Norfolk Hawker - Anaciaeschna isoceles (F)

Habitat

The optimum conditions for breeding appear to be unspoilt grazing marsh dyke systems with clean, non-saline water, rushy margins, preferably with an abundance of water soldier as well as other aquatic plants.

Threats

Conversion of grazing marsh to arable farming.

Inappropriate ditch management.

Nutrients enrichment.

Pollution.

The impact of global climate change and fluctuations in water levels.

Status & Distribution

The Norfolk Hawker is currently restricted to the fens and grazing marshes that are relatively isolated from polluted water in the Broadlands of Norfolk and Northeast Suffolk. A Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) for the Norfolk Hawker has been drafted for Norfolk.

Norfolk Hawker Management Profile

General management principles include maintaining grazing marshes, controlling saline intrusion, controlling nutrient enrichment. There are also best practice guidelines for managing inhabited sites, particularly the dyke vegetation and the surrounding terrestrial habitats.

Case Study

Work is underway to restore habitats for this species in Norfolk.

This wonderful morning was just before last Christmas and the sun only rises in this place in December , worth getting up for! This will be my last reflection image for a while dont want you all to get fed up with this type of photo!

The top half is the original and the rest is obviously photoshopped but I feel that this is more the direction that I am heading for, making my photography more of an art form than just a straightforward image, some of you may not care for this type of vision but please let me know what you think?

The fuchsias are most closely related to the northern hemisphere genus Circaea. Fuchsia is a genus of flowering plants that consists mostly of shrubs or small trees. Almost 110 species of Fuchsia are recognized; the vast majority are native to South America, but a few occur north through Central America to Mexico, and also several from New Zealand to Tahiti. Fuchsia leaves are opposite or in whorls of three to five, simple lanceolate, and usually have serrated margins (entire in some species), 1–25 cm long, and can be either deciduous or evergreen, depending on the species. The flowers are very decorative; they have a pendulous teardrop shape and are displayed in profusion throughout the summer and autumn, and all year in tropical species. They have four long, slender sepals and four shorter, broader petals; in many species, the sepals are bright red and the petals purple (colours that attract the hummingbirds that pollinate them), but the colours can vary from white to dark red, purple-blue, and orange. A few have yellowish tones. 12279

I can't add much to the title -- an orange rose with pink edges on the petals.

Thank you for looking! Isn't God a great artist?

Hopefully I have identified this correctly - butterflies are not my specialty but when I was researching it, that one looked the closest.

I took this photo on my hike at Granite Creek last weekend. The butterfly was very kind to pose on the fern long enough for me to get my camera out since I was standing on a rock in the middle of a stream crossing!

One of two clear-winged Ulidiids in Britain (the other is Ulidia erythrophthalma). Physiphora alceae usually has a metallic-green thorax, concave face profile and pale fore tarsi. The eyes can appear green and purple-banded in live specimens.

Similar - Ulidia erythrophthalma. The antennae of U. erythrophthalma are recessed into large pits.

May be identifiable from good close up images but best to examine the specimen closely.

Habitat - Well vegetated field margins and dung heaps.

Adults can be recorded from May until September.

The larvae develop in decaying plant material such as silage, clover fodder and rotting bulbs. It also seems to breed in dung, perhaps especially manure heaps in fields (around which it can be noticeably numerous).

Widespread in southern England north to the Sheffield area.

On winter’s margin, see the small birds now with half-forged memories come flocking home to gardens famous for their charity.

The green globe’s broken; vines like tangled veins hang at the entrance to the silent wood.

With half a loaf, I am the prince of crumbs;

By snow’s down, the birds amassed will sing like children for their sire to walk abroad!

But what I love, is the gray stubborn hawk who floats alone beyond the frozen vines;

And what I dream of are the patient deer who stand on legs like reeds and drink that wind; -

They are what saves the world: who choose to grow thin to a starting point beyond this squalor. - Mary Oliver

This margined calligrapher is a miniature fly, feeding here on the pollen from a bloodroot blossom. Those delightful decorations on its abdomen look like they've been drawn on by a calligrapher. That black spot at the back is diagnostic for this species. Females have a space between their eyes at the top - males eyes would touch. Their larvae eat harmful plant pests like aphids and thrips.

The rusty-margined flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatchers.

It is found in northern and central South America in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela; also eastern Panama. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and heavily degraded former forest. The Rusty-margined Flycatcher is found at forest edge and in woody second growth.

The Rusty-margined Flycatcher is found at the forest edge and in woody second growth. The bird is considered IUCN Least Concern.

More retiring and less vocal than the Social Flycatcher, the Rusty-margined Flycatcher often perches in open areas hawking insects or sallying to the ground to forage. The seasonal movements of the Rusty-margined Flycatcher are not well known, but some relative abundance of some in northern Sound America is reported to fluctuate seasonally. - from Wikipedia.

As the swan approached to the margin of the water, I thought it perhaps had designs on our picnic lunch. (A woman on the seat next to us beat a hasty retreat.)

But the swan soon resumed its preening, which it had started in the water, and finally was energetically removing, with its beak, tiny feathers which fluttered down to the pebbly shore.

A few days ago I posted a black blister beetle photo, and that species was solid black. This margined blister beetle has a light gray margin around its elytra. Both blister beetle species lay their eggs near grasshopper egg pods and the larvae eat the grasshopper eggs upon hatching. Margined blister beetle larvae spend the winter frozen in the soil before thawing out in springtime when they pupate and then emerge as adults now when grasshopper eggs are abundant in the soil. This margined blister beetle would be bad news to bother and pick up as your skin would quickly be burned by a potent fluid filled with chemicals that cause blisters. This hungry adult is likely hoping to finds some virgin's bower flowers to feed on.
