... I guess I'm a professional late bloomer. My wife has had Max Lucado's books around the house for years and I figured he was just another (yawn) Christian writer and then one morning I ran out of reading material.
I had been on a Joel Rosenberg kick for weeks (actually still am to some extent) and then discovered I'd read all his books available on the internet, but there I was with nothing to read and I still had my two cups of morning coffee to drink. Man, I can't do coffee "cold turkey."
I wheeled my way over to one of Sherry's bookcases and the first book I found was one of Max's. I thought, "What the hell, this'll get me through this morning's coffee."
I went to Max's website and among many things found a quick source of his books and sermons. Then I went to Oak Hills Church website and found more information. Nowhere did I find on either website the invitation "contact us." I would imagine adding those two words would create the need for a new fully staffed building about the size of the Empire State Building to respond.
When I did an "image" Yahoo search on Oak Hills Church, I discovered twelve out of eighteen images were of Max himself. That is fitting, because obviously Max IS Oak Hill Church and that's as it should be.

If you'd like to do some more serious research on Max Lucado, here's what Wikipedia has to say:

I've had coffee with Max for several mornings, now and I find his writing truly defines his nomer "Up Words." I am always UP after three chapters (they're very short and painless) of Max's writing.
Max takes the stories of the Bible, possibly mentions the parable at the outset, then tells you a story of today, somewhere, refers back to the Bible and then launches into a third departure and culminates the chapter with a forceful explosion of the Bible story. At least that's the effect it has on me. My mother might have said, "He makes the Bible live." I would say he uses the technique of three-deep induction with genius level skill. He is the great communicator who could have been Ronald Reagan's mentor.
In everything I've discovered these last few days, Max Lucado embodies the message of love that Jesus brought first to the Jews and then to the rest of us.
While doing more research on Max and the Oak Hills Church, I found a website filled with spite, hate, lies and prejudice condemning Max, the Oak Hill Church and calling them a Cult. The writer of this website is so filled with rage, it's difficult to follow his syntax or to even understand his reasoning. There is no chain of thought. I'll sleep on it for a day or two and decide if I want to post the url for that hate group. I don't have a large audience, but I don't want to advertise them even to the 200 or so people who regularily visit my site and that's my thoughts on the writings of Max Lucado for this beautiful day, August 25, 2008.
...the testing (trials) of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:3-4 CSB The circumstances we ask God to change are often the circumstances God is using to change us. #MaxLucado

My parents were inducted as elders to their church, Oakhills Church, in San Antonio Texas. Their church is nice, and Max Lucado is a giant in the Christian community. David Robinson from the Spurs also teaches here now and again. Both Max and David baptized me in a river which was a lifetime dream of mine.
It was kind of fun watching dad's face all glowing- even though it looked like the Republican National Convention up there. I know he wishes I went more often, and I am very happy for him... but my path to God is different than his path... and he just doesn't get that.

"We expect God to speak through peace, but sometimes he speaks through pain…
We think we hear him in the sunrise, but he is also heard in the darkness.
We listen for him in triumph, but he speaks even more distinctly through tragedy. "

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18 ESV God never said that the journey would be easy, but He did say that the arrival would be worthwhile. #MaxLucado

An Excerpt from Mocha with Max, by Max Lucado:
LOVE IS PATIENT ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4
"The Greek word used here for patience is a descriptive one. It figuratively means 'taking a long time to boil.' Think about a pot of boiling water. What factors determine the speed at which it boils? The size of the stove? No. The pot? The utensil may have an influence, but the primary factor is the intensity of the flame. Water boils quickly when the flame is high. It boils slowly when the flame is low. Patience 'keeps the burner down.'
Helpful clarification, don't you think? Patience isn't naive. It doesn't ignore misbehavior. It just keeps the flame low. It waits. It listens. It's slow to boil. This is how God treats us. And, according to Jesus, this is how we should treat others."
