The Sometimes Struggle
Artist’s Statement
One day I awoke and found myself in unfortunate circumstances; I was the father of two teenagers. Long gone were the days of happy, smiling kids replaced by glum looks and one syllable grunts. Books I had read and seminars I had attended about raising teenagers made teenagers sound horrible. I had not been like that as a teenager; surely my children would not be like that. Oh, but they were.
Looking around, I saw that I was not alone. The faces and the body language of parents and their teens told their stories; arguments between parents and teens, once tight relationships now strained, teens wanting more freedom than they were prepared for, parents holding on too tightly. Of course, it was not all confrontational, in fact, most of it was not. There were smiling teens and parents together, shared laughter, and Kodak moments. There were serious times; too, with teens worried about their future and parents worried about the future they were leaving to their children.
In this series I explore some of the non-Kodak moments in the teenager and parent relationship. Ori Gersht's Cypresses series, in particular the photograph Mark 01, inspired me to symbolically capture the sometimes struggle between parent and teenager using form and color rather than traditional portraiture.
