Ludhiana - Fuel dealers of the district today went on strike in protest against police failure to check increasing incidents of robberies at petrol stations. Squarely blaming the state government for the day-long closure of fuel stations, the Ludhiana Petroleum Dealers Association (LPDA) alleged that the police had failed to bust the gangs of robbers who are targeting fuel station employees at will.
In a veiled attack at the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for allotting gunmen to the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leaders, the LPDA office-bearers alleged that the government was more concerned about providing security to party men and was least bothered about strengthening security at fuel stations.
“Instead of providing gunmen to small-time leaders, the government should strengthen security at the fuel stations. Our employees are increasingly falling prey to the gangs of highway robbers and the police are doing nothing to check the menace,” said Vikram Datt Kapoor, an office-bearer of the LPDA.
Ashok Sachdeva, chairman of the LPDA, and Vikram Datt Kapoor were quick to maintain that their comments should not be taken as politically motivated.
“These comments should be taken in the right spirit. We are commenting on the law and order problem and not targeting any political party. We are first oil dealers, our association with any political party, be it the SAD, BJP, Congress and the AAP, comes later,” said Kapoor.
When asked what kind of security measures they want from the police, Sachdeva said: “Who are we to tell the police about security measures. We want gunmen at fuel stations. If the police can provide security to petty politicians, then why cannot they beef up security at fuel stations?”
Sachdeva added the fuel station employees were working in fear due to the rising robbery incidents. “It is for the second time that the employees of a fuel station at Hambra have been targeted by robbers. We have made several representations to the police, asking them to beef up security at stations, but nothing has been done so far,” said Sachdeva.
Jagdev Singh, treasurer of the LPDA, said much-hyped Rapid Rural Response Police Scheme (RRRPS), launched a few days ago, only existed on paper. Hardly any policeman visits a fuel station.
Manjeet Singh, general secretary of the LPDA, claimed they had asked the police to arrest the robbers at the earliest or they would close down fuel stations in the entire state. However, Sachdeva was quick to correct the statement made by Manjeet Singh. He said further course of action would be decided at a meeting with the police authorities.

Behind Pat is the oil Painting "Java Woman" 1994 by our friend, Singaporean Artist Manjeet Shergill. This painting was one of her earliest works and is one of the few that feature a strong colour palette. We acquired it when we first met Manjeet at her former Chip-bee Gardens home/gallery in 2003.
Manjeet Shergill graduated from the St. Patrick’s Art Centre , now the LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts. Apart from her native Singapore, she has also had well-received exhibitions in Bankok, Berlin and London. Her modernist painting style has been describes as "beyond categorisation, being neither realist, impressionist nor abstract. She says she improvises on the lines and compositions as she goes along, resulting in canvases that are sometimes eye-catching, sometimes plain."

This one was the only sharp image we got of the 15-20
close-ups that were taken before it finished drinking and
we had to leave as it was getting dark. It was interesting to
see how the rest of the body remains still
while only the jaw moves as it drinks.
