It actually was very unsettling to be here taking pictures. The place has since been demolished but a little history for those interested:
Originally a movie theater that opened in 1930, The Eastown Theater, the main rival to the cross town Grande Ballroom, was a big "counter-culture" concert venue from 1969 thru 1972 seating 2,500 people. Concerts there included MC5, Stooges, Pink Floyd, Buddy Miles, Amboy Dukes, Rush, Howlin' Wolf, Alice Cooper, War, BB King, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Albert King, Mountain, Steve Miller, Sly and the Family Stone, Grand Funk - and that was just in the first few months it was open! It was known as the Eastown Theater for most of its life. The theater operated from 1930 until 1967. Outside of Rock Acts, it did reopen briefly in 1975 for Jazz acts, again in 1976 for Performing arts and plays, 1980 for avant garde and exploitation films, and a last attempt in 1984 for live performing arts again. It has also hosted a few techno raves in its time. It was originally designed by VJ Waier and was demolished after a fire completely destroyed the adjoining office building.
This is the place where Alice Cooper first started wearing a Top Hat, he found it in the dumpster here and always said this was one of his favorite places to play. Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes were the house band here.

The Grande Ballroom
Legends graced this stage. Bands such as Pink Floyd, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Local legends such as the MC5 and Bob Seger played here. The MC5 famously recorded their seminal song "KICK OUT THE JAMS" at this very location.

This is the historic Grande Ballroom. The Grande Ballroom is located on Grand River in Detroit. It is a historic dance hall and music venue. It became a popular place of emerging Detroit musicians, like MC5. It would also see stars like The Who, Janis Joplin and Pink Floyd play here. Originally it was built in 1928. It has been primarily abandoned since it closed as a rock venue in 1972.

We found lots of new murals on our last adventure. This was a cool one that had a lot of Detroit references.
An unusual view of a 21T HTV coal hopper in the exchange sidings at Maerdy colliery. Saturday 12th July 1986. The number of this hopper went unrecorded, as I was unwilling to climb up it to find it.
Windsor Never Forgets. Went down by train to Windsor U last week for a meeting. Took a walk to a library near our house. There are a couple of fun sculptures around the building. This little car is painted with the faces of the five members of the old late 60s grunge punk band from Detroit, The MC5. On the side of the car is painted the name of their first album and one of their big songs - Kick Out The Jams (Motherfuckers.) MC5 released it as a single in March 1969 first and then as the title of their first album
Dance hall & stage area of an abandoned theatre. A historic live music venue that had performances by rock legends such as MC5, Ted Nugent, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead & many more.

So I’ve featured the MC1 and MC2 here before, with those being operated from Grantham depot - and I’ve been on loan to Leicester this week, which has given me an opportunity to drive the MC3, MC4 and MC5 for the first time.
All three of those routes are covered on one duty, and my steed for the day was short ADL Enviro200MMC 5003, which was acquired from Falcon Buses last year, and is captured here working the 0925 journey on the MC5.
It’s seen here on one of the newest sections of route in Melton Mowbray (alongside the Alderman Road section of the MC2), on Heron Crescent, just off Melton Spinney Road. Much like the aforementioned section of the MC2, Heron Crescent is still very much under construction, with the top layer of road still absent, and a number of houses yet to be completed - as can be seen!
Very shortly, brand new Optare Solos will enter service on the MC3, MC4 and MC5.
NME (New Musical Express) published its list of the 500 all time greatest albums this week, based on its poll of roughly 80 critics who work for it. I saw a listing on the internet of the NME top 500 and it's set out below. The stars indicate the albums that would probably make my personal top 500 and the check marks indicate albums I've listened to that don't make my personal top 500.
This is in my sweet spot. When a bunch of highly knowledgeable critics decide on the "best ever' I'm going to seek that music out. They've heard more music than I ever have (there are 188 records on the list that I've never listened to).
Still, I have some quibbles about the list. The Smiths at #1? I've never understood the appeal of the Smiths. I went back and listened again to "The Queen Is Dead" and found it just as unbearable as ever. Maybe it's a British thing.
Second, no Robert Johnson or Hank Williams? I'm betting this is because the list seems to ban compilation albums and Johnson and Williams recorded exclusively as singles artists. But it just seems wrong to claim that the 500 best all time records don't include Hank Williams or Robert Johnson.
Third, where are the great British folkies? How can there be no Richard Thompson, no Fairport Convention, and no Pentangle? [Update: I see I'm wrong and that Fairport Convention is at #110. Still, why no Richard Thompson?]
Fourth, the list seems to ignore most of the world (maybe there's a rule saying English language only). But you can't have a list of the 500 best of all time with no Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and not a single album from Brazil.
Fifth, where's WIllie Nelson?

It has been known as the Eastown Theater for most of it's life. The theater operated from 1930 until 1967. Outside of Rock Acts, it did reopen briefly in 1975 for Jazz acts, again in 1976 for Performing arts and plays, 1980 for avant garde and exploitation films, and a last attempt in 1984 for live performing arts again. It has also hosted a few techno raves in it's time. It was originally designed by VJ Waier and is currently on the condemned list, doomed to be demolished after a fire completely destroyed the adjoining office building.
This is the place where Alice Cooper first started wearing a Top Hat, he found it in the dumpster here and always said this was one of his favorite places to play. Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes were the house band here.
No, I have no idea why there's a green dress hanging on the side of the stage.
The Vanity Ballroom in Detroit ( on Jefferson Avenue at Newport ) was originally designed by Charles Agree and opened in 1929. It is an Art Deco building with an Aztec Theme and was used primarily for Big Bands until the 1960's. It had a 5,000 foot maple dance floor that was built on springs to support the many dancers that would be there. Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington frequented here during it's heyday. It originally closed in 1958, reopened as a concert venue in 1964 and later used to host Detroit acts such as the MC5. There used to be stores all along the front, including Cunningham Drugs Store, which was a big chain of stores in Detroit.
There has been a lot of awareness lately and a concerted effort ( finally ) to pursue renovating this legendary facility - I hope it gets completed despite the 8 million dollar estimate
CM3307, GML10 and RL309 combine to haul 4MC5 empty QUBE Logistics grain to Junee through the outskirts of Glenroy towards Jacana.

( EXPLORED !!! ) One of Alice Cooper's favorite places to play at during his early years, the Eastown Theater caught on fire a few weeks back and I'm sad to say 2/3 of it is gone and there appears to be no saving it. Coincidentally, the week before the fire the ornate Shakespeare type heads were stolen off the roof arches at each corner of the building.
Some history:

RL310 and VL360 power through Beveridge, the lowest point of the Great Dividing Range, as 5MC5 empty QUBE Logistics grain service. From here the pair will power all the way to Seymour before having a somewhat flatter run North to Junee for loading.

Kramer came to prominence as a teenager in 1964 as a co-founder of the Detroit rock group MC5 (Motor City 5), a group known for their powerful live performances and radical left-wing political stance. MC5 broke up amid personality conflicts, drug abuse, and personal problems, which, for Kramer, led to several fallow years, as he battled drug addiction before returning to an active recording and performing schedule in the 1990s.
H885LOX was a Mercedes 811D / Carlyle C17. B28F new as London Buses MC5 in August 1990. It passed to Stagecoach London before transfer to Stagecoach Fife as their number 5 in 1996. It passed to Burns of Paisley in 1999 and was operated by their Green Line, EB Travel and Fox buses companies. The operating centre was at Braehead. EB Travel was owned by Elaine Burns, wife of Jim.
I modified this one from my original picture to put more accent on the architecture.
