In front of the plant is an inscription of the sung song.It says, "The morning glories that Okura Yamanoue wrote were probably bellflowers." The faint memory that taught me this came back to me at the same time as the face of the teacher who had just graduated from university.
The Manyo Botanical Garden was unexpectedly interesting. This botanical garden collects plants mentioned in Japan's oldest collection of waka poems. As a result, we were able to see the appearance of Japan's endemic plants before selective breeding.
Excerpt from the plaque:
Muronoki Song Monument
In 730, Otomo-no-Tabito, who ended his term of office in Dazaifu (Kyushu), stopped off in Tomo-no-Ura. It was then that he composed the sone “Manyo-shuka” dedicated to his beloved wife. One could imagine tabito’s grief while composing this song.
“My beloved. The Muronoki in Tomonoura is here. But you are not here to see it.”
