I had to harvest all our carrots about 3 weeks ago after the deer and bears began digging them up. When this shot was taken I was cutting them into medallions to parboil and freeze. I like the physiology of the carrot in this cross section.

Hellebores aka Christmas rose or Lenten rose are perennials that bloom in this area during late Winter and early Spring.

The variety is called 'Vancouver Medallion'. This variety was developed to commemorate the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. The green tubes look to me like Shrek's ears.

This plant was actually starting to bloom this year while the Sochi Winter Olympics were on, but I waited while they fully developed and for some nice sunny weather to take their picture.

During the 16th century, this area was the site of one of the largest native taíno uprisings against the Spaniards. The chief Mabodomaca was one of the leaders of the revolt. Isabelinos honor this cacique with a carved bust known by locals as La Cara del Indio. Leyend says that as Mabodomaca threw himself into the waves to escape capture, his guanín (gold medallion) fell off and is still waiting to be found in the depths of the ocean.
