Many of us are confidants and friends of people who continually talk about the lives of others, as if some divine power has given them that right. They do not do it in a way that could be described as "fortuitous", since for them, hypocrisy is a habitual recourse in communication, which serves them indirectly to reinforce their values by seeking the complicity of the other in criticism.
It cannot be denied that some people are masochists, and like to have others talk about them, even if it is to criticize them openly and intentionally hurt them.
The claws are as impressive as the rest of the cat, especially as Cleo knows how to use them whenever you do something she doesn't like. This may be the reason why most people in the family prefer to stay at a safe distance from her. I'm a masochist, though, and still touch her but after all these years I know when it's better to leave her in peace. :)
Fynn in front of one of the bee hotels in the garden. He pretty much ignores bees, I suppose he had some unpleasant ecounters in the past and has learned his lesson, but today he witnessed how his little brother Tofu got stung (again). Tofu is either a masochist or a very slow learner as this spring we have had at least 5 or 6 'bee incidents' so far.

Popped over to the The Skillion last week, a long time favourite spot of mine. It's a great place photography-wise. There is the Skillion itself you can see here. There are rockshelves to the north and south underneath. I've visited all of these many times over the years for taking photos at sunrise. There are surf beaches, protected harbours, pubs, cafes - a great seaside village vibe. We may have taken advantage of the pub for a delicious seafood gnocchi and cold beer afterwards. Several. Beers, not seafood gnocchis ;)
The Skillion itself is about 150m high and you can often spot sports teams, boot campers, and random masochists running up and down in an efort to kill themselves. It has some geologial signifigance beyond my understanding involving sedimentary rock, Middle Triassic thingies and Hawkesbury Sandstone.
So why we are on deep and meaningful thoughts - the hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread. Or these days I guess it's more like - the hardness of the olive oil spread is proportional to the softness of the eggplant discs.

View from Whiteface mountain, upstate New York, midday, they claim you can see Montreal on a clear day from the top, that was clear a day as it gets, no Montreal though, perhaps the night lights, 90 miles (150km) away may be visible. Having said that this was a rare clear day to see the nearer view without any haze or low clouds covering the peak. There is a toll road to the summit, minimal walking involved to see this view, the foot trail is strictly for masochists and training olympic athletes, only worth it on a clear day in early October, the bugs would eat you alive long before you reach the top in summer.

I don't really understand the rules of Opposite World, but I'm guessing that there a vampire would be invisible there but have a reflection. Looks like it should have been an easy shot right? Wrong! I spent three hours trying to set up a shot with me reflected in two mirrors (one inside the other), I finally gave up and settled for this one mirror version. Unless you're a masochist, don't try this unless you have 1) a model, and 2) a studio with blank, movable walls.

Special photographs are afforded when you bury your camera gear deep in your backpack and spend days searching for unique vantage points - this is something I had forgotten until recently. Last weekend, I did just that and spent several nights along the Art Loeb Trail in the Shining Rock Wilderness of western North Carolina. The trail leaves from the Davidson River near Brevard, eventually climbing to the summit of Black Balsam Knob before beginning its undulatory descent to the Daniel Boone Boyscout Camp. The trail is rife with spectacular views such as this, many of which are rarely "seriously" photographed (after all, what crazy masochist actually wants to backpack with 15 lbs of camera gear??).
We didn't hike the entire Art Loeb Trail, but instead began near Black Balsam Knob, heading towards Cold Mountain. While camping at Shining Rock Gap, I did some exploratory hiking the previous afternoon to scope out good locations for sunrise. As is typical, the sunset was mediocre while the sunrise was incredible. The cool mountains and warm/humid valleys interact overnight to generate great sunrises - don't be lazy and only shoot sunset in the Appalachians. If that's you're plan, you're likely to find yourself disappointed over and over again, in my opinion.
This particular shot was taken about 20 minutes before the sun fully rose over the distant mountains (in this case, the Black Mountains and Mt. Pisgah). Now that I finally own a good telephoto lens, I've been searching for the classic picture of interlocking mountain ridges - this spot does it for me, I think! I've got another shot taken about 15 minutes after this (same vantage) that I like even better. I'm sharing this one first to show just how ephemeral the mountains can be in morning. Never leave until you're absolutely convinced the show is over!
A simple sunrise photo, taken from my guesthouse balcony on Andros Island, Greece, in April the damn thing rises too early, and since I'm not too much of a masochist, I prefer to photograph it as close to my bed as I can. The skies were polluted by a sand cloud from Africa that morning and all of that day, quite depressing white sky, but it made a pretty sunrise.

BN has a northbound (eastbound to them) local racing towards Superior on the former NP "Skally" between the Twin Cities and the Twin Ports; the GP20 (2014) is running backwards as any devotee of Great Northern would know.

Es gibt in Frankreich wie anderswo eine Reihe von Eisenbahn-Motiven, an denen man einfach nur auf den passenden Zug warten muss, an denen eigentlich - wohlwollendes Wetter vorausgesetzt - überhaupt nichts schiefgehen kann. Und dann gibt es jene Sorte von Motiven, wo gleich eine Mehrzahl glücklicher Umstände zusammenkommen muss, um letztlich mit einem gelungenen Foto nach Hause zu kommen... Und masochistisch wie der gemeine Spotter nun mal veranlagt ist, sucht er sich diese besonders gerne aus! ;)
Der Forderungskatalog, den es am Viaduc de Carol - markantes Bauwerk an der traumhaft in den Pyrenäen gelegenen Strecke Toulouse - Latour-de-Carol - zu erfüllen gilt, ist dabei besonders dick: Zum einen möchte man sich natürlich bevorzugt eines interessanten Zuges bedienen. Den gibt es nur einmal am Tag in Form des Intercités de nuit nach Paris - Ansonsten dominieren Z 27500 den Betrieb. Und aufgrund der hohen Pyrenäengipfel liegt das Brückenbauwerk für ihn nur an den längsten Tagen des Jahres rund um die Sommersonnenwende im Licht. Dies jedoch nur bei absolut pünktlichem Verkehren des Zuges - Schon wenige Minuten nach der planmäßigen Durchfahrtzeit haben sich die Schatten zu weit voran gefressen! Eher sekundär mutet da der Wunsch an, dass die Zuglok doch bitte keine Maschine im (Nicht-)Farbschema "Fantôme" sein möge...
So war der 17. Juni 2017 auch schon der zweite Tag in Folge, an dem Urs und ich den steilen Hang unweit des Weilers Carol (Querol auf katalanisch) am gleichnamigen Gebirgsbach, einem Zufluss des Ebro, erklommen und an dem von uns ausgeguckten dekorativen Steinhaufen Stellung bezogen. Am Vortag war der Zug wegen eines Eisenbahnerstreiks in Limoges (!) ausgefallen. C'est la vie... Glücklicherweise hatten wir einen weiteren Tag als Reserve in petto. Dank eines vorangegangenen Besuchs beim "Agent de circulation" in Latour-de-Carol wussten wir immerhin, dass der Zug heute fahren sollte! Eine leichte Ungewissheit blieb jedoch. Würde er pünktlich sein und das Licht halten?
Um 19:31 Uhr fiel die Anspannung schlagartig von uns ab, als BB 7270 - en livrée béton, bien sûr! :) - mit INT 3980 (Latour-de-Carol - Paris Austerlitz) im schönsten Abendsonnenschein über den Viadukt rollte, während der Berghang zur rechten für ein geradezu dramatisches Schattenspiel sorgte. Kurz innehalten, an den Abstieg machen und unten am Fluss den Campingkocher anwerfen - Da schmeckte das Abendessen doch gleich doppelt gut! ;)
