Nestled in the serene city of Kanazawa, Japan, the D.T. Suzuki Museum is a masterpiece of minimalist architecture designed by the renowned Yoshio Taniguchi. Dedicated to the life and teachings of Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki, a pivotal figure in spreading Zen philosophy to the West, the museum is a tranquil retreat that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

The Contemplation Space, featured in this image, exemplifies the museum’s integration of architecture, water, and nature. The striking modernist white walls rise gracefully against the backdrop of vibrant greenery, while the shallow reflecting pool creates a mirrored surface that captures the ever-changing sky and landscape. This dynamic interplay between built and natural elements embodies the Zen ideals of balance and impermanence.

Visitors are drawn to the calm energy of the water garden, which leads them along a deliberate architectural path toward introspection and mindfulness. The space invites slow, meditative movement, with subtle design choices such as floating walkways and open apertures that encourage reflection—both literal and figurative. The minimalist design reduces distractions, allowing visitors to focus on the beauty of simplicity and the profound stillness the space offers.

This museum is more than a tribute to D.T. Suzuki; it is an immersive experience of his teachings. Whether you’re a design enthusiast or a seeker of quiet moments, the museum’s seamless harmony of structure and nature makes it a must-visit destination. Its thoughtful architecture speaks volumes without saying a word.

On the left bank of Wakha River is the small picturesque village situated at an altitude of 3, 237 m / 10, 620 ft. and is dominated by the monastery commonly known as Shergol Gompa.

Shar-'ago.lka or Shargola or Shergole better known as Shergol in present times, means 'Lord of the first rising' and refer to the morning star. An ancient hero, called Agu Drumba who is supposed to have built the Shergol monastery is probably a personification of the morning star.

Here one cannot help but wonder if there is indeed any connection between Drumba with Dhruva as the Polar Star is called in Sanskrit; Agu is (also) used to indicate heroes of Kesar Saga.

Incidentally, the mythology of King Kesar of Central Asia is a subject to mass literature found in Tibet, Mongolia and China, it is known as Kesar Saga.

Gonpa Jangchub Ling as the actual name is (of Shergol monastery), means 'place of enlightenment', is carved out of vertically rising ochre honeycombed hill, forming with some other cliffs of same description a giant flight of stairs on the slope of a bleak mountain of loose stones. The gompa itself is painted white, with bands of bright red color, so that it stands out distinctly against the darker rocks. There is barely a sign of vegetation near; all round is a dreary waste of stones alone.

The convent of Shergol is a genuine cave monastery and is probably very, very old. Its former name was apparently Ma-khang or 'Mother House'. It may refer to Śrī Dēvī or Palden Lhamo or her pre-Buddhist equivalent to whom the monastery was evidently dedicated.

Śrī Dēvī or Palden Lhamo is a female deity sometimes linked to the Hindu goddess Kali. She is the protectress of the Gelug-pa sect. A backdrop of peacock feathers sits behind her and she holds a corpse in her mouth.

Belonging to the Gelug pa order, the Buddhist hermitage houses some frescoes, a small shrine with eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara image and three images of Tara, carved in wood by Tibetan artists in olden days. The location of the monastery is far more impressive than the art inside which is unfortunately faded and dusty.

Avalokitshvara is a popular and famous bodhisattva (enlightened). He has renounced Nirvana, the end of the cycle of rebirth. He embodies compassion and remains on earth to counter distress and suffering. He is believed by many to be the creator of the universe. Avalokishvara in one aspect is quite commonly seen in visual form with eleven heads and eyes on his hands.

Tara or Drolma or Dolma is the female form of bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism. There are twenty one different aspects of Tara.

In times gone by this secluded place was indeed more often used as a retreat for the meditating monks rather than as a usual place of worship.

The view of the mountains on the other side of the broad valley is in itself particularly fantastic. The mountains which face the monastery are of considerable height, and their slopes, though possibly formed of rugged debris, from this distance appear perfectly smooth, falling to the bed of the river in regular furrows and in waves overlapping each other, like those one often sees on a stream of lava that has cooled.

Spring on Maui Retreat May, 2016

As you focus your mind on your third eye, then your full attention is only on your third eye. After some time you can feel you are looking for different colors, just like red, blue, green, white, orange & pink etc. Few peoples see different flowers and some feel their body is getting warm up, and some feel cold. Few people feel the vibration in their chakras of the body. Everyone has a different kind of feelings. If you feel enjoy during the meditation than your mind will be controlled. And then you can't feel the pain in your body and you will be able to sit for a long time in one position during the meditation. But if your mind doesn't control than you feel a little bit of pain or tiredness in your body.

Precautions / to be avoided: Cigarettes, coffee, pickle, chicken, fish, eggs, more spicy or oily food. If you follow the above, your five elements control and your seven chakras will work properly in your body. And any kind of mental and physical problem will be cured. Especially any kind of mental problem meditation is very good.

We teach the regular practice of a balanced series of techniques, the energy of the body and mind can be liberated and the quality of consciousness can be expanded. This is not a subjective claim but is now being investigated by the scientists and being shown by an empirical fact. Contact- www.omashram.in www.omyogaashram.in

Meditation can help us to understand our own mind. We can learn how to transform our mind from negative to positive, from disturbed to peaceful, from unhappy to happy.

Practicing yoga for inner peace

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the constant noise and distractions around us. We're bombarded with information, notifications, and responsibilities, and it can be difficult to find a moment of calm and clarity amidst the chaos.

That's where meditation comes in. Meditation is a practice that has been used for centuries to quiet the mind, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. But what exactly is meditation, and how can you get started with this powerful practice?

At its core, meditation involves training your mind to focus on a specific object, thought, or activity, with the goal of achieving a state of mental clarity and inner peace. This can be accomplished through a variety of techniques, including deep breathing, visualization, and mindfulness.

Benefits of meditation

The benefits of meditation are numerous and well-documented. Research has shown that regular meditation practice can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and concentration, lower blood pressure, and even boost the immune system.

Some tips to get you started include finding a quiet, comfortable space to meditate, setting a regular meditation schedule, and starting with just a few minutes of meditation per day, gradually increasing the length of your sessions over time.

So, how can you get started with meditation? Our Beginner's Guide to Meditation is the perfect place to start.
