Drowned in the glory of his years
And left his mate
to down herself in tears.
This is an odd one.
The work is most likely that of Thomas Johnson II.
The marble seemed out of place right away, but on closer inspection, the bottom part of the inscription is an insertion as well - both pieces appear to have been carved later than the stone around it.
They were quite possibly inserted during the early rounds of preservation attempts in Hartford's Ancient Burying Ground during the 1800's (more thorough attempts were made in the 1980's, when many stones were repaired or recreated completely).
The marble insert makes me wonder if it was taken from a different stone, or actually carved for this one.

Fort Griswold in Groton, CT, fell to the British on September 6th, 1781, during the attack by forces led by the traitor Benedict Arnold.
Many American soldiers defending the fort were reportedly killed after their surrender, including Colonel William Ledyard, commander of the defending forces, who was killed by his own sword after having handed it over to Major Bromfield of the attacking forces.
This stone lies in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton.

Detail of Lewis H. Gray obelisk; (died Dec. 20, 1849 age 18yrs 2 mos)
(I'm going to have to go back with a mirror or have someone pull back
the branches of the spruce tree).
Sharon found an article from the December 3, 1987 copy of the Norwalk
News-Trader in the Norwalk Museum files with an article by Norwood Walker entitled "Ancient Norwalk
Cemetery tells tales of the past". Mr. Walker got to know the cemetery
quite well "60 years ago". I guess that would be in about 1927.
In the article he notes part of the inscription on Lewis H. Gray's marker;
"There is a monument erected with funds contributed by commuters on the
New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad...Lewis H. Gray, injured by a
fallen locomotive engine which went through Valentine's Bridge on the
Harlem Railroad"
I would never have seen this inscription otherwise.
Here is what I could make out of the inscription;
"Lewis H. Gray who was fatally injured by the falling of the Locomotive Engine Mahopac through Valentine's Bridge on the Harlem Railroad Dec. 18 & died Dec. 20, 1849 age 18yrs & 2 mos.
Friendships Gift by the Commuters of the NY & NH Railroad."

Carver Thatcher Lathrop, one of the many Manning Imitators of the late 18th century.
The Manning Family was incredibly popular in the late 18th century, which spawned a varied group of carvers who imitated their styles to various degrees of closeness.
Thatcher Lathrop was among them.
