We had a shooting assignment in my camera club to do a photo series, with some limits. The required limit was using the same focal length in all images. The other one I chose was "in camera double exposure."

I have gone through a lot of emotional ups and downs in the past several weeks, and decided to do self portraits to convey my feelings, emotions and vulnerabilities.

So there are six in the series. I used my Lensbaby Velvet 56, and with each double exposure, I also moved while the shutter was open to create more of an abstract effect. I will be posting them, interspersed with my other posts.

eyes on the wings of a peacock butterfly (Aglais io / Tagpfauenauge) for the theme #Eye in #MacroMondays 😉 HMM!

Like many other butterflies that hibernate, the peacock butterfly exhibits many anti-predator defence mechanisms against would-be predators. The peacock butterfly's most obvious defense comes from the four large eyespots that it has on its wings. It also uses camouflage and can emit a hissing sound. The eyespots are brilliantly coloured concentric circles. Avian predators of the butterfly include blue tits, pied flycatchers and other small passerine birds. The first line of defence against these predators for many hibernating butterflies is crypsis, a process in which the butterflies blend into their environment by mimicking a leaf and staying immobile. Some hibernating butterflies such as the peacock have a second line of defence: when attacked, they open their wings, expose their eyespots and perform an intimidating display of threat. The drawing makes predators believe that the animal is proportionally larger than the eyes. The intimidating visual display shown by the peacock butterfly gives it a much better chance at escaping predators than butterflies that rely solely on leaf mimicry. (Wikipedia)

Our lives are full of decisions that lead us down such paths. Paths where it is impossible to predict where they will lead us.

Of course, we usually have a wish as to where we would like to end up. And we usually have a fear in our luggage. The fear that the path will lead us to a place we cannot handle.

Both are completely normal. Because where knowledge is lacking, imagination sets in. It's always been that way. And so it's completely okay if we're afraid of the unknown. This fear is a protective mechanism that increases our awareness and ensures that we pay attention to where we place our feet. Something that makes us slow down but minimizes the risk of accidents.

So when you find yourself on the path into the unknown, not only accept your wishes and visions, but also your fears.

In the end we always get somewhere. And in my experience, it's rarely the place we want and never the place we're most afraid of. So take the first step and let yourself be surprised.

Osmeteria, or stink horns, are an active defense mechanism of the swallowtail family. In the case of the Anise Swallowtails, in my yard, they didn't extend the horns when in contact with another caterpillar or if i touched them on the head. The only time they extended the osmeteria was when they brushed against a new section of fennel. This made it a bit tough to get the horns in focus, because the fennel was usually covering the head.

The texture of the osmeteria can be seen in light box.

An impressive Scherzer bascule bridge in Rotherhithe, near the Old Salt Quay public house.

Bascule is the French word for a seesaw or balance. The best known British bascule bridge is Tower Bridge, a rather more massive undertaking than the Rotherhithe one, with two leaves, but following the same principles. Scherzer bascule bridges are lift bridges that roll or rock back on a curved base to rise so that ships can pass beneath, and are often compared to Medieval draw-bridges. They may have one leaf, like this one, or two leaves, which open either side of a span and meet in the middle (like Tower Bridge). Scherzer bridges are found all over the world because they have simple mechanisms, open rapidly and have low energy requirements. The bridges consist of two important components - the length spanning the gap, in the Rotherhithe cases spanning two sections of road, and a counterweight filled with water. It sits on tracks, and electric motors wind the bridge over the tracks with the assistance of cogs and racks that fix it into place at 90 degrees to prevent slippage. They must have been quite something to see when they were working.

Sadly, my Mum and Step Farther both suffered with Dementia before they passed away. It's a truly awful disease.

Dementia is a syndrome, or a collection of symptoms, characterized by a decline in cognitive functions like thinking, remembering, and reasoning. It's not a single disease, but rather an umbrella term for various conditions that impact the brain and lead to these cognitive impairments. Dementia is progressive, meaning symptoms worsen over time, and it can affect various aspects of a person's life, including their ability to perform daily tasks, communicate, and manage emotions
