December 27, 2018 - "The Madaba Map is the oldest extant map of the Holy Land and is dated to the middle of the 6th century AD. It was discovered in the 19th century, during an excavation and reconstruction of a mosaic floor in St George’s Church in Madaba, Jordan. The mosaic map was created according to the Old and New Testaments by Greek monk Salmanos. The map represents biblical sites: Jordan river and mount Nebo in Jordan; Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho – on the Western bank of Jordan River in Palestine and Israel, Delta Nile and Sinai desert in Egypt.
Jerusalem is the biggest city on the map. The map depicts some famous Old City structures such as the Damascus Gate, St. Steven’s Gate, the Golden Gate, the gate leading to Mount Zion, the Citadel (Tower of David), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Cardo Maximus.Jerusalem is the biggest city on the map. The mosaic Map of Madaba was discovered in 1896 by chance. This discovery drew the city to the attention of scholars worldwide. Nowadays, Saint George’s Church became one of the most visited tourist sites in Jordan. Pilgrims from all around the world come to Madaba to see the original mosaic floor.
Greek - Orthodox St. George's Church is active and used for church services. During the service the mosaic map is covered by carpet." Previous text is from the following website: saintgeorgechurch.blogspot.com/2014/03/mosaic-map-of-mada...

Rome 2011: Wall Map of Ancient Rome
This map is the first in a several of four (or five) maps that appear on a wall. Each map highlights Roman territory at specific points in time.
This map is located somewhere between the Colosseum and Capitoline Museum, quite possibly on Via dei Fori Imperiali.

I stole this idea from something I saw on Flickr. But I'm not selling them, so maybe it's Okay? I give credit though: (Much better than the ones I made.) I used an outdated Maryland map.

Here, the high school teacher extended the project to include topographical markings!
Young children often have a difficult time in understanding "bird's eye perspective" and how maps "work." I have found that if students "make" their own landscape in a box (usually using modeling clay of some sort and paint it) and include typical features such as a hill/mountain, a body of water, land, and some buildings (step 1), then do an overhead tracing with marker on a transparent material (step 2) of their landscape (the "satellite image"), make a paper copy in a copier (there's the map!) (step 3) color it and make a key (step 4) they have a much better sense of maps - they "own" this one!

BITH'S JUKEBOX #226
EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL "ONE PLACE"
Drop a coin in the slot :
"Summer evening, I walk past the windows baby crying, someone's cooking dinner
There's laughter on the TV, someone's learning the violin
How at home, it heals at times like this,
I feel I would like to live like anybody else in one place
I could be happy and fulfilled in one place
So I get the map out (get the map out) I draw a line of where we've been
(goes through sea and sky) it goes through sea and sky
Twenty-five planes this year and it's only July
This is not some Bible, like on the road, oh no it's just a song about coming home
and whether I could live like anybody else in one place
I could be happy and fulfilled In one place
You know that I have found I'm happiest weaving from town to town
and you know, Bruce said "We should keep moving 'round"
Maybe, we all get too tied down, I don't know hell, I don't know
Happy to be home (still alive) happy to be home (alright)
In the end, if you take care, you can be happy or unhappy anywhere
I think we maybe all rely too much dreamin' on one place
I know I never would deny the need for one place
I think we maybe all rely too much baby on one place
I know I never would deny the need for one place
For one place (for one place, baby) one place (one place, baby) oh yeah
It goes through sea and sky (it goes through sea and sky) one place, one place (goes through sea and sky)
I'm happy to be home (still I'm happy to be home) happy to be home (oh, still I'm happy to be home)
Goes through sea and sky (sea and sky) (it goes through sea and sky)
Get the map out (get the map out) won't you, baby? (get the map out) oh yeah (get the map out)
Get the map out, oh yeah, baby (twenty-five planes this year) get the map out, it's alright
(after all, twenty-five planes this year)
C'mon get the map out (oh yeah) get the map out (oh yeah) c'mon, get the map out I said, get the map out"
This map represents the accumulation of data gathered during overflights on March 9th, 2012. Therefore it shows not a permanent situation but a moment in time.
The data gathered has been filtered for grid noise and simulator crossing anomalies, which, when compared to other research flight results, were not significantly different.
The phenomena measured show up as clouds of dark spots. These are areas of heightened energetic activity which could lead to inexplicable events and / or observations on the ground. Of note is the large, almost triangular formation in Rodeo, around Phyneas Jack's Lookout (marked +PL). Data seems to indicate an interaction between the points of the triangle. Unclear is how and why this occurs.
The phenomena measured in Cowell and between Rodeo and Stinson are different in nature: there is no interaction, but the energy is more likely to interfere with life in the region due to it's frequency being more in tune with that of the grid itself.
We recommend further investigation of the measured phenomena, with precedence given to the areas in Cowell and between Rodeo and Stinson, as these immediately affect the public safety.
Maps are located in the Map Room, just west of the Archives' Reference Room. Map cases hold maps sorted by geographic location or call number.

I've posted maps of this before, but this set has the exits, not just the general route. Alternative A would have run just north of Ashby for most of the length.

September 1965 - After landing by LST in Vung Tau, at some point later that afternoon, we were loaded on C130’s for the short flight to Ton Son Nhut airport in Saigonx – of course we had no idea what was going on or where we were going.
Our C130 was accelerating down the runway for takeoff when all of a sudden we were thrown forward then jerked back as the pilot slammed on the brakes and reversed the props. We later learned that the VC were in the area shooting at the planes as they took off.
We finally got airborne later that afternoon and landed in Saigon as night started to fall. We were loaded on deuce and half’s and trucked though Siagon to some unknown destination. We ended up in Cholon, the Chinese section of Saigon – the area on the lower left corner of the Saigon map above the word 'Caravelle'.
We were unloaded in front of a huge building that we found out later was rice warehouse. It was full of beds that housed a couple hundred guys. This would be our home for the next couple of weeks.
After a couple of weeks, our Company Commander got us together to tell us we were moving out the next day. He had volunteered our company to go about 25 miles north of Saigon to set up in a former Michelin rubber tree plantation in an area known as Long Binh.
We loaded onto deuce and half’s again and headed north on Highway 1. We pulled into an area that had been gouged out by the Engineers that was surrounded by three strings of concertina, graded landscape that had started to go back to jungle and the standard ten men tents with metal floors.
First order of business – build a complex of area trenches and sandbag trenches around the tents.
