Rio Preguiças (Preguiças river), Barreirinhas, MA

Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses is located in Maranhao State; a roughly 600 sq mile area. Although it looks like a desert, it isn't as there over 40 inches of rain per year here. On the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, a combination of river flows, blowing wind and rain results in formations as seen in this photo. During the rainy season, there can be masses of very small lakes among the dunes. In the dry season, mostly large bodies of water are present. In the Grandes Lencois area the sand dunes appear very white during the day but during sunset they take on a more orange color because of the evening sun. In the Pequenos Lencois area, the sands naturally look more orange/brown (at least to me).

Raposa Beach, Maranhão, Brazil

From iNaturalist:

The planalto slaty antshrike is endemic to brazil. It is found in central and eastern Brazil in a wide swath from eastern Maranhão, Ceará, and Paraíba southwest to northern Mato Grosso do Sul, extreme northern Paraná, and western São Paulo. In the northern part of its range it mostly inhabits deciduous and semi-deciduous forest, especially areas heavy with vines. In the southern and western parts it is mainly a bird of gallery forest. It also occurs locally in the edges of evergreen forest. In most of its range it occurs between 400 and 800 m (1,300 and 2,600 ft) of elevation and reaches 1,100 m (3,600 ft) in the central part. In all forest types it mainly keeps to the understorey to mid-storey.

The planalto slaty antshrike's diet has not been detailed but is mostly insects and other arthropods. It usually forages singly, in pairs, or in small family groups, mostly between 1 and 5 m (3 and 16 ft) of the ground though sometimes as high as 15 m (49 ft). In general it feeds higher in areas with many vines than in other sites. It hops through vegetation, gleaning prey while reaching and lunging from a perch; it also makes short upward sallies and takes prey from the top of leaf litter on the ground. It takes prey from leaves, branches, and vines. It frequently joins mixed-species feeding flocks and has been observed following army ant swarms.

São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil

This is a unique place, a desert with very fine white sand and sweet water lagoons formed with rain water. The dunes can reach over 40m high. It is located on the coast of the state of Maranhão, north of Brazil.

My travel in Brazil (Maranhao) (July 2010)

"The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses) is located in Maranhão state, in northeastern Brazil, just east of the Baía de São José, between 02º19’—02º45’ S and 42º44’—43º29’ W. It is an area of low, flat, occasionally flooded land, overlaid with large, discrete sand dunes. It encompasses roughly 1000 square kilometers, and despite abundant rain, supports almost no vegetation."

ENGLISH:

I've chosen my best photos of Maranhão trip and published them in Maranhão, images of a Brazilian paradise, a visual recollection of the state of Maranhão, from the crumbling buildings of its capital, São Luís to the mesmerizing and unique landscapes of the Lençóis Maranhenses, through the fascinating celebration of the bumba-meu-boi festival .

This photo was taken in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, located in Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. It shows a shallow lagoon bordered by light-colored sand dunes under a clear sky with scattered clouds. The water reflects the sky, creating a visual contrast between the arid terrain and the temporary freshwater body. Sparse vegetation grows around the lagoon, indicating recent rainfall. This landscape is typical of the park’s seasonal cycle, where rainwater accumulates between dunes during the wet season, forming thousands of ephemeral lagoons. The area is part of a protected zone known for its unique combination of desert-like dunes and freshwater ecosystems.
