The Château de Marthon is a ruined castle in the commune of Marthon in the Charente département of France. Only the keep remains.
The Marthon family was descended from the Montbrons, grandchildren of the count of AngoulĂŞme, Audouin II. This seigneury existed from the 10th century.
During the Hundred Years' War, the lords of Marthon remained loyal to the king of France. On the night of 5/6 May 1347, the English surprised the castle and set it on fire, ravaging all of the castellanery.
The castle was built as a polygonal enceinte dominated by a square keep in the south-west corner. Its construction dates from the 12th or 13th centuries. Living accommodation was built against the north face of the tower. A turret has disappeared.
The castle had a Gothic chapel with two floors - the lower served as a shelter for pilgrims and the upper was reserved for the lord.
In 1960, the keep was reduced in height by a metre.
It has been listed since 1928 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture (Wikipedia).

This construction finished in the 16th century is "the old castle" with its towers crowned with machicolations and battlements, with its facades pierced with mullioned windows. In the 17th century, the old castle was enlarged perpendicularly with a lower, classical wing covered with a Mansard roof.

The history of Saint Jean de Cole is intertwined with that of the castle of La Marthonie and the priory , which was built in 1083 by Raynaud Thiviers , Bishop of Périgueux, on the banks of the Cole at the crossroads of routes leading Nontron Thiviers or Brantome. Well protected by Marthonie Castle , built at the same time, and initially sheltering sixteen canons regular following the rule of St. Augustine , the priory quickly radiates throughout the region and less than a century after its creation, its possessions s' extend to Limoges and Périgueux , while a prosperous village is born and develops around the priory.
In 1394 , the British ravaged and burned the castle and priory , whose land is devastated and scattered canons. Fortifying the village to guard against attacks , the English settled until 1404 .

The 55 was built by the DAF from 1967 until 1972. Styling of the car was by Michelotti. The Marthon version had a 1.3 litre engine from Renault and of course DAF's Variomatic transmission.
In this beautiful village is the Chateau de la Marthonie, which dates back to C12, but seen here to the right is C15, with the range to the left, built two hundred years later. The chateau's most noteable owner was Mondot de la Marthonie, who was counsellor to the queen mother of François I and who made the nearby chateau of Puyguilhem what we see today.

Visit Marthon (Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France)
Marthon is a village to the east of the Charente department between Angouleme and Nontron (Dordogne) on the quiet banks of the river Bandiat.
There are several small highlights to enjoy as you explore Marthon, as well as small architectural details such as a fountain, a well, an old stone archway, and some attractive houses.
The most important monument here, and the one that dominates the rooftops of Marthon, is the castle keep - the Donjon de Marthon (also called the Tour du Breuil).
Dating from the 12th century, it is now only the lower part of the original sturdy square tower that had three towers and a small section of wall that remains of the original castle but the donjon still dominates Marthon village.
You can reach the castle via the roman style chapel-doorway below the donjon - this is a tall building that combines a chapel on the upper storey and the gateway to the castle below and is built into the defensive walls around the castle.
Two other (more recent) castles can be seen at Marthon: the Chateau Neuf and the Chateau du Colombier, with both castles incorporating several different architectural styles. The Chateau Neuf dates from the 16th century, although it was much modified and extended in the 20th century, and the Chateau du Colombier is now a hotel.
Church of Saint-Martin
Another point of interest is the roman style Church of Saint-Martin. Note in particular the belltower with arched openings and the statue in a niche above the entrance. The unusual arches inset in the walls are called 'enfeu' and are tombs of local dignitaries that were originally buried in the church walls.

Today Saint-Jean-de-CĂ´le, a member of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" ("most beautiful villages of France"), has a population of only about 300. A castle existed here already since the 11th century, when nearby a priory was founded. This castle got ruined when English troops seized the village in 1394 and settled here for 11 years, before French troops forced them out.
The current castle was rebuilt from the end of the 15th century on, but suffered again, when in 1569 Saint-Jean-de-CĂ´le was pillaged by the Protestants during the wars of religion .
After the end of the war the castle got rebuilt again in a Renaissance style and a large wing was added in the 17rth century.
Seen here are the castle, the market hall and a part of the former convent´s church, now parish church.
