Turbines set to arrive at Marr wind farm site

Construction work on a new South Yorkshire wind farm is set to enter a new phase with the imminent arrival on site of the four turbines that will make up the scheme.

Banks Renewables, part of The Banks Group, is investing around £10m in the Marr wind farm near Doncaster, and has been undertaking preparatory work on the site, which sits to the west of junction 37 of the A1M, for the last six months.

The Marr wind farm will have an installed capacity of up to 12MW, and when fully operational, it will generate enough power to meet the energy requirements of up to 6,700 homes.

The turbines will be brought directly to the Marr site between 26 September and 14 October, with the exact date depending on the prevailing weather conditions.

They will travel up the A1(M) to junction 37, then along the A635 Barnsley Road towards Marr for around a mile before going onto the site, meaning their journey is not expected to cause any major disruption to local traffic.

A planned temporary road closure of the junction of the A635 with Hangmanstone Lane has also been arranged with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council between Monday 10 and Thursday 13 October to facilitate resurfacing work.

Each turbine will take up to three days to erect, and Banks is aiming to have the wind farm fully operational and connected to the National Grid early in the new year.

A community benefits fund will run alongside the wind farm when it is fully operational, and will provide support for local community groups, environmental and voluntary projects to help ensure the Marr wind farm provides a long-term positive impact on the area.

Mark Dowdall, environment and community director at the Banks Group, says: “This is a real milestone for the Marr project, and after undertaking a great deal of work to make the site ready for their arrival, we’re excited at the prospect of seeing the turbines in place.

“A liaison committee has been established for the site and we are continuing to work closely with local people during the construction of the wind farm.

“The transport route for the turbines’ arrival on site has been chosen to minimise any impact on traffic in the area, but we are obviously keen to make local people aware of what is scheduled to happen in order to reduce this likelihood even further.

“Banks is making a significant investment in creating this new wind farm, one that will not only go a long way towards meeting the area’s renewable energy generation targets, but which will also provide a positive long-term legacy through the community benefits fund that will be available when we start to generate power in just a few months time.

“Onshore wind farms such as Marr have a crucial role to play in helping to produce the energy we will consume in the foreseeable future, and Banks is proud to be at the forefront of the drive to produce more of this energy from renewable sources.”

He found fame with legendary Manchester band The Smiths, and now Johnny Marr’s outstanding achievements in a music career spanning four decades have been recognised with the granting of an honorary degree by the University of Salford.

Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects participated in the annual Community Park(ing) Day on September 20, 2013, along with several other local firms, at the MARRS building in midtown Sacramento. Park(ing) Day is a chance for participants to transform metered urban parking spots into temporary public parks. Our theme was Tiki Town complete with flamingos, AstroTurf, and various other Tiki paraphernalia. We chose to do an interactive park complete with carpet sample hopscotch, handmade triangle beanbag toss, and spontaneous limbo contests. The structures were constructed from cardboard and glue and included seating, park backdrop, and game configurations.

One of our group members, Chad Garcia, recounts his most memorable part of the day:

“Brian Crilly stopped strategically on the last hop of the hop scotch, his foot and arm raised up towards the stars (that weren’t out yet) as he ever so smoothly drained the 3 foot jumper into an extruded cardboard triangle, winning him a Justin Bieber "Rise to Fame" DVD. Brian of course was gracious enough to forgo the grand prize, in hopes that a young teenage girl or an awkward grown man would have the luxury of adding such a DVD to their Biebs collection. No one knows where the Justin Bieber DVD ended up, all we know is, it's in Chris Lovin's DVD player.”

Nicolette Gray writes of Bijou (Marr 1890), “These [Minister, Katherine] are succeeded by a group of small light types. Stephenson Blake's Charlemagne with a slight old-world touch, Caslon's Gutenberg with oriental dots in the middle of the bowls, and nicest of all Marr's art nouveau Bijou, all tight curls and neat diagonals and a very bright, black line.

This motive of smooth, solid black and complexes of precise, circular curls is used with a rather heavier touch in Marr's Ringlet and Caslon's portentous Caslon. In both the art is rather in the actual shapes invented than in the allusion.”¹

Bijou was designed and patented by Herman Ihlenburg in 1883. The rights were assigned to MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan; MSJ also showed it as Bijou. This letterpress typeface has been digitally archived for posterity.
