Mark Twain Paddlewheel Steamboat

Rivers of America

Disneyland Park

Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, CA

05-01-23

Photographed from Tom Sawyer Island in the middle of the lake as the riverboat makes a turn.

From Wikipedia:

"Mark Twain riverboat burns biodiesel fuel in its boiler, heating water into steam, which is routed to two pistons that turn the paddlewheel. Spent exhaust is then routed back to the boiler. The riverboat is guided through the Rivers of America via an I-beam track, which is hidden beneath the green and brown dyed water."

After a busy day, the Mark Twain gets a well deserved rest in her home on the Rivers of America.

Vessels Columbia & Mark Twain.

Disneyland , theme park, Anaheim, California, USA

The Sailing Ship Columbia, located at the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California, is a full-scale replica of Columbia Rediviva, the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe. The Columbia has operated in the park for more than fifty years. Passengers of the ship take a 12-minute trip around the Rivers of America.

The first was the Mark Twain Riverboat, located at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California, on which passengers embark on a scenic, 12-minute journey around the Rivers of America. Originally named Mark Twain Steamboat when the park opened in 1955, the stately, 5/8-scale stern-wheeler was the first functional steamboat to be built in the United States for 50 years

The fireworks might be over, but the magic and memories will probably last a lifetime.

Here we see the Mark Twain docked at Fowler's Inn, where it has rented a room for the next year during the river re-routing.

Edit: Thank you for Explore, everyone!

It's not often that the Rivers of America are so still, with nary a duck moving around.

It's a quiet night along the banks of the Rivers of America.

It was a very quiet and wonderful night of shooting for Gregg Cooper, Bill McIntosh and myself as we had New Orleans Square virtually to ourselves for almost an hour last week.

Took this shot from the Mark Twain Riverboat. The sun rays are beaming down in front of the cave on the Splash Mountain attraction (after the final fall and big splash!).

Location: Disneyland - Anaheim, California. Along the Rivers of America.

A special photo I took for the last day of the operation of the Rivers of America before its temporary closure.

I haven't done an actual Disneyland Photo of the Day for a while, so here we go.

After giving up on getting any decent color out of the sunrise at Sleeping Beauty Castle I decided to give the sun a second chance. Tired but not discouraged I headed over to the Rivers of America area with fingers crossed and tripod in hand. At first it seemed like I was going to be out of luck, but then the clouds began to move and the sky started to light up. Watching the Sunrise over the Rivers of American ended up being my favorite part of Disneyland's 24 hour Diamond Anniversary event.

Quite night at the Mark Twain Riverboat.

Sunrise during the Disneyland 24 Hour Diamond Anniversary Event brought with it one more photo opp at the Rivers of America.

After a long day of ferrying guests on the Rivers of America, the Mark Twain settles in for a well deserved rest.

Having a bit of fun with a photo I took of the Mark Twain Riverboat.

Thanks to my daughter Marissa (MarissaSarre on Flickr) for the quick tutorial on Corel Paint Shop Pro! I'm learning!

The Mark Twain Riverboat on the Rivers of America in Disneyland. Another shot from my files. I can't wait to get back to Disney World in a few months.

Mark Twain Riverboat is an authentic paddlewheel riverboat built at a shipyard in San Pedro, California, specifically for Disneyland. Tour the Rivers of America with narration by a grizzled old river pilot with plenty of stories to tell. When Fantasmic! is running, it plays an important role in that show during the evening, but otherwise a nighttime ride can be a great cap to a day at Disneyland.

Playing around with the Canon 16-35 F/2.8 lens and seeing what kind of lens flares it would produce.

With the coming of Star Wars Land, I fear we shan't be having any river excursions for some time. Here's to the beautiful Rivers of America!

The Mark Twain Riverboat sits idle, yet she still glows at night awaiting the day when she can churn up the muddy waters of the Rivers of America once again.

I finally had the chance at getting fireworks shots. Weird that it took this long to try. Not the greatest, but I know what I need to work on. Let me know your thoughts.

A little different perspective here on the Mark Twain Riverboat. We were boarded on the Sailing Ship Columbia making our way around the Rivers of America when I got wind of the steamboat on our tail.

Disneyland's Rivers of America in Frontierland.

The Mark Twain was christened by actress Irene Dunne (Magnolia Hawks in the 1936 movie "Showboat") on Disneyland's Opening Day.

Walt Disney and his wife celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary aboard the Mark Twain four days before Disneyland opened in 1955.

Hooray phirework phriday! This is the only firework shot I've ever taken! I rather like how it came out. I'd like to once again thank c-lemon for this shot's existence as she's the one who convinced me to take a crack at the fireworks!

I've been wanting this shot for forever, and about a month ago, the sunset decided to cooperate and give me this. It was worth the wait.

There is nothing like walking around Disneyland after closing. No noise. No Strollers. Nobody coming to a dead stop in the middle of a crowded walkway. Two hours earlier the water was choppy and there were people everywhere. Now it's just me, my tripod and the Riverboat's Reflection.

There were no pyrotechnics necessary for the magnificent display we had in the sky at Disneyland on Wednesday.

Bill McIntosh and I only had about 15 minutes to run around like kids in a candy store (or photo junkies in a crack house for Bill) trying to get as many rainbow and sunset sky shots as we could. Thanks to Mother Nature, we had all the ooh's and ahh's we needed.

Sitting lakeside at the Hungry Bear Restaurant, I could not help notice the vantage point I was given in seeing the Disneyland Canoe and Mark Twain arrive side by side.

It's my birthday! 23 promises to be an exciting year, and I have many goals I've set for myself. I won't list them here, but I can only hope I have as much determination and focus as Tiana.

Tiana is such an underrated princess and I truly love her film! When I got to meet her on the Mark Twain Riverboat (another favorite) last May, I just about died from excitemnt.

Those that get the privilege to pilot the Mark Twain will be able to sign the Guest Book. In addition, you receive an official certificate that you "Captained" the ship!

Yes, my title is an Adele song. It's funny cause he has friends from the other side... get it? Yeah?? Alright, moving on...

So now that the Rivers of America is under construction, Disneyland has decided to dock the Mark Twain Riverboat. This is awesome for many reasons, one of them being that lots of unique characters from The Princess and the Frog are now doing meet and greets on the boat. I had never met Dr. Facilier before Saturday, so when I was waltzing through Frontierland and spotted him, you better believe I dashed to the Mark Twain.

Of all the photos I took, this candid one was my favorite. Something about it just seems... shady to me. And he is the shadow man, so I think it fits.

As I waited for the Mark Twain to return from her cruise on the Rivers of America, I forced myself to take in and appreciate the docking area of both the Mark Twain and the Columbia. Many times we don't slow down and appreciate the attention to detail and the little touches that the Imagineers put in everything that surrounds us at the park. As I studied the dock, I noticed that a crate had the name Francis H. McQuinn - Entrepreneur written on it. Who was Francis and what if any Disney affiliation did this person have that this name would be etched here? Knowing that nothing happens by chance at Disney, I told myself I will have to google this and see what comes up. Anyway, I realized that the crowd was beginning to grow and soon the Mark Twain would be upon us, meaning that the tranquility of the dock would soon come to an end. I quickly took a 7 shot bracket at 1/3 EV knowing that this will punch up the sky and bring out the tree line. Here's the final outcome and by the way, I did google Francis H. McQuinn and not much came up. Hmm, I guess for now, I will continue to wonder...

The Rivers of America can offer some pretty spiffy fireworks shots, provided you've got the time! I missed the shots of BTMRR all lit up, so unfortunately, these only feature the Mark Twain and "Remember, Dreams Come True."

Ready for good night sleep, here is a view of the Mark Twain Riverboat from New Orleans Square looking into Frontierland.
