As long as there is enough volume of a recoverable material such as plastic bottles #1 PET and #2 HDPE such as your water bottles, detergent bottles, milk bottles, there is a market for it. Forget about blister packaging, bottle caps, pill bottles and those pesky #5 yogurt containers. All the plastic collected here goes to China where it is made into carpet backing, plastic wood, polar fleece and all. Governments legislate how our garbage is to be recycled, but it is the job of the hauler to find a market for it. China no longer wants our mixed plastic because they were just getting too much crap. We need to pass legislation to get manufacturers to stop producing this waste. This is called Extended Producer Responsibility.
Whatever you put into those recycling bins ends up in this pile. This is Ken Wells who has done an extraordinary job of making Sonoma County a stellar example of materials recovery. Their recycling guide is the best in the country. www.recyclenow.org
Aluminum is the easiest to recycle and saves tons of energy over making new cans so it's really criminal not to recycle aluminum cans.
The paper has its own pile. Here's the bulldozer that pushes it onto the conveyor belt. You can see the people standing at the top sorting. They do what is called a "positive sort" and pull out different categories of paper. Then they switch and do the plastic.
This transfer station serves San Francisco and northern peninsula. They had a kitchen fully stocked with enough glasses to serve water to our entire group. No disposable cups here!
Whether our customers need to create a better rehabilitation tool for stroke patients, manufacture custom electronics for the aerospace industry, or build a unicycle that self-balances, we can be the creative solution to support the vision...
The sorting floor. This is the construction waste end. Construction waste is one of our biggest categories of garbage if not the biggest. So don't worry about those plastic yogurt containers. Find a reuse for those kitchen cabinets you're replacing.

Mixed paper is most often shipped to fiber poor countries where only tropical hardwood trees grow. We do have our own paper mills that take recovered paper of a higher grade. These paper mills are having to adapt to the new single stream recycling that is becoming the way most towns handle recycling even though it degrades the recoverable material. It is simply more convenient for the public and gets more people to recycle so more materials are recovered in the end.

ControlTek has just added two new Heller 1809 MKIII Reflow Ovens and a 3 chamber Trident LD Automatic Defluxing system to our production facility. The new equipment provides additional speed and flexibility during changeovers as well as enhanced product reliability from contaminant-free manufacturing processes.
Also shredded and sent to a composting facility. Pallets are kind of like disposable chopsticks. A lot of wood for transporting goods to consumers and rarely reused looks like.
Our host Barbara Bernadini. The business is owned by an Italian family. No not like the Sopranos. I thought she was cool and completely got the need for reducing our creation of garbage. Garbage companies have plenty to deal with as it is. This facility is not big enough to do all the materials recovery they would like to do. Garbage collection is still one of our cheapest services. If we had to pay more to dispose of our waste we would do more to reduce it.
