More than 30 elementary students in kindergarten through second grade recently explored math through art, physical activity and music as part of BU’s annual Math Camp, which also helped participating education majors learn fundamental themes for math learners.
It’s a collaborative benefit, according to Frank D’Angelo, assistant professor of early childhood and adolescent education, who says through the math camp BU’s education program is helping local elementary students get ready for the new school year. bloomu.edu/news-math-camp

This group-prepared lesson uses Microsoft Word to introduce a math lesson on multiplication. Students discover how to insert a table into a document, with multiple rows and columns, and then are asked to count the number of squares. Two rows by two columns? That's easy - 1, 2, 3, 4. Six rows by 4 columns? Ok - 1, 2, 3, ... 23, 24. Now, fifteen rows by twenty columns? Let's multiply! (If you think counting the 300 resulting squares would take awhile, think about how long it would take the teacher to draw this table on the blackboard! He is instead using the interactive whiteboard and his creative thinking to prepare activities where students discover the answers themselves.)
