the sun goes down in Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary

Mangrove forest near Quepos, Costa Rica

The Mangrove Tree Nymph is a large butterfly, with a wingspan usually exceeding 130mm and often reaching 150mm or more. It displays the aposematic black and white colours like the other species of its genus. It features large black spots on both wings where the marginal and submarginal black spots are conjoined to form an irregular black band. The post-discal triangular spots on the hindwings are large and always touching the black veins, forming a jagged black band. The wing bases are yellow tinted.

A long nature trail in mangrove forest that took us to the swamp. It was a low tide day so the roots of the trees were exposed, crabs and wading birds scour the mud flats for trapped fish and decaying matter. Boiling hot….but definitely fun! Thanks MRM!

11 AM, Bright sun. The cumulus clouds had built up through the morning, and blew off soon after I finished shooting.

July 26th is the UNESCO International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem so I thought this would be a fitting image. A scrubby old oak also claims the spot and the mangrove roots are damaged from last year's hurricane but I always see beauty when I look low through the trees like this.

Mangroves are shrubs or small trees that grow in coastal saline or brackish water. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species. Mangroves occur worldwide in the tropics and subtropics, mainly between latitudes 25° N and 25° S. In the year 2000, the area of mangroves was 53,190 square miles (137,760 km²), spanning 118 countries and territories.

Native Mangroves in South Florida thriving in salt water. The roots of the trees in the water that are above the sandy bottom will host schools of fish - fun to view when snorkeling.

One of the fun things about birding from a boat is that the birds seem to be much more tolerant of our presence from a boat. This was certainly the case during our visit to Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica this month. This Mangrove Swallow was one of many birds that allowed us to approach so close that I couldn’t focus on them anymore.

We will be doing this trip again next spring, if you think you might be interested more information is available here: www.texastargetbirds.com/group-photo-trips/2018-costa-ric...

A boat trip through the mangrove forests of Everglades National Park in Florida. Awesome nature. It feels like gliding in a natural tunnel. Great experience.

My bird of the day today is the Mangrove Warbler. I hunted for this bird for hours one day and I would catch a glimpse every now and then. Just before we had to call it a day because it was getting dark he appeared and just posed for maybe 15 minutes. I have no idea how many pictures the six of us took but I think it was probably equal to the amount of bug bites we had. We made sure to be fully covered with bug repellent after that day.
