The clouds in this shot remind me of the cloud belts on the planet Jupiter.
A few more shots from a couple weekends ago.
Although you can't see in the shot above, a lot of rocks in and around the river were still covered with snow and ice. The river is shallow, but very cold - so you don't want to slip into it. To get a lot of my shots, I went about a third of the way across the river, jumping from rock to rock until I found a good perch for the tripod.
I have to admit, I am a *great* rock scrambler. I can nimbly climb and hop from perch to perch, even when carrying lots of gear. My husband, on the other hand, is too ambitious for his own good. He tries to take short-cuts to cross the water faster. Guess who ended up *in* the river? (hint: it wasn't me!) Although, I did cut myself up climbing through thorny thickets and bruise my shins crossing a big pointy rock. But at least I didn't get wet!
The Maury River has recently been designated as a Virginia Scenic River due to its beauty and historic status. It also holds the distinction of being the only river in Virginia to start and stop in the same county. It provides lots of fun paddling and running the rapids during the months of April through June due to high water levels.

The Maury River flows through Goshen Pass in Rockbridge County, Virginia. I took this shot from the overlook far above, zooming in for a closer view. The water was considerably lower than it likely is now, following several rain and snow events since I took the shot.
