I decided to go for a walk... on the Blue Ridge Parkway in a snowstorm with 55 mph wind gusts and a high of 14 °F (-10 °C).
I took this image (from the tripod) after a hike of about 2 miles from where I parked at Beacon Heights (the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed on either side of Beacon Heights). The wind, at times, was exhilarating... it sounded like a train was bearing down on me and I'd turn to see a wall of white overtaking me. It would hit with enough force to hurt exposed areas of skin and push me along in total white-out. In a few seconds, it would be over and things would settle down. You may notice tire tracks in the snow in this shot. While I was quite alone in my own reverie and the wind here, I noticed a sound that wasn't the wind... it was tire chains. A park ranger drove up with his emergency blue lights on. My first thought was that they take the "Pedestrians Not Permitted On Viaduct" issue much too seriously... I had to walk the Linn Cove Viaduct to get to this place. He asked if I was having fun, explained he was just doing what park rangers do, checking the park for problems, and then took off for where I had started out.
It didn't occur to me until I heard him returning that there was a shot in keeping with the theme of my last post to be made... him driving by with the blue lights running and me standing by this sign. I had to run back to position myself, but he drove by before the timer went off. As Maxwell Smart used to say, "Missed it by that much." I would have titled that shot "They're Coming To Take Me Away (Ha ha, hee hee, ho ho)!" That's because the only people you see doing this kind of thing are skiers and photographers... which means those people must be intrinsically a bit looney. And here's proof I am "those people".
A couple of things occurred to me in this shot... one, I need a longer jacket for this kind of condition. This is my warmest insulated jacket and I have layers on underneath... it rarely gets cold enough at home for anything more than a sweatshirt and fleece, so I almost never wear this jacket. Also, my face is red and frozen enough where it's difficult to smile. I left home this morning at 6:30, and saw no indication of snow until I reached North Wilkesboro about 2 hours later. By the time I reached Boone, it was a different world than what I'm used to. My answer to the park ranger was that I was having a great time, cold as it was. Ansel Adams axiom "f8 and being there" means exactly that, and I'm glad I was there. I'll post one of the shots from the Viaduct soon.

I'm really in the mood to take pictures. And I have ideas, but I don't feel taking them of myself. But I have them written down so I'm good. :)
I went to the dentist yesterday, and they thought all the wires and everything in my mouth were so cool, and they were so impressed. There is something in my mouth that they have never seen...wierd.
I'm so amazed that this got over 1,000 views, but thank you :)
“Wretch! If I am a wretch, who made me one? If I hate you and myself and the world, who made me hate it? I was born free - as free as you are. Why should I be sent to herd with beasts, and condemned to this slavery, worse than death? Tell me that, Maurice Frere - tell me that!”

OK guys cue up the soundtrack from Starsky and Hutch. This is me and my friend Ray wearing our seventies duds while visiting San Francisco for the first time. It was real fun especially when we stayed at the Turk Street YMCA where half the guys there looked like they spent the last several years pumping iron at San Quentin and cat called us as we went in.(Hotels.com where were you back then!) P.S. 7/24/24 Did a reprocessing of this shot with vastly superior photo software.
