The Roman town defences were built in two phases, both of which are visible here.

In about AD 200, a rampart of earth and clay was constructed, though it featured masonary gatehouses, built in stone and tile. A recess can still be seen, indicating the position where the gate would have hung.

The grassed-over remains of the rampart are visible on either side of the gate. In about AD 270 these defences were strengthened with a massive stone wall.

While the defences offered general protection from enemies, they also allowed for control of all traffic entering and leaving the town. Major, dual carriageway gates were situated to the east and west of the town and single carriageway gates were located to the south and here at the north.

The Cubo line of defense and the Northern edge of the fort Castillo de San Marcos. The fort was really just used as a warehouse until someone came along wanting to take over Saint Augustine, then it would become protection for as many as 1,500 people. It is oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States. As a side note, it was a great place to visit and offered many different photography chances.

The Lady Chapel was the first part of the Liverpool anglican cathedral building to be completed, was consecrated in 1910

The Wungnema House was built in 1946 by Burton and Pearl (Talas) Wungnema and served as the family’s home until the early 1970s. After the family moved from the house, it fell into disrepair and was subject to on-going vandalism until it was rescued by Carson City in the late 1990s and, using Quality of Life Initiative funding, the house was restored to serve as a meeting place for small community groups and organizations. Notable, in addition to the house's exterior masonry, is the fireplace and hearth that feature a Hopi clan symbol as well as stone from north-central Arizona, near the Hopi homeland.

Here is where they would keep an eye out on the ships that were making their way into the port. They could be seen well before the fort was in range, meaning that the fort was always ready when someone tried to come and invade.

The Parish Church of St Andrew

The village of Minting is situated a a few miles north-west from the town of Horncastle in the district of East Lindsey and the ancient wapentake of Gartree.

The parish church is dedicated to St Andrew and was almost completely rebuilt in 1864 in the Decorated style, the building contains some medieval masonary in the chancel.

Near the church is the site of Minting Priory, a 12th century Benedictine religious house.

This is Castillo de San Marcos the oldest free standing masonary fort in America.

It is over 330 yrs old and was built by spain to defend it's interest in the new world and stands on the banks of what is now St. Augustine Florida.

It is also one of the only forts NEVER taken or defeated in battle.

you can learn more about it here.

www.nps.gov/casa/historyculture/index.htm

it is also one of the most beautiful vistas i have seen in Florida and well worth the visit.

I apologize for the long wait between posts recently but as I mentioned i have been on travel AND I am learning the new photoshop CS5. This is my first venture with the new painting engine they have implemented. I still have quite a bit to learn and develop, but I can already tell you it is a really impressive tool with a lot of flexibility and capability to create some very interesting photos.

After the drama of sunsets and mountains, here's something a little more subdued. This is the ruin of Castle Tioram on it's little tidal island in Loch Moidart under low and heavy early morning cloud. It is a shame, but the castle is in a poor state now despite being a scheduled monument. The masonary is falling in and it is no longer possible to go inside the castle. The best write-up I've seen is here - www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/acharacle/castletioram/ind...

But from a photographic perspective, it is a really atmospheric place, and quite off the beaten track. I know some folk do know it (Peter, Tim, and perhaps more) but it is not a place that I have seen here on Flickr before. Well worth a visit!

Entrance to Leeds castle

I can't imagine what it was like to stand your ground an fight in a castle like this. It look big and sturdy but they fell all the time, when do you going from the nice secure feeling to that feeling your just a mouse stuck in a trap?

The Claerwen Dam is the largest Dam & latest it was built after the severe drought of 1937 when there was a need for more water The size of it is impressive a 184 Ft tall, built from concrete & caped with stone to much all the other dams in the area when full holds back 10,624,510,000 gallons of water which is more than the Caban Coch, Pen-y-Garreg Dam & the Craig Goch dams together. Philadelphia City Hall, August 6, 10:48 a.m.

This photo was taken from the east side of Philadelphia City Hall. It's an old building, so they apparently had to use window air-conditioners.

This is a detail shot of the main facade of St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh, Northern Ireland. I enhanced the detail of the statues and increased the contrast between them and the surrounding stone-masonry.

Ancient Temple ruins at Olympos / Turkey. On the hill to the east of the path looms a well-preserved marble door frame built into a wall of ashlar masonary. At the foot of the carved doorway is a statue base dedicated by an inscription to Marcus Aurelius.

Some beautiful late December afternoon sunlight created great conditions for framing the railway viaduct at Harringworth through the Winter trees.

Harringworth Viaduct is 1.16 Km long, has 82 aches 12 meters wide, and is built with some 30 million bricks. These impressive stats make it the longest masonary built viaduct in Britain.

Even a solitary bee needs friends sometimes.. My little bee house is very busy at the minute, I popped out in the garden today to see these two making more bees! I Hope you are all doing ok. HWW & HIHD

Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe. in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It was built in the mid-15th century as the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy. They extended both the castle and their territory in the area over the next 150 years. It is sadly another castle with barriers around it because of the risk of falling masonary.

A brick wall in a village outside Hanoi. Seeing it made me think of how may times it was destroyed and rebuilt. Part of the beauty of the Vietnamese people is their perseverance, and creative resourceful nature.

Tveitsund Bridge is part of national highway 41, and is located in the middle of the settlement Treungen in Nissedal municipality in Telemark. The bridge was built in 1918 and protected as a cultural monument in 1999

The bridge is 62.1 meters long and is the country's second longest stone vault bridge adorned with concrete columns with a span of 51 metres. The bridge has a width of 5 metres, and the carriageway is 4 metres. The bridge is characterized as a piece of high-class engineering. The construction is stretched to the outer limit of what is technically possible. The bridge is protected to be a visible memory of the development of communication and road construction, says the description of this cultural monument on the National Archives' website.

The small mound right by the bridge is a protected burial monument from the Late Iron Age.

The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity

Bungay is a small pretty market town on the River Waveney in the English county of Suffolk, close to the border with Norfolk.

The parish church of Holy Trinity is one of two medieval churches in the market town of Bungay. Both churches sit close to each other. Holy Trinity is the older of the two churches with a Saxon round town and herringbone masonary.

Holy Trinity is the only active parish church now in Bungay, with St Mary's now redundent and under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Long Island Railroad's Plandome Station (and Post Office) is all decked out for the Christmas holidays in 1978. In 1987 an 18 year old kid torched the structure. A new masonary replacement with similar looks was opened in 1990.

Foucault's Pendulum was designed by the French physicist Léon Foucault to demonstrate Earth's rotation. Here at the Panthéon, a long and heavy pendulum is suspended from the high roof over a circular disk, which was monitored over an extended time period, showing that the plane of oscillation rotated.
