The Plague Doctor's Mask.
This beaked variant of the "Volto," or half face mask, represents a very real and tragic part of the history of Venice.
In its history, Venice has endured several rounds of the plague. In times when medical practice was based more on hopeful speculation than on anything related to medicine as we know it today, the plague doctors attired themselves according the beliefs of the day.
One of these beliefs was that the plague was spread by birds. By wearing a mask with a beak it was believed that the plague itself might somehow be drawn out of its victim and on to the attire of the doctor.
The beak itself was actually a primitive form of gas mask into which strong herbs and aromatics were placed to protect the doctor from the effects of the plague.
Today, the costumes worn at Carnevale are complete to varying degrees. The full dress of a plague doctor included a long black cape and either a Tricorne (three cornered hat) or a wide brimmed hat worn tightly on the head at the top margin of the mask. Leather breeches and a cane were also commonly part of the full regalia of medieval medicine men.

Multirão de cirurgias realizadas pela ong expedionários da saúde em terra indígena na comunidade de Yauretê, município de São Gabriel da Cachoeira-AM, com apoio da Secretaria Especial de Saúde Indígena-SESAI e, parceria com o do Ministério da Defesa por meio do Exército e Aeronaútica. Evento realizado no período de 24.03 a 01.04 de 2017.
