Micro Flesh features five projects in which microbiology of the human body is explored in various ways: 37°C (2001/3), Micro cosm (2002/6), In-Time (2005/7), Unique (2006), Hair Lasje (2005/7).
The processual incubative installations presented as interfaces between art and science include living micro organisms, skin and hair cells. With biotechnological procedures of fragmentation and reconstruction of body, the artist manipulates living material, effecting a re-examination of the notion of living and altering the understanding of the human organism, which is undergoing profound change through tissue engineering and other microbiological procedures. Using scientific tools and methods in the sphere of art the actual social and political questions regarding biotech discourse are being discussed. The project presented at Ars Electronica is Unique, which involves the cultivation of micro cultures donated by observers.

Last week I received an assignment from CarissaObscura: simply "Blue", giving me freedom to take that one word anyway I wanted to. This idea was postponed to take pictures of feet for the TOMS Shoes/Threadless submissions. But around the same time I picked up one the latest Polaroid cameras: a digital one that prints out 2x3 adhesive images from the camera using ZINK technology. It's really sweet. The coolest thing, is that ZINK technology is heat sensitive, so I got to playing around with a lighter. Low and behold: the more heat you add, the bluer the image gets! So I that's where I took my "blue" assignment: heated Pogo manipulations.
I warmed this under a hot hot lamp and then burnt the corner and some of the edges to bring out some more blue

Shahzia Sikander manipulates hundreds of digitally animated drawings to create the idea of swarming, or collective behavior, as an observable phenomenon in Gopi-Contagion, which will be shown on Times Square’s electronic billboards from 11:57 pm to midnight each night in October.
Gopi-Contagion consists of flocking particles made up of the silhouettes of hair from the Gopi, female worshipers of the Hindu god, Krishna. Hair from the female figures is then isolated to cultivate new associations. When in motion, the silhouettes looks like insects, birds, bats, or can translate as particles. The flocking reflects behavior of cellular forms that have reached self-organized criticality, resulting in a redistribution of both visual information and experiential memory.
