Like in most countries, Japanese intermodal trains have levels of priority. The hottest intermodal train on JR's Tokaido Main Line is Sagawa Transport's "Super Rail Cargo". Sagawa (think UPS or FedEx) is one of the most prominent logistics companies in Japan. A lucrative money maker for them is transporting cargo between Osaka and Tokyo via specialized trains, dubbed the M250 Series.
Built in 2002 by 3 manufacturers for JR Freight, the M250 Series is basically an EMU that hauls freight. Two power cars on each end bracket the train. Each car contains one to two specialized containers for Sagawa. The goal was twofold, increase acceleration due to multiple powered axles, and reduce highway emissions. From Osaka to Tokyo (and vice versa), these trains can make the run in 6 hours, compared to 7 hours via conventional electric locomotive hauled trains.
Since these trains originate and terminate during the overnight hours, getting them in daylight is only possible during the long summer months. Here, the Sagawa Train crosses over Ishibashi just before sunrise.
