Here I'm backpacking with my Son Andrew on South Manitou Island. We're taking a tour of the lighthouse. As I look at the photo, I'm amazed that I'm holding onto him like I'm afraid he might fall off or something. Today, he's a Senior in High School, and he's taller than I am. I've had to let him go a bit.

PS: I forgot how long I've had my North Face Jacket. This photo was before I wrecked on my mountain bike and put a hole in it.

This is an 0-4-2T, coal-burning steam locomotive that was formerly on display in Manitou Springs, Colorado, USA, on the grounds of the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Since this photo was taken, the engine has been repainted and moved to the Broadmoor Hotel in the town of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway # 5 was built in April 1901 by Baldwin Locomotive Works. It was designed to handle the steep track grades between the town of Manitou Springs and the summit of Pike's Peak.

Manitou Springs is the little town at the base of Pikes Peak.

The morning light revealed the magnificence of North Manitou Island. The rock-free beach sands were pure white. The shallow water was nice for swimming. This is the farthest point on the island from the ferry landing so hiker traffic is light. From our campsite, we had a tree-framed view of South Manitou Island.
