www.flickr.com/photos/nataliaalvarenga/ her flickr, she's a superb photographer n' a great-wonderful friend!
I went SCUBA diving in St. Thomas. I wanted to give the thumbs up but I was afraid that I was sending "up" signals. Fortunately my photographer knew that the thumbs also mean "awesome."
Hello my friends. Long time no see :) . Hope everybody is fine! kiss to everybody and hope u like my photo!
my hubby is a high school teacher, and yesterday he had the day off. alas, i did not. when i asked him what he'd do with his day, he said he thought he'd head up to borders to replace our copy of serenity (a dvd we'd lent out, but we forgot to whom, and we really want to see it again, so whomever we lent it to can keep it, cos life's too short not to do stupid shit like that in my opinion, and could i possibly use any more tenses in this sentence?). ANYway, we had some extra coupons, and he said, "what should i do with these?" "i don't know, surprise me." and then i promptly forgot the entire conversation.
a long day ensued. meetings, tense ones -- meeting the boss's new boss, etc., then dinner with the boss and the boss's new boss (who was fabulous, in the end). at the restaurant, florian called. i told him i'd be home later than i'd thought. "well, look in your bag when you get home." (that is, my normal everyday bag, not the smaller bag i use when i have to do the business casual thing and go to the corporate office for meetings. girls will understand this.) ANYway, i figured it was something that had come in the mail that i needed to see.
this book -- this gloriously fabulous book -- was what was in my bag.
p.s. if'n yer interested, go here, plug "walker evans signs" into the little amazon.com widget, and go to town. not only will you get the book, but you'll also support my favorite non-profit radio station. wheeeee!

Have you tried this stuff yet? Michelob Ultra fruit flavored pilsner.
I've mentioned probably no less than a dozen times on my photostream that I'm a beer snob. I like *quality* beer and the darker, the better. I'm sorry to those I offend, but Anheuser-Busch isn't exactly my idea of quality beer.
We swung in the grocery store tonight to pick up a couple of things and Rj mentioned that he tried these at a friend's house the other day and enjoyed them. I was quite perplexed as to how something that looked line a wine cooler could actually be good, but at $5.49 for a six pack, I figured I'd give it a whirl.
I went with the Tuscan Orange Grapefruit flavor and wasn't anticipating much from it. But boy was I pleasantly surprised! It's fruity, but still has the taste of beer! And I don't know what the 'Ultra' means, but I'm thinking it means 'won't fatten you up as quickly as that dark stuff you drink'.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not converting over to these things. In fact, I had to have a Black and Tan with my dinner after downing one of these during dinner prep. But they definitely make for a nice treat and I would recommend you trying them if you like fruity and/or beer.
The other flavors are Pomegranate Raspberry (I almost picked this one up instead) and Lime Cactus, which Rj claims was his favorite of the three, but I just can't wrap my head around cactus-flavored beer.
When I was 42 years OLD, my husband, from whom I was divorcing, said to me:: 'your life as woman is finished, not one would have you any more.' To old? Of course, he was in love with a 17 year old, more then half our age.
A little later, I looked at the last photo he made of me, in profile, 'is this me? This long nose?' I was always aware of my freckled skin, but it was the first time I noticed my nose!
Going to visit my father and friends, to another country, I told of my sorrow to my step mother: 'no one wants and will want me any more!'
'No problem, she replied, I know a doctor who can arrange your nose for you and shortly you'll have a nice one!' Of course, she knew that would make my father angry at me and that is what she wanted.
Exactly as she expected my father told me.
'No way you touch your nose! '
' I am adult now, more then 42 years old, I do not need someone else to tell me now what to do or not do.'
' I disherit you if you go!'
I went away from their house, crying, deciding to sleep at my aount's. He had an older friend, a charming, 80 years old man, loving my 75 years old aount dearly and making even dinner for her, for us, that evening.
'So what is the problem?' he asked me at dessert.
I told hime my sorrow and about my nose and my father.
'Your nose is part of your personality, you'd not like to loose it, it is great, makes you charming and interesting,' he said.
'But the men...'
'Do you look at them?'
'Look?'
'Choose the one you want, look at him, then look away and let him come after you, fight for you.'
'Ah?'
'You'll have as many as you want! he told me. And keep your interesting face as it is!'
I kept my nose, my stepmother lost her battle.
And when a few month later I went to the US, yes, many men looked at me, and I did not feel OLD any more. My nose did not bather me ever since.
We were all set up, ready to take portraits of kindergarten folk, for the Elegant Event that my sister Trish and her co-teacher Karen put on each year. It's a fun time where the kids get dressed up, have formal portraits taken, parade into the classroom, have a luncheon complete with menu, and a bill to be paid, then a time for dancing. It teaches manners, with a lot of laughter included.
I took the few minutes before the whirlwind began to sit a spell. My Karen Sue, had my second camera in hand, and took that time to re-familiarize herself with the setup in this lighting. Overhead florescent lighting in a school library. She set about taking pictures of various things, one of which was me.
As I was reviewing the images, making selections for further processing, I was struck with how natural I look. Not a forced smile, not that wild look I get when I'm trying to figure out if the camera holder is "doing it the way I would." I was relaxed. Karen got it!
So, I'm making this my new icon image. Well done, by my dear bride, my Karen Sue.
Struggle
I made this SP one night (in September) when I was struggling with my PAD project and some other things. I was going for a gritty kind of feel and I think I achieved it. I haven't posted it until now because I didn't quite hit the focus on my eyes (or they moved or something) and I just wasn't sure I wanted to post something this personal (if that makes any sense at all). But I was sorting through my PAD photos tonight (almost finished :D yay) and I saw it and decided I was going to go ahead and post it.
Scan from a circa 1983 self-timer photograph of me while traveling.

Well it had to happen, with a name like Teddy ;) She doesn't look best pleased about it, but she was very gracious and let me dress her up like a cute teddy bear girl ♥

Custom Blythe by KarolinFelix wearing a dress set from Dollymama (thank you Amy!) and bear headband from pumuq
~
She's a little ray of sunshine, and though this isn't her usual style she does look cute ♥
As you can see, she has a hybrid body with licca arms on a stock body. It suits her so i'm not keen to put her on a neemo, but hell those rubbery bendy legs are difficult for me to work with! Hence the stand here, and i never use stands :S

So I've decided to start 52-week self portrait thingie for a few reasons:
1. I am narcissistic but I hate my photos being taken so I have to try to balance this out.
2. Most of my flickr heroes have done it.
3. 365 is too cumbersome and it wouldn't leave any time for anything else apart from staring at my ugly mug every day
4. It'll help me remember to give my cat her weekly tablet
5. ..blah...improve photographic skills...blah...can't focus properly to save my life...blah.....
I don't know why I picked this idiotic photo to start but I guess if anybody likes this pathetic piece of self-loathing they'll probably like subsequent ones so I'm safe. The teeth have been dodged because I couldn't stand the greyness but I did a crappy job on purpose because I hate the hypocrisy of it all. So, it's me.
My brother is the worst wardrobe remix photographer. Truly terrible. Oh well - here's what I wore yesterday, to do 6 hours of improv, debate about existentialism, busk for 2 hours, go on a 3-way date, & nap in the library.

Passano in fretta 15 giorni cazzo. Cazzo come passano in fretta.
She's not afraid; she just likes to use her night light
When she gets paid, true religion gets it all
If they fit right.
She's a little bit manic, completely organic
Doesn't panic for the most part.
She's old enough to know, and young enough not to say no
To any chance that she gets for home plate tickets to see the Mets.
Like everybody, she's in over her head,
Dreads Feds, Grateful Dead, and doesn't take meds.
She's a Gemini Capricorn
Thinks all men are addicted to porn.
I don't agree with her half the time,
But, dang I'm glad she's mine.
Her eyes, that's where hope lies.
That's where blue skies
Meet the sunrise.
Her eyes, that's where I go
When I go home.
She got the kinda strength that every man wishes he had.
She loved Michael Jackson up until he made Bad.
Tells me that she lives about a hundred lives,
Scares me to death when she thinks and drives,
Says cowboy hats make her look fat,
and I'm so glad she's mine.
Her eyes, that's where hope lies.
That's where blue skies
Meet the sunrise.
Her eyes, that's where I go
When I go home.
She doesn't know the word 'impossible'
Don't care where I've been and doesn't care where we're goin' to.
She takes me as I am, and that ain't easy.
She's beautiful. So beautiful.
And sometimes I think she's truly crazy.
And I love it.
Her eyes, that's where hope lies.
That's where blue skies
Always meet the sunrise.
Her eyes, that's where I go
When I go home.
Her eyes, that's where hope lies.
That's where blue skies
Always meet the sunrise.
Her eyes, that's where I go
When I go home.
She's not afraid
she just likes to use her night light.
a little experiment while I don't go out and shoot new things
this is not a major jump like this one but the field is tricky and sometimes plays pranks (a.k.a.: bone fractures)
P.S.: I love linking my flickr shots together!
