The ruins of Aigai in Aiolis, northeast of Kyme and 35 km south of Bergama, have long been visible and date mainly to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site was investigated in the 1880s by R. Bohn and C. Schuchhardt. In 2004 Ersin Doğer began excavations at the site, which had been heavily plundered.

Sardis was an important ancient city and capital of the kingdom of Lydia, located in western Anatolia, present-day Sartmustafa, Manisa province in western Turkey. Its strategic location made it a central point connecting the interior of Anatolia to the Aegean coast. During its history, control of Sardis changed many times, but it always kept a high status among cities.

Note from a conscript leaving for Manisa (a calm and pleasant Aegean city, and pretty much a blessing for any conscript these days): "This departure has a return too. Beware" (Sorry for the awkward translation. It's sort of like a literal 'what goes around comes around', but I'm at a loss as to how to translate it properly. Suggestions welcome).
