Falls of Aucharn at Aucharn, Perth & Kinross, Scotland. Acharn (Scottish Gaelic: Àth a' Chàirn meaning 'Field of the Cairn[s]') is a hamlet in the Kenmore parish of the Scottish council area of Perth and Kinross. It is situated on the south shore of Loch Tay close to its eastern end. The hamlet was built in the early 19th century to house workers from the surrounding estates. A watermill was constructed to harness the power of the nearby Acharn Burn, and this was converted into a craft centre in the 1970s, and later into a private residence. There is a bridge in the middle that goes over the Acharn burn. The Falls of Acharn, a series of waterfalls with a total height of 24.5 metres (80 ft) set in a steep wooded gorge, are a popular tourist attraction on the nearby Acharn Burn south of the hamlet. The steep Acharn Falls Walk is about 1 mile straight up and down from the village, and is a dangerous place to walk dogs without leads, but provides scenic views of the falls above the village. The upper falls have a timber walkway constructed by the 202 Field Squadron RE (V) in June 1989. There is also Hermits Cave, possibly constructed by the Victorians as a kind of folly. William Wordsworth is known to have visited the falls in 1803 with his sister Dorothy, who noted in her diary the "very beautiful prospect" available of Loch Tay from the falls. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acharn,_Perth_and_Kinross

SN/NC: Tabebuia Rosea Syn. Heptaphylla, Bignoniaceae Family

Tabebuia rosea, also called pink poui, and rosy trumpet tree is a neotropical tree that grows up to 30 m (98 ft) and can reach a diameter at breast height of up to 100 cm (3 ft). The Spanish name roble de sabana, meaning "savannah oak", is widely used in Costa Rica, probably because it often remains in heavily deforested areas and because of the resemblance of its wood to that of oak trees. It is the national tree of El Salvador, where it is called "Maquilíshuat"and by the scientific name tabebuia heptaphylla. Very commonly used as landscaping in many cities, especially in Brazil where it is quite abundant. The tree is known as "tekoma" in Malaysia, "රොබරෝසියා (Robarōsiyā)" in Sri Lanka "ชมพูพันธุ์ทิพย์" in Thailand. It has an excellent and heavy wood and very common in the floors because of it’s sturdiness.

Shah-i-Zinda (Uzbek: Shohizinda; Persian: شاه زنده‎, meaning "The Living King") is a necropolis in the north-eastern part of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The Shah-i-Zinda Ensemble includes mausoleums and other ritual buildings of 9-14th and 19th centuries. The name Shah-i-Zinda (meaning "The living king") is connected with the legend that Kusam ibn Abbas, the cousin of the prophet Muhammad was buried there. As if he came to Samarkand with the Arab invasion in the 7th century to preach Islam. Popular legends speak that he was beheaded for his faith. But he took his head and went into the deep well (Garden of Paradise), where he's still living now.

The Shah-i-Zinda complex was formed over eight (from 11th till 19th) centuries and now includes more than twenty buildings.

The ensemble comprises three groups of structures: lower, middle and upper connected by four-arched domed passages locally called chartak. The earliest buildings date back to the 11-12th centuries. Mainly their bases and headstones have remained now. The most part dates back to the 14-15th centuries. Reconstructions of the 16-19th centuries were of no significance and did not change the general composition and appearance.

The initial main body - Kusam-ibn-Abbas complex - is situated in the northeastern part of the ensemble. It consists of several buildings. The most ancient of them, the Kusam-ibn-Abbas mausoleum and mosque (16th century), are among them.

The upper group of buildings consists of three mausoleums facing each other. The earliest one is Khodja-Akhmad Mausoleum (1340s), which completes the passage from the north. The Mausoleum of 1361, on the right, restricts the same passage from the east.

The middle group consists of the mausoleums of the last quarter of the 14th century - first half of the 15th century and is concerned with the names of Timur's relatives, military and clergy aristocracy. On the western side the Mausoleum of Shadi Mulk Aga, the niece of Timur, stands out. This portal-domed one-premise crypt was built in 1372. Opposite is the Mausoleum of Shirin Bika Aga, Timur's sister.

Next to Shirin-Bika-Aga Mausoleum is the so-called Octahedron, an unusual crypt of the first half of the 15th century.

Near the multi-step staircase the most well proportioned buildings of the lower group is situated. It is a double-cupola mausoleum of the beginning of the 15th century. This mausoleum is devoted to Kazi Zade Rumi, who was the scientist and astronomer. Therefore the double-cupola mausoleum which was built by Ulugbek above his tomb in 1434-1435th has the height comparable with cupolas of the royal family's mausoleums.

The main entrance gate to the ensemble (Darvazakhana or the first chartak) turned southward was built in 1434-1435 under Ulugbek.

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, meaning valley of the rocks) is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona–Utah border (around 36°59′N 110°6′WCoordinates: 36°59′N 110°6′W), near the Four Corners area. The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163.

Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films, and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, "its five square miles [13 square kilometers] have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West."[

The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. The elevation of the valley floor ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 feet (1,500 to 1,800 m) above sea level. The floor is largely siltstone of the Cutler Group, or sand derived from it, deposited by the meandering rivers that carved the valley. The valley's vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide.

The buttes are clearly stratified, with three principal layers. The lowest layer is the Organ Rock Shale, the middle is de Chelly Sandstone, and the top layer is the Moenkopi Formation capped by Shinarump Conglomerate. The valley includes large stone structures including the famed "Eye of the Sun".

Between 1945 and 1967, the southern extent of the Monument Upwarp was mined for uranium, which occurs in scattered areas of the Shinarump Conglomerate; vanadium and copper are associated with uranium in some deposits.[2]

Monument Valley is officially a large area that includes much of the area surrounding Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, a Navajo Nation equivalent to a national park. Oljato, for example, is also within the area designated as Monument Valley.

Visitors may pay an access fee and drive through the park on a 17-mile (27 km) dirt road (a 2-3 hour trip). Parts of Monument Valley, such as Mystery Valley and Hunts Mesa, are accessible only by guided tour.

The painted bunting is one of the most rapidly declining songbirds in the eastern United States. Florida breeding and winter season surveys show an astounding 4-6 percent annual decrease in this species' numbers. In some areas, counts have fallen from the hundreds to a mere handful.

The buntings seek brushy vegetation in open areas such as roadside thickets and edges of fields. They frequent backyard gardens, searching for seeds. They nest in the early successional shrub edges in coastal hammocks.

Breeding takes place in Atlantic coastal counties from northern Brevard County to the Georgia border. Painted buntings lay about four eggs in deep-cup nests of grass and sticks constructed at the end of branches, usually in Spanish moss.

Behavior:

The reason for their decline is a puzzle, although one suspect is the brown-headed cowbird, which lays its eggs in the nests of other songbirds rather than building its own. In the competition of nestlings for food, the faster-growing cowbirds win, often starving the young buntings and even ousting them from the nest. Another suspected reason for their decline is the illegal capture of hundreds of adults for the exotic pet trade, especially in the Caribbean.

Several of the Western meanings of the origin of the Anemone pertain to the Greek Mythology, featuring Adonis and Aphrodite.

The goddess Aphrodite kept the mortal man Adonis as a lover; when Adonis was gored by a wild boar, Aphrodite's tears at his death mixed with his blood and gave rise to the Anemone flower.

The beautiful Anemone flower symbolises:

Protection against evil and ill wishes.

The approach of a rain storm when the petals close up.

Forsaken or forgotten love and affection.

Anemones are a great cut flower and will give you around nine days of vase life.

Red pigment made from ochre was one of the first colours used in prehistoric art.

The Ancient Egyptians and Mayans coloured their faces red in ceremonies; Roman generals had their bodies coloured red to celebrate victories.

It was also an important colour in China, where it was used to colour early pottery and later the gates and walls of palaces.

In the Renaissance, the brilliant red costumes for the nobility and wealthy were dyed with kermes and cochineal.

The 19th century brought the introduction of the first synthetic red dyes, which quickly replaced the traditional dyes.

"The term sexual preference has a similar meaning to sexual orientation, but is more commonly used outside of scientific circles by people who believe that sexual orientation is, in whole or part, a matter of choice." (wiki on sexual orientation)

I am so fucking sick and tired of people acting like my sexual orientation was some "choice" I made. It isn't. It is the way I am. If you don't like it, you can rightly fuck off.

However, if you label my orientation as preference, I have the right to call you an ignorant fuck; because you either don't know what you mean, or you are just too stupid to realize that being gay is NOT A CHOICE.

The meaning of being together is to being one- getting lost into an one -the colourful one.

Been meaning to come up with a design for the Duchess' engine. Based on jet engines and early 20th century engines.

I was surprised to learn that the concept of jet engines has existed for a lot longer than before they were introduced for standard aviation and transportation. though most concepts were mainly hypothetical until around 1916.

the engine design is intricate and complex. A contrast to the sleek and simple body of the Duchess. If you look closely you can see the air scoops and exhaust ports that are prominent on the completed Duchess design.

Black redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros)

Meaning behind the name:

Phoenicurus = Greek meaning "(Crimson/red/purple), taled" that is, "Red tailed"

ochruros = Greek meaning "Pale yellow, tailed"

Personally, I cannot understand why the second scientific name "ochruros" was given, due to the fact it has already been correctly described as "Red-tailed." Though it could be down to the fact that the tail is a little less "striking" and appears slightly duller?

The English name was given by Gould in 1834 and stuck ever since, likely because the mature adult males have black-like plumage as well as a red tail. These birds were originally an occasional visitor before that time and therefore lacks any local folk names.

The term "Redstart" is more interesting, as Common Redstarts were known as a breeding species long before Black redstarts were known. The correct term (as in the scientific name) is "Red-tailed" and the term "start" is middle English "stert" and of Germanic in origin and simply means "tail". The term "start" is older than the word "tail" ( first appearing as tayl) and apparently the Germanic form stuck with certain bird names. Redstart first appeared in 1570 as "Redstarte".

I really have been meaning to make more time for Flickr in my crazy day-to-day. February/March were the wrong months to make that decision - between job interviews, work, conferences, and travel, I'm completely run down, fighting a nasty cold/case of laryngitis, and on my way out of town once again - this time to SXSW in Austin, Texas.

I spent last weekend in Beantown attending a conference at Harvard. Despite my nasty sickness, I did manage to have some fun at the event and spending some very *downtime* with my friend and host, Justin. I even took some pictures! Hopefully I'll be posting those in the next couple of days, maybe even in transit to Austin, and in the meantime know that it's killing me to be so distant from my photography and something I hope to rectify in the near future :o).

Princess is the feminine form of prince (from Latin princeps, meaning principal citizen). Most often, the term has been used for the consort of a prince, or her daughters.

For many centuries, the title "princess" was not regularly used for a monarch's daughter, who might simply be called "Lady" or a non-English equivalent; Old English had no female equivalent to "prince", "earl", or any royal or noble aside from the queen, and the women of nobility bore the title of "Lady"

Remember me? I’m not completely back yet. I was meaning to get this up about 3 weeks ago when I took it to inform you all about my month long break from the 365. I’ve been extremely busy with school work and have barely been able to even touch this since I took it. I decided I would rather take a month off than upload mediocre photos every day. If you followed me on Facebook you would have known though. *hint *hint. However, I will be done in one week and be back to being able to take photos every day. I have day 265 taken and still need to edit it, so once I get that done I’ll be on the last 100 days!

This is lost lake. I decided to take a photo here on the way back to the University after Easter break. 300ft cliffs. No biggie. I did some different things with this. After having seen a post on Brooke Shaden's Facebook about using her own cloud stock I decided to use my own. So the sky is from a different day. I also made the texture out of a conglomeration of random textures I had been making. Title inspired by the Horns of Consecration at Knossos (I'm secretly a huge fan of Greek art and civilization)

“Polarities” by Kenneth Siessor

Sometimes she is like sherry, like the sun through a vessel of glass,

Like light through an oriel window in a room of yellow wood;

Sometimes she is the colour of lions, of sand in the fire of noon,

Sometimes as bruised with shadows as the afternoon.

Sometimes she moves like rivers, sometimes like trees;

Or tranced and fixed like South Pole silences;

Sometimes she is beauty, sometimes fury, sometimes neither,

Sometimes nothing, drained of meaning, null as water.

Sometimes, when she makes me pea-soup or plays me Schumann,

I love her one way; sometimes I love her another

More disturbing way when she opens her mouth in the dark;

Sometimes I like her with camellias, sometimes with a parsley-stalk,

Sometimes I like her swimming in a mirror on the wall;

Sometimes I don’t like her at all.

Godrevy (Cornish: Godrevi, meaning small farms) (/ɡəˈdriːvi/ gə-dree-vee)[1] is an area on the eastern side of St Ives Bay, west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Facing the Atlantic Ocean it is popular with both the surfing community and walkers. It is part owned by the National Trust, and offshore on Godrevy Island is a lighthouse maintained by Trinity House which is said to be the inspiration for Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse.[2] Godrevy lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the South West Coast Path runs around the whole promontory. There are several public car parks on the western side where the National Trust owns and operates a cafe

It is considered that the origin meaning of Ouroboros symbol lies in the rotation of the planet Earth around its own axis and as a result, the rotation of the Sun and stars in sky. You may have encountered many times thу symbol depicting a serpent eating its own tail.The ouroboros often symbolizes self-reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return. It can also represent the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished. Also its counterpart is the swastika - both of these ancient symbols represent the movement of the cosmos.
