'Luted' or sealed crucible casting is a low-cost and low-tech method of casting, relatively unknown outside India and West Africa. It involves sealing the raw ingredients for bronze - copper and tin - into one half of a peanut-shaped crucible made from mud. The other half contains the wax model to be cast. The clay 'peanut' is baked, and when the metal is molten it is flipped over, and the molten bronze fills the cavity left by the wax.
Artist Piers Watson has been teaching this method all over the world, and came to the Institute of Making to lead a week-long exploration of how bronze making has been done since the early days of its history.
During the week members explored the fundamental techniques of 'luted' crucible bronze casting from making their own wax object, covering it in numerous layers of a mix of sand, clay and rice husks. Finally, we cast the crucibles in Piers' home-made gas furnace. Once cracked open they revealed some magical objects inside.

Artwork for the last show of the 2003-2004 season, and the last piece I worked on before my internship ended. The sheet music was picked up at the weekend market at Ashby BART station, crumpled and photographed in the BRT courtyard. (I was sort of hooked on sepia toning) The AD changed the logotype, but was happy with the rest. (Originally, the title was where Moreno's name is now, and in that style)
Incidentally, I got to return to Berkeley the following year to see the show, which was rather wonderful.
