If You Believe They Put a Man on the Moon. This is a photo of Stone Mountain North Carolina which looks a view of the moons surface,
July 2009 is the 40th Anniversary of the Moon landing (20th July 1969) when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first walked on the Moon – I watched on TV when I was a boy and was inspired by the Apollo program to become a scientist.
Saturday 4th July 2009 (American Independence Day) Buzz Aldrin was speaking at the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. I was unable to get tickets as it was a sell-out.
However, at the same time (because of the Moon’s gravity) the tide was going out - so I took my sons to the “beach” on the South Bank and we created a “Man on the Moon” tribute.

This is an very old and very well conserved picture of a married couple , portrayed around 100 years ago .
These people raised my mother and gave her a pleasant and secure childhood in the city of The Hague in the Netherlands .
The names and data of the man and the woman who are - slightly majestic in the 'old fashioned way' - portrayed here are :
MARIE CORNELIA ANNA VAN DRONGELEN (callname : Marie) ; she was the daughter of Jacobus Lodewijk van Drongelen and Marie Keijzer /
JOHANNES PAULUS LOKKERBOL (callname : Jan) ; he was the son of Paulus Leenderd Lokkerbol and of Christina de Jong ; he had been formerly married to Rosalie Eugenie Anastasie Mulder .
Jan Lokkerbol was born on march 15 1872 in The Hague and he passed away in the year 1944 in a small place named Groessen in the eastern part of the country .
His wife , Marie van Drongelen , was born on march 28 1883 in The Hague in the morning at about half past six , as we once read in her certificate of birth ; Marie finally died on august 23 1976 in The Hague , at the privileged age of 93.
I personally never had the chance to get to know my 'grandfather' , since he already died 16 years before I was born , but I díd have the opportunity of getting to know my 'grandmother' , rather well even , and that's why I can still vividly remember her reaction to the sensational news of the landing of the first man on the moon in the summer of 1969 - at the time my grandmother already was an elderly woman of 86 .
My grandmother couldn't , no really refused (!) to accept - and not even from an acquaintance who , coincidentally , had been living in Houston , USA , the place of the flight-control centre of the Apollo-project - that such a fully improbable event as 'a man walking on the moon' could have taken place in reality .....
"Only in the stories of Jules Verne , but nót in reality , that's for sure !" , may have been the comment of my grandmother to this staggering news - my grandmother was already stricken in years , and had been raised and had been living in her younger years in a completely different world of course (the one of the towboat !) - and so she kept on persisting in her refusal to believe the fully incomprehensible ...........
Pierre-Paul Beaumont photo. "The last man on the moon mission": I met during the Apollo 17 mission, many journalists who covered the events of the NASA, since Mercury program and they told me that the launch of Apollo 17 was the most impressive event they saw their lives. Anyone who witnessed the launch of Apollo 17, can not forget. NASA was for me, very collaborative and available to access all the site visits and information and meetings. Happy 40th Birthday to Apollo 17 and NASA. It was a wonderful time in emotions. Dan Beaumont, danbeaumont@videotron.ca, (Dan Beaumont Space Museum on You Tube). www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yIvOYFOm6c

August 25, 2012: RIP Neil Armstrong.

Note: Originally posted July 20, 2009.
Was it really 40 years ago that Apollo 11 landed on the Sea of Tranquillity, and man first walked on the moon? I know I am not the only person asking myself that question today.
I was 17 and looking forward to beginning my senior year in high school. I had my own car, and had just purchased my first television set that I kept in my room (which was painted black and decorated with posters that glowed under black light). Life was good.
Most of my friends and I knew this date - July 20, 1969 - was one that we would always remember. After dinner that night, I borrowed my mom's Rolleiflex camera (which is sitting in front of me as I write this) so I could take pictures of the moonwalk off the television. I remember being tuned to CBS watching Walter Cronkite describe the landing of the lunar module earlier that afternoon, and talking about the historic event we were about to witness.
As the moment approached - which was just before 10 p.m. CDT, I turned off the lights in my bedroom and, holding the camera, took the five photographs seen here beginning with "Armstrong On Moon" and ending with President Nixon's very long distance phone call to Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The images are grainy and not very high contrast, but that's the way things were back then. I just feel fortunate to have been at an age where I could appreciate the importance of the moment, and to have these photos as a personal record of that very special day.
"Astronauts Eugene A. Cernan (on left) and Harrison H. Schmitt pay their respects and send their best wishes to the members of the International Youth Science Tour, who were visiting the Manned Spacecraft Center, in brief ceremonies near the close of the third Apollo 17 Extravehicular Activity (EVA-3) at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. This picture is a reproduction taken from a color television transmission made by the color RCA TV camera mounted on the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Noting that they had collected a very significant rock composed of many fragments, Schmitt said, "A portion of a rock will be sent to a representative agency or museum in each of the countries represented by the young people in Houston today..." The more than 70 foreign students were in the U.S. visiting space research and science centers. In his closing remarks to the students Cernan remarked, "We salute you, promise of the future."
Signed & inscribed by Gene Cernan.
