What can we learn from the best teaching and learning practices of mathematics around the world? Who was the first woman to run for President of the United States and why is her story still relevant today? While more and more young people achieve higher education degrees, youth unemployment continues to rise – so what are we going to do about it? There is a new House of Books in Kabul created by an inspiring young Afghan woman. What would change if Diane Ravitch or Charles Fadel were Secretary of Education for the new US administration? And how do we better engender a healthy, happy, and productive school environment where both teachers and students can flourish? Those were the questions that most intrigued us this month.

Ihor Charischak (http://climeconnections.blogspot.com/) digitized this recording of a long-lost Seymour Papert keynote delivered at the National School Boards Association Technology + Learning Conference in 1994.
In this video, Papert explores constructionism vs. instructionsm, the potential of the Internet, teacher "training," the choice between Monday and Someday, as well as what we can learn from watching children play video games OR what children can learn by making video games.
Fast forward through the conference formalities if you wish. One could argue for removing this video from the clip, but the nostalgic nature of it reminds you how little has changed in the way edtech is hyped and promoted. This makes Papert's message that much more compelling and urgent. Dr. Papert begins at the 20-minute mark.
This talk was presented the year after the publication of Papert's classic book, "The Children's Machine..."

Many thanks to my old friend Ihor for adding to the growing library of Papert materials publicly available.
