Maruti Suzuki started a trend of small cars in INDIA with their Maruti 800.the 800 series created a big stir in the small car segment.
But overtime M&S thought to introduce something beyond 800.Larger in all aspects, more comfortable than the 800,efficient than the 800...

Maruti 800 in Budapest, Hungary.
The Maruti 800 was essentially a 2nd generation Suzuki Alto, produced by Maruti Suzuki, a company jointly owned by Suzuki and the Indian Government. From 1987, the Maruti was also exported to Eastern Europe and later Western Europe with Hungary actually being the first European country to get the Indian city car.
Likely to be 25-30 years old, yet it looked like it had been picked up from the showroom that morning; well, apart from the added lamps and horses head.
There wasn't a mark on it.

I do like these, working well as a pickup which you couldn't do with a regular SWB SJ. The colour obviously adds to this one.
Near the main ghat along the Ganges River in Varanasi, India.
When taking street portraits, I generally like to ask the names of my subjects, and in the best cases, if circumstances permit, to email them their photo or to even deliver a printed copy. In India, it was a different matter. Especially in Varanasi, due to the foreign nature of the setting and the language barrier, I mostly forgot that I had learned years before how to say "What is your name?" in Hindi. With this gentleman, however, who I saw for a second time the day after this photo was taken, I did manage to ask him his name.
In spite of his serious demeanor in this photo, he was actually quick to smile and laugh as a group of us were speaking. I think for this more formal photo, where he his presenting the teaching mudra, or gesture, he is wanting to display his genuine commitment to his spiritual path.

I had to get a snap of this. This is, I believe, a Japanese built Alto with the 796cc engine. These seemed to have disappeared from Suzuki dealers in the UK, leaving the curvy Swift 1.0 to fill the budget city car void.
A new Alto 1000cc, which looked like an evolution of this one, was sold from 1997 or thereabouts but they were the Indian built Maruti versions. A local Suzuki dealers were selling pre-registered versions of them for £2000 below list price at £5k.
Maruti 800 is a small city car that was manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India from 1983 to 18 January 2013. The first generation (SS80) was based on the 1979 Suzuki Fronte and had an 800 cc F8B engine, hence the moniker. Widely regarded as the most influential automobile in India, about 2.87 million 800s were produced during its course of which 2.66 million were sold in India itself.
With over 30 years of production, Maruti 800 remains the second longest production car in India, next only to Hindustan Ambassador.
