R.E.M. - Man On The Moon (1992)

A technological achievement not yet equaled in my humble opinion.

A moment when many young person's imagination ran wild, I know mine did.

Along with a few other things just prior to my teen years. :0)

Among the reasons I chose the career I did & the wonderful hobby of amateur radio.

Friday August 31st was the day of the Memorial Service for Neil Armstrong

It also happened to coincide with a Blue Moon!

Quite a special event on both accounts really...

And something I was hoping to be able to capture and pay tribute to for 'Music Monday'...

'Armstrong' family suggested paying tribute to him by looking at the Moon and giving him a wink.'

The above images were all taken on Friday night out our window...

With the Moon trying it's best to peek down between the clouds...

The bottom shot in the middle with the clouds below the Moon reminded me of an Angel...

So maybe Mr Armstrong was looking back down on us too!!!

This is for all my dear Flickr Friends who share my love and fascination of the Moon...

May it continue to keep us close and connected!!!

Have a wonderful week! %-)

REM - Man on the Moon

Chris Isaak - Blue Moon

What I'm assuming to be an earlier Craig Kavafes work for Grumman, depicting the LEM and exploring Astronaut on the lunar surface. The 2/64 date is likely associated with an earlier LEM variant depicted in the same scene. Note the hinged/articulating ladder...possibly a 1965 update/revision.

“EN ROUTE TO THE MOON – WITHIN 25 YEARS: Here are the three moon ships in which a 50-man expedition of scientists will reach the moon in 1977, according to Dr. Wernher von Braun, world’s leading rocket expert, writing in Collier’s. The huge rocket ships—each higher than the Statue of Liberty—are en route to the moon from a space station erected years before in an orbit 1,075 miles above the earth. Trip will take five days. Only the two passenger rocket ships (upper left and on right) will carry sufficient fuel for the return trip from the moon to the space station’s orbit. The third vehicle (lower left) is the cargo ship carrying only enough fuel for the 240,00-mile moon trip and for landing. Aboard it will be supplies and equipment for a six-week stay on the lunar surface, and a lunar prefabricated base.”

Robert T. McCall ( 1983 ) , from of Science Digest magazine, october 1983. WIKIPEDIA INFO: Robert McCall (December 23, 1919 – February 26, 2010) was a conceptual artist, known particularly for his works of space art. McCall was an illustrator for Life magazine in the 1960s, created promotional artwork for Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey and Richard Fleischer's production Tora! Tora! Tora! and worked as an artist for NASA, documenting the history of the Space Race. McCall was also production illustrator on Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The character Commander William Riker expressed admiration for the work of "Bob McCall" in one episode of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.

McCall's work can be found on U.S. postage stamps, NASA mission patches, and his murals grace the walls of the National Air and Space Museum, the National Gallery of Art, The Pentagon, Epcot, and Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

McCall died in 2010 of heart failure in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Although one of many beautiful and diverse works by Russ Arasmith, I’m mildly amused by the nice, yet odd choice of “attention to detail” in this. That being the conspicuously detailed Oxygen Purge System (OPS) Actuator, indicated by the yellow arrow in this 1971 photo of David Scott during EVA training:

However, the thing it’s attached to, the Remote Control Unit (RCU), on the Astronaut’s chest, is devoid of any detail.

The Apollo spacecraft that carried three men to the moon is expanded to a four-man cargo craft for use until the space station/shuttle becomes operational, in this concept by North American Rockwell's Space Division, Downey, Calif. The Command/Service Module would require minor modifications and could serve the space program as a space tug/cargo module, for long duration Earth or lunar missions.

You have before you Apollo 17, with the last moon rocket (Saturn-5). It is 1h00 a.m. EST. The rocket has just been released from the great tower of technical service(The roll-back of the Mobile Service Structure). This tower was transported by the crawler-platform transporter vehicule has the size of a football field. Right now, we hear a loud noise of this Crawler vehicule. Many working on the launch pad. This is a moment of science fiction. That is a reality and it's very impressive. Dan Beaumont report. One of aerospace artist Bob McCall's last works was a portrait of Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong. Called "The Real Right Stuff," the painting depicts Armstrong during his early NASA career when he was an X-15 research pilot at NASA's Flight Research Center, now the Dryden Flight Research Center. The painting was unveiled at NASA Dryden in November 2009. Insane set. This is the negi band to watch this year without fail.

At the bottom of the ladder, Neil Armstrong said "I'm going to step off the LEM now" (referring to the Apollo Lunar Module). He then turned and set his left boot on the surface and spoke the words "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." The stamp captures that moment.

Note that the RCS plume deflectors are included in this beautiful depiction. However, an RCS Quad 3 nozzle (specifically, A3R), seems to be missing. I probably should overlook it, seeing how it otherwise looks pretty darned good.

Amusing depiction of Apollo 11's flight profile, exemplified by the polar projection perspective of earth. Rarely seen, especially for something like this.

No offense to Mr. Tobey; however, it’s not the crew portrait I would've chosen...but, what do I know. Certainly flattering to the crew, especially Neil...he doesn’t look a day over his Gemini 8-period ‘self’...

'Blue Moon Friday' - August 31st2012

R.I.P Neil Armstrong - August 25th 2012

I know I'm a little late late on getting this one uploaded...

But I wanted to put together a tribute to acknowledge the passing of Neil Armstrong.

A household name and Father to an incredible moment in history...

The first Man to step foot on the Moon!!! %-)

I was 3 years old when it happened, so way too little to have experienced the event first hand!

But can appreciate the incredible impact and affect it had on the world at the time...

Watching and listening with eager excitement and fascination!

An iconic moment in history! %-)

Like many of us... I love the moon... love looking up at it in the sky... love watching it's changing moods form and shape over the course of the month and love to photograph it whenever I can... especially when it's full. It often makes me think of my dear family and friends around the world, potentially looking up at the same time too. (Sometimes with me prompting them with a txt message! HaHa!) I love the idea that wherever we are in the world, we can look up at the moon and be connected.%-)

So I have fished out a few old images above from the archives taken over the past couple of years..

It is also an appropriate coincidence that we are cuirrently experiencing a 'Blue Moon' in our skies...

As noted here... Blue moon: A cosmic wink at Neil Armstrong memorial service

And here... Blue Moon and Neil Armstrong Converge

I was fortunate enough to capture it's golden glow in the early hours of this morning...

Just as it was about to slip below the horizon to make it's appearance to the northern Hemisphere!

And again this evening peaking through the hazy clouds... %-)

Will have a look through the shots tomorrow to see if I've managed to get a good one to share...

I've been wondering if any of my Flickr friends have been looking up at the Moon with me...? %-)

On the 25th of November, Jashan-e-Riaz (Day of Lord Ra Riaz) will be celebrated around the world! This day marks the advent of His Divine Eminence Ra Riaz Gohar Shahi, the spiritual guide of Younus AlGohar. It is a truly auspicious date in human history!

Congratulations to admirers of HDE Gohar Shahi on this beautiful occasion! During this special celebration, humanity is invited to experience the limitless bounty and benevolence of HDE Gohar Shahi.

May the blessings of this momentous day fall upon you, and may you be brought ever closer to the Lord!

“Wonders of the Universe:

Scientists ‘Tailoring…?’

Within the next 12 months, either a Project Mercury astronaut or his Russian counterpart will be orbiting the earth. Yet, even at this late date, no suitable space suit has been developed which would permit the astronaut to move freely into the hostile environment of space outside the satellite or around on the lunar surface.

While in the past, the problem of designing an acceptable space suit was not considered difficult, as the time approaches when the suit should become operational it no longer appears an easy task. To point up the difficulty of this problem, at least three companies are engaged actively in trying to design a suit to cope with space conditions.”

At this point, unfortunately, the verso-affixed newspaper caption was cut off…drats. I would’ve loved to have read the rest of it! I I wish there was a repository of Dr. Levitt’s “Wonders of the Universe” articles. If there is, I haven’t found it.

There are too many wonderful, quirky, clever, questionable, amusing, implausible, etc., etc. things going on here to enumerate. By John Gorsuch…’nuff said. Enjoy.

KSC INFO: This American Flag heralds the flight of Apollo 11, man's first lunar landing mission. This double exposure was made with a 1000 mm lens. The photograph was taken from Cape Kennedy, adjacent to Kennedy Space Center, where Apollo 11 lifted off from pad-39a at 9h32 a.m. EDT. This image was imposed upon the image of the flag, filmed a day earlier. In the double exposure the rocket is at an altitude of about 5,000 feet. A band of super-cold propellants seems to circle the rocket near its center. The effect is caused by the difference in temperature between the propellants and the atmosphere. FOR RELEASE: July 16, 1969. 4X5 TRANSPARENCY NASA PHOTO, 69-HC-765, US GOVERNMENT PUBLICATION, SCAN AND REMASTERED by Dan Beaumont , ACQUISITION: NASA headquarters Washington D.C. July 5, 1976.

Yet another wonderful artists’ concept of an early LEM/CSM design (ca. 1962), depicting LEM ascent stage jettison. The shading, dramatic lunar terrain and overall attention to detail are impressive.
