Manchester Central Library Entrance 11.10.19
The golden bands in red are derived from the arms of the Lords of Manchester, the Gresleys, who ruled the city prior to 1301. Over time, the three bands have come to represent the three rivers in the city centre; the Irwell, the Irk and the Medlock.
The chief shows a ship in full sail, a symbol of trade and enterprise.
