Here's a good look at Mega-Gun in his robot mode. Don't judge the paint apps too harshly based on this pic; remember that he only stands a bit over two inches tall. In person, he actually looks pretty darned good. He also has a pretty good (though not fantastic) amount of articulation (which is understandable, given his size.) I should note that, while not as articulated as Fansproject's Sidearm, he still kicks the living shit out of any actual Hasbro targetmaster figure. EDIT: It's worth mentioning that I got an email from Captured Prey this morning which invalidates the criticism; they noted that the legs can actually be separated (I didn't even try), but they recommend that care be taken because they can't move that much and excessive force can break the figure. I appreciate the heads up.
A close-up of the not-Headmaster. While I can kinda wish he was as articulated as the not-Targetmasters from MasterShooter Collectables, I still dig him.
Since they're pretty comparable, I figures that showing Sidearm and Mega-Gun together wouldn't go amiss. One definite advantage Mega-Gun has over Sidearm is that he actually looks, y'know, like a *gun*.He can also be held by any Transformer without looking stupid because unlike Sidearm, who has two different sized handles, he has a stepped peg, meaning that it'll fit in both standard Transformers hands as well as Targetmaster ones (they have different sized holes, for those that didn't know.)
Mega-Gun is also a little taller in robot mode, which is only appropriate. After all, Megatron is supposed to be pretty damned intimidating.
Final Assessment: while a little pricier than Sidearm ($18 to Sidearm's $10), I still recommend this figure. He's a hell of a lot of fun (just be careful not to lose his fusion cannon/sight; it cones off during transformation.)
Since I had 'em handy (with the exception of my Masterpiece Megatron, who is still back in LargoCave Prime), I figured that a group shot of all of my G1 and G1-inspired Megatrons would be in order.
Here's Mega-Gun out of the packaging (which also allows us to look at the card art, making the "Unicorn" of the bio on the back make more sense :P) While you can't see it from the front, Mega-Gun also has an adapter that will allow him to be connected to any Seeker's wing while the Seeker is in jet mode.
Unsurprisingly, this is how I plan to display the figures. Oddly, Mega-Gun is a little loose in Classics Starscream's hand, but he sits very snugly in every other Seeker's hands (even Universe Starscream, which is, ostensibly, the same damned mold. But since Universe Starscream has the Coronation Kit put on him, I have to use Classics Screamer to hold Mega-Gun. Oh, well.)
One of the most unexpectedly cool things about this figure was the packaging. Go ahead and look at this in a larger size and read the figure's bio. If you are at all familiar with the animated '86 Transformers movie, you'll get a chuckle out of it.
For scale (and because they're going to be displayed together), here are Mega-Gun and Classics Starscream together.
Unfortunately, the adapter to connect Mega-Gun to a Seeker's wing doesn't seem to fit very snugly on Screamer, either. I'm not terribly upset by this, however, because it's not like I'm ever going to use it.
This is Mega-Gun, a third party Transformer who looks veeeeery familiar. I saw this guy in his design states back in January and I put in an order for him immediately. Call me a sucker for old school-ish stuff, but a Megatron targetmaster? Mine. Here we have him as he came to me in the mail, still sealed in his box. As you'll see when we pop him open, Captured Prey was pretty clever in letting the instructions do double duty: they tell us how to transform the figure while also serving as packing material to keep Mega-Gun from flopping around inside his bubble.
