appalling) from every perspective.

Is the redevelopment of central Bucharest the worst city planning disaster west of Pyonyang? And just don't get me started on Bulevardul Unirii!

-- From Wikipedia --

Bucharest suffered significant damage due to Allied bombing during World War II and the devastating earthquake of March 4, 1977. However, neither of these events changed the face of the city more than the Ceausescan "redevelopment schemes" of the 1980s, under which an overall area of eight square kilometers of the historic center of Bucharest were leveled, including monasteries, churches, synagogues, a hospital, and a noted Art Deco sports stadium. This also involved evicting 40,000 people after a single day's notice and relocating them to new homes, in order to make way for the grandiose Centrul Civic and the House of the Republic, now officially renamed as the Palace of Parliament.

The Palace of Parliament

Built on the site of a hill variously known as Spirii Hill, Uranus Hill, or Arsenal Hill, which was largely razed for this megaproject in 1980,[7] the building anchors the west end of Bulevardul Unirii and Centrul Civic. Constructing the Palace and Centrul Civic required demolishing much of Bucharest's historic district, including 19 Orthodox Christian churches, six Jewish synagogues, three Protestant churches (plus eight relocated churches), and 30,000 residences.[8]

On Sunday, Nov.3, 2024, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced the completion of two new elevators providing access to the street level and uptown level at the 14 St 123 subway station, marking another milestone in the 14 St Station Complex megaproject.
