Now that's what I call organization.
Except the most anal of people would have made sure the tabs were perfectly in a diagonal line, and I apologize. I had to do that for the file box I made for my new job, and I wanted to rebel.
Anyway, if things do pan out with the lawyer, at least I will be the most organized client they've ever seen. :)

This photo shows a stack of 118 Medicare statements which arrived in the mail a few days ago.
My elderly mom has been having some nasty health challenges in the past few months which have resulted in three hospitalizations, each followed by stays of one to two weeks in skilled nursing facilities (SNF). I have only opened four of the 118 Medicare statements so far. I suspect we will soon be receiving the corresponding statements from her co-insurance provider, and it will be interesting to see if they aggregate the statements to some extent, or if we will be getting 118 of those also. The metered postage for these statements came to more than $40.
The statements from the hospital and SNF for the first two of my mom’s three hospitalizations have amounted to more than $200,000. The total price tag for her medical care for 2009 will probably approach $300,000. It’s a bit scary, but it will be interesting to see how much she will be paying out-of-pocket for all this. There will definitely be at least one hospital deductible of more than $1000, maybe three. The rest is a total question mark at this point.
The fees on the hospital/SNF statements are astounding. Some of the line items are clearly inflated. For a two week SNF stay, the pharmacy charges alone were more than $1300. This was mostly for similar medications for which my mom usually pays less than $100/month.
Thank goodness for Medicare and co-insurance! Luckily my parents were good savers and my mom has some assets remaining to cover co-insurance premiums and to pay off the out-of-pocket fees that will result from her medical care. It’s sad to think about the plight of the elderly who don’t have co-insurance and have much heftier out-of-pocket expenses when they need care. There are probably many who are financially ruined by these types of medical problems, many others who simply don't pay for their care and feel terrible guilt. I'm sure there are many who simply don't get the treatment they need and die sooner than if they received care.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimates between 45 and 50 million of the U.S. population below age 65 are uninsured. Hopefully Congress will make some significant progress toward alleviating this awful situation in the coming weeks and months.
