in a rural school near Kalaw/Myanmar
Approximately every second village has a primary school. Often, the distance for the children is more than 3km, in rural areas, schools are often further away from home. Only 46 percent of schools have sanitary facilities.
A joint overview of UNESCO, UNDP and the Ministry of Education showed that 57 percent of schools are overloaded and the textbooks are hopelessly out of date, some of which date from the 50s and 60s. Also one third of primary school teachers are not qualified. Less than half of primary school children finish primary school.
Personally I was a bit shocked about the education methods I could witness: The teacher was saying something and all of the children were repeating it like in a chorus.
Although the school is free, the parents have to pay extra for many things, including school uniforms, textbooks, books, school cleaning, exam materials. Due to the underpayment of teachers teach teachers teaching material increasingly in paid private lessons, to the existence of the tests is linked. Many can not afford these additional courses.
It is said, that the new government, elected in 2015 will improve the conditions for the education system in Myanmar now.

this photo has been through the wars but i still love it. it's actually one frame that's been scanned wrong at the developers and cut in two. the battery was flat in the camera, so it's massively under-exposed and the scan has come out different on each half and i can't really match it.
still, the feel is still there, i think.

What could the boys be looking up? Is one of them surreptitiously having a smoke?
Note the blazer badge *BBS* and how smart all the boys are!
Intense concentration - I have the names of nearly all the boys - they signed on the reverse of the photograph - see the next picture.
I am sent and bequeathed photographs relating to Alexandria and its disappeared communities to index and record. This was indeed a bequest.
But who is the teacher? Is it SHELLARD and "who is who" on this photo.
I hope to have answers soon.
