Junior just can’t get enough to eat on his own, so Mom and Pop Starling keep themselves occupied feeding the little one; who appears to be just as large as his parents : )

Starlings will eat nearly anything, but they focus on insects and other invertebrates when they’re available. Common prey include grasshoppers, beetles, flies, caterpillars, snails, earthworms, millipedes, and spiders.

They also eat fruits including wild and cultivated cherries, holly berries, hackberries, mulberries, tupelo, Virginia creeper, sumac, and blackberries; as well as grains, seeds, nectar, livestock feed, and garbage.

During a recent visit to the San Diego Zoo, I found this colorful fellow vocalizing complaints about another of his clan snatching away a bit of food. Brought a smile as I reminisced about similar mealtime altercations that occurred during my days at the Fire Station.

The Red-tailed Monkey:

Red-tailed monkeys are found in East and Central Africa. These monkeys live in tropical moist forests, swamp forest, riverine and gallery forest.

Red-tailed monkeys eat leaves, flowers, or insects in times where fruit is scarce. As they forage, these monkeys gather their findings in the expandable cheeks of their mouths. The pouches will hold a large amount of food where they can forage in one area and then carry their food away to another location where it is safe to consume without the threat of another stealing from them.

Red-tailed monkeys are social primates that form groups that can range in size from 7 to 30 individuals. The groups consist of one dominant male and females and their offspring. Groups generally stay together through all periods of the day and through life, except for males who reach maturity. These males will leave the group they were born into and go on to form all male groups with other red-tailed monkey males or survive alone until they can replace the dominant male of a different social group. Females in a group will help take care of their own young as well as the young of other females in the group.

This shot is to introduce you to the three latest additions to the Koll wetlands, at least of the avian variety. We've been watching the pied-billed grebe nest for a few weeks, and finally, two arrived. yesterday, they were joined by another sibling. Great to see both parents involved. One sat on the nest, while the other brought back this crayfish, then they tore off chunks and fed the youngsters.

After a long day of exploring the island and enjoying the sights, guests can get a moment of quiet reflection by slipping out during mealtime and settling in the Common House.

Sand dollars are species of extremely flattened, burrowing sea urchins. The mouth of the sand dollar is located on the bottom of its body at the center of the petal-like pattern.

The lakes and ponds here are frozen, now. And the ground is covered with 10" or so of packed, solid icy snow. So mealtimes have become more of a challenge for the larger birds of prey like owls. I think this is a Barred Owl (Strix varia) that was watching us walk the dogs along a reservoir up in the hills early this morning. Needless to say we kept little Ms. EmmyLou Who close by - lest she should become someone's breakfast... :)

Not the greatest quality shot as my gear doesn't do well in low lighting situations, but it is what it is...

It does match the new video I just published on YouTube, however. Barred Owl & Owlets Part II: Not Spaghetti! can be viewed at the following link if you desire: youtu.be/Y0fhPSGFeAI

Between Part I & Part II, the mother Barred Owl, Gracie, flew down to the dead Gray Squirrel and was quickly joined by one of her three owlets. She worked to tear open the carcass, after which time her owlet reached in and 'stole' some of the innards and flew a short distance away to eat them.

Like any young one, it had some difficulty in managing this long and nutrient rich morsel. Watch the struggle and success as this owlet manages on it's own.

Feel free to skip the video if nature in the raw unduly disturbs you.

Many thanks, Terry, for this wonderful opportunity to view and record this family at mealtime.

Please don't use this image on websites, blogs, etc. without my permission.

I probably could have gotten a less obstructed view from a different angle but I just happened to find him while looking for something else & I didn't want to disturb his mealtime munching on these new tender Spring leaves.

In search of the english translation for these birds called "Kohlmeise" in German, I decided not to use the english name for it. It yould build up false hopes :)

or the Curse of the Mealtime Unsolicited Phonecall

This is Sampson, who has a good home across the street, but who often visits around mealtime to see what might be on the menu for our outdoor kittycat.
