I am grateful for fall. In America, fall is the season for American football. I grew up watching and going to games and marching in college and highschool football games. Now, professional football is something I watch with my family and friends - footaball means gathering. More importantly, it even means fun times with our youngest son Hobbs - who just started tackle football this year for the first time. I am so very grateful for Matt - the father of my boys. He's patient, and kind to them. He makes them laugh. He pulls them out of a pit when they are having a hard time better than their mom (shown here, when Hobbs was losing his mind because his team was performing so badly). He gets involved and gets excited about whatever they are excited about - even when it's not his strength. Matt has been water boy for Hobbs' football team all season just to be on the field and share in the experience with Hobbs - and Matt has only played basketball his whole life. Matt is my boys' live-in math tutor (thank God!) and their xbox video game competition. Matt is their prayer warrior, and their leader. Even when I wasn't sure I wanted to marry Matt, I knew I wanted him to be the father of my children - and he's never made me regret that decision. I love watching him be their dad. And I love football Saturdays and big sports bars with college football playing on every screen! :-)

Many religious Jewish families are large. I'm not sure how they manage to support themselves, but having many children is certainly an admirable quality, especially in our day and age. It must be a Jewish holiday again. Many stores in my neib are closed. On the left there are the typical Math Tutoring ads stuck to a light pole and two cyclists - riding a bicycle is a much cheaper way than maintaining a car and much faster than walking. I wish I had one.

Stranger #133 - Marleen

Today while I was eating a delicious hamburger, I looked out the window and saw a mother and two kids playing in the grass. They were chasing each other, laughing and giggling, and I couldn’t help but marvel at how cheerful they looked. It was a picture perfect scene. I quickly took the last bite of my burger, threw away my trash, and made my way over to them.

“Hi, you guys look adorable, can I please take your picture?”... is what I basically said.

Of course it took a bit more explaining exactly why I was interested in taking their photo, but Marleen was heart-meltingly kind about it. We started chatting and I learned few things about Marleen.

Marleen is a one-of-a-kind math tutor-- the kind of math tutor who is so passionate about math that she would get a tattoo of her favorite math equation on her forearm. She absolutely loves that she is able to help students learn about math, while still being able to spend time with her kids.

“Math is my independent passion, but raising my kids is my other one.”

I was so impressed by Marleen’s joy and brightness that I felt my own spirit being lifted up by hers. I then told her that one of my favorite things about this strangers projects is that we are able to learn about and encourage each other. I asked her if I could pray for her. As if it was even possible to light up even more, she lit up once again, and told me that she and her husband have wrestling with the tough decision to move to Colorado. It’s a big decision that would affect the entire course of their life. Happily, I put my hand on Marleen and prayed for her.

“Marleen, I pray that doors would open for you and your family and that God would give you a clear sign and guide you-- and whatever decision you guys end up choosing, know that you guys have each other. Lord, fill this family with your love and continue to give them joy”.

Marleen, thanks for being a huge blessing on me today and letting me take pictures of your cute family!

One of my private students specifically asked me to be at her birthday. I checked with her mom it was ok, and it was more than ok. I think it says a lot about our relationship that she invites her math tutor to her party.

She is second from the left, here.

Yay I'm all caught up. & 10 days til I finish my 365. Thank goodness.

Today had such lovely weather, but I missed most of it due to being in bed. & then when I finally got out of bed (round about 1.30pm) I had to reply to emails & tidy up the script. I heard my Dad talking to someone outside in the garden & panicked because I totally wasn't dressed appropriately for anyone at all to see me. So I ran & threw on some more appropriate clothes & went back to work, & then my Dad came in to say he'd been showing the Custos round the garden & to se if I'd been doing anything useless. When he went back up to school I then had another panic because I thought I'd lost this business card with an email address on it that I needed. I think I should point out that I was given this business card in November, so it's a minor miracle that I found it exactly where I'd left it all that time ago (so really there is a method in my untidiness).

After all that panicking I figured I get dressed even more appropriately (I'd just thrown on the first things that had come to hand before) & headed outside. It was so lovely, but a bit windy. I had some more editing work to do, so I took my laptop out onto the bench under the tree seen in this photo, but the contrast was irritating so I had to head back in quite quickly - but not before playing with Abby for a little bit.

I spent quite a while cooking, because that seemed a nice way to pass the time, & ate lunch while reading the paper. I finished up editing & then headed outside for some photo taking, which was nice. Nothing specific, just randomness. & when I came back in Hugh was home from school. Wow the day passes quickly when you're in bed for half the day. But when am I going to have these chances again? Certainly not when I have to get a proper job and join the adult world. So I'll enjoy this now.

Hugh moaned about his maths tutoring and how he finds this teacher too difficult to work with & he doesn't want to have another lesson with him. I told him to go & talk to Dad about it. The end result was that this was his last lesson with this particular tutor. I then had another panic when I realised that I had rehearsals and I'd almost forgotten. I'd said last night that everyone needed to remind me, but I guess they'd all forgotten that too. So I got changed again and took my laptop instead of bothering looking for my script.

Boffey met me in the AC & the Coppinger turned up a few minutes later. He'd remembered to bring a change of clothes with him, and he got the keys off the media teacher so we could rehearse in one of the classrooms. He hadn't told any of the others we were rehearsing today, so if I hadn't text him a reminder this afternoon neither he or Boffey would have turned up. Vicky had gone home. So we just went over Act 2, refining lines again & then we had Coppinger chucking water on himself a couple of times to work out how best to do that. It left a wet patch on his boxers, which I felt bad about. But they were really frustrating today. Boffey kept texting, & her parents both called to see how her exams had gone, then Dom was all whiney because he wasn't sure to date this girl or not, & it was like "FOCUS!" people.

I was glad to get out of there. Usually I'm a bit reluctant to go to rehearsals, but when I'm there it lifts my mood. Not today. So I took the long route home & passed by my Dad's office, where he was walking in the corridor. I went into his office & chatted for a while as he sorted out his work for the next day. Then he showed me this painting & we walked home together and I went out into the garden with him. I really like all the changes to the garden. I'm actually starting to find gardening kinda sweet and interesting. Not to do, but to observe.

I started on some more endless editing and watched Outnumbered. My Dad came in to watch the second episode of Outnumbered that we had recorded. & then my Mom came in to do some work & I did some more writing & omgg I watched the episodes of Lost we had recorded. I couldn't watch the part while the water was flooding into the submarine because I'm so freaked out about drowning. & my Mom gets freaked out about it too so she was telling me not to say anything about it to her. So yeah, together we were both freaked out. Hugh came in to say goodnight & I told him good luck before his first exam. My laptop was being difficult and nothing was loading, but I managed to finish before my Dad turfed me out.

Maths tutoring today - subtraction

My most recent (and by far the happiest) lens purchase was the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 prime. My one regret (and shame) was that I wasn't seduced by it sooner ... But better late than never.

I purchased the lens in the Olympus Winter Cashback period from SRS Microsystems (great folks) and it was on order and I couldn't wait ... But then after it arrived ironically it sat unboxed as I had sworn not to "waste" it on photos of the rubbish in my flat and my health was preventing me from going out.

I finally took the lens for an outing and was in Gregg's in Newkirkgate in Leith and this lovely couple were seated next to me.

When the lady went to the loo, the gentleman remarked (about my PEN-F sporting the lens that was sitting on the table in front of me), "That's some camera you've got!"

(How to win friends and influence people, for sure!)

Anyway we got to chatting and it turned out he was a long-time devotee and used to develop his own (colour) 35mm slides at one time ... Now more keen on video.

When his wife returned she told me their story - apparently it was a camera that had brought them together 65 years ago (now 64 years married).

Apparently she had been walking along with a camera on her arm and her husband to be asked whether she would take his picture! Cheeky!

Apparently she refused but then they bumped into one another a week later and, the rest, as they say, is history! (No not history, since they are very much still around, but you know what I mean!)

Anyway just as they were leaving I gathered up the courage to ask them to let me take their photo - and so this was one of the first "proper" pictures taken with my by now firmly beloved lens.

I showed them the image on the LCD and promised to print it out and leave it behind the counter for them at Greggs (about to go over and do that now) and they said they were "The Borthwicks". Turns out one of my maths tutors at the Open University is also a Borthwick and so I must send him this photo and ask whether he knows them!

Well when I looked at the image a bit later on on my iPad I confess I was a touch disappointed as the gentleman's eyes are slightly squinting ... and ironically due to the reason why I bought the lens in the first place (excellent subject isolation) the lady's face is just slightly out of focus ... I felt it wouldn't be a "keeper" other than due to the story ... But I've grown fond of it and framed it seems to look more natural and not so "unbalanced".

I hope that the story has been enjoyable however!

Blessings to you all and a long and loving life to come still for Mr and Mrs Borthwick.

Earle Leeder, whose family has owned the Arcade mall in Coolidge Corner since 1943, has made it a policy not to rent to corporate chains — even if he’s not making as much money in rents as his neighbors.

“We’ve always tried to keep the independent owners,” said Leeder, whose management company also owns buildings housing neighbors Rami’s and Dellaria Salon, which is a local chain. “We don’t bleed these people to death. We try to keep the rents moderate.”

Leeder claimed a large chain has only once approached him. Years ago, Osco Pharmacy made an offer for the Arcade, but according to Leeder, “Nothing really came of it.”

Walking through the Arcade is a bit like entering a time warp into an era before corporate giants, such as CVS and The Gap, ever existed.

A hallway of stores — each no larger than 400 square feet — modestly advertises a dressmaker, shoe repair, math tutoring and a barbershop.

Michael Lakher, an optometrist who works in the Arcade, just around the corner from national chain Lenscrafters, said he doesn’t worry about the big box stores. His neighbors in the Arcade have a symbiotic relationship.

“Here, actually, it’s very easy to stay in business,” said Lakher, who moved his practice to the Arcade two years ago from Harvard Street for the lower rents. “Everybody sends people to each other.”

Cristaldi, whose Caffe La Scala starts buzzing with lunch as early as 11:30 a.m., said succeeding in a small business is all about offering what the chain stores can’t — someone who will remember you.

“A lot of it is being personal. You’re not going to go to Panera and they’ll know your name, how your daughter’s doing and how’d she do on that test,” Cristaldi said.

Cristaldi, who has owned the café for eight years, said he worries less about chains and more about vacant storefronts — that’s because all of those people who work at the bank have to eat somewhere, he said.

Although he isn’t visible from the street, Cristaldi said paying roughly half in rent what other Harvard Street businesses pay has helped him and others realize their dreams.

“If my rent was $5,000 a month and I was on the street, I would never be able to afford the first year,” he said. “[Leeder] gave a lot of people a shot at opening up a business or buying a business who couldn’t otherwise.”

Leeder, 73, who grew up on Green Street and now lives in Weston, downplayed the notion.

“If I take and rent a large portion of the building, what am I going to do? Kick these people out? I’m not going to put the nail in their coffin,” he said. “You got to have these business here for people who need their services.”
