My second day in Alaska this last trip, my daughter took me for a very special bike ride. We rode those fat bikes, you know, the ones with those great big gnarly tires? And of course, the tires are studded for better traction.
Anyway, she took me to a place where marshmallows are grown. I know, right? I always figured the darn things came from some marshmallow factory somewhere. But they don't. They are grown, right here in this marshmallow field within the boundaries of the Far North Bicentennial Park. Only place in the world where they grow!
Who woulda guessed? If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it either. I know you're skeptical.
They develop slowly during the winter under many layers of very soft marshmallow cream that falls during the night and blankets the little baby marshmallows until spring and then they are harvested.
So there you have it. Now you all know where marshmallows really come from. Don't ya love Flickr? Learn something new every day

I believe this is a juvenile male snowy owl. I researched how to tell the difference between adult females and juvenile males because they can look similar. The juvenile males have a wide white bib and the barring is much smaller than the females. They also have lighter smaller bars on the tail and only up to three rows of bars on the tail.

“Althaea officinalis, known by its common name marshmallow (or marsh mallow), is a flowering plant in the mallow family that grows in wet, marshy environments.” The marshmallows you roast over the camp fire used to contain the sap from this plant and it is how the sweet confection got its name. Today there is no mallow sap used in marshmallows. All parts of the plant are edible. Some parts are used as herbal remedies for ulcers and respiratory ailments. The root contains a slimy sap that humans aren’t able to digest. When eaten, it passes through the digestive system and leaves behind a soothing coating, which aids in digestive problems. Even today the plant is used for a wide variety of medical ailments. The Romans considered the flowers a delicacy. The plant can grow three to five feet tall and once established reseeds itself every year.
