Tossing turban style contours, with an aloofness as one passes by,
Utilizing every charm it possesses, under a lupin blue cloudless sky,
Like a guardsman, gallantly standing, holding up his noble head high,
In rainbow colours, brilliant and stately, a vision to surely yield a sigh,
Ponder thus upon the regal tulip, it has pure beauty, you cannot deny.

"Amalfi is a town and commune in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno. It lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 metres, 4,314 feet), surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. The town of Amalfi was the capital of the maritime republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Amalfi was a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy.
Amalfi is the main town of the coast on which it is located, named Costiera Amalfitana (Amalfi Coast), and is today an important tourist destination together with other towns on the same coast, such as Positano, Ravello and others. Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
A patron saint of Amalfi is Saint Andrew, the Apostle, whose relics are kept here at Amalfi Cathedral (Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea/Duomo di Amalfi).
Amalfi held importance as a maritime power, trading grain from its neighbors, salt from Sardinia and slaves from the interior, and even timber, in exchange for the gold dinars minted in Egypt and Syria, in order to buy the Byzantine silks that it resold in the West. Grain-bearing Amalfi traders enjoyed privileged positions in the Islamic ports, Fernand Braudel notes. The Amalfi tables (Tavole Amalfitane) provided a maritime code that was widely used by the Christian port cities. Merchants of Amalfi were using gold coins to purchase land in the 9th century, while most of Italy worked in a barter economy. During the late 9th century, long-distance trade revived between Amalfi and Gaeta with Byzantine, the latter which benefited from a flourishing trade network with the Arabs.
An independent republic from the 7th century until 1073, Amalfi extracted itself from Byzantine vassalage in 839 and first elected a duke in 958; it rivaled Pisa and Genoa in its domestic prosperity and maritime importance before the rise of the Republic of Venice. In spite of some devastating setbacks it had a population of some 70,000 to 80,000 reaching a peak about the turn of the millennium, during the reign of Duke Manso (966–1004). Under his line of dukes, Amalfi remained independent, except for a brief period of Salernitan dependency under Guaimar IV.
In 1073, the republic fell to the Norman countship of Apulia, but was granted many rights. A prey to the Normans who encamped in the south of Italy, it became one of their principal posts. However, in 1131, it was reduced by Roger II of Sicily, who had been refused the keys to its citadel. The Holy Roman Emperor Lothair, fighting in favor of Pope Innocent II against Roger, who sided with the Antipope Anacletus, took him prisoner in 1133, assisted by forty-six Pisan ships. The Pisans, commercial rivals of the Amalfitani, sacked the city; Lothair claimed as part of the booty a copy of the Pandects of Justinian which was found there.
In 1135 and 1137, it was taken by the Pisans and rapidly declined in importance, though its maritime code, known as the Amalfian Laws, was recognized in the Mediterranean until 1570. A tsunami in 1343 destroyed the port and lower town, and Amalfi never recovered to anything more than local importance" (Wikipedia).

Kittycats Advent calendar is on location. Plus folks who love kittycats made little vignettes. Voting on the vignettes is finished.
Note on the location in general: it's a winter scene with igloos. the exhibits are set up in the igloos. In the middle is a lake, if you click on the center of the lake, it will ask to animate you and your walk will change to ice skating. To stop it, just click again and click stop.
This urban scene is inside igloo 18. Various sits in igloo 18 in the alley scene and also above in the dream scene. The robot (me) is not part of the scene. I just used the sit in the ladder.

After accidentally trespassing, Mandingo Quan and Wendy Xeno invited me to the Hazarous to take some pictures. This is one from the entry point; click on a marked tile at the landing point or have a bath to be taken to the new landscape and don't be afraid to fall into the gorge and click on other objects to be transported to hidden places.
The other great news is that Wendy and Dingo have also made just about everything and there are plans for a shop to be opened in the future.
The sense of wandering a broad landscape yet belonging intimately is hard for me to describe but it's pure mastery of scale.

Romanian postcard by Casa Filmului Acin, no. 212. James Caan in El Dorado (Howard Hawks, 1967).
On 6 July 2022, American actor James Caan (1940) died. He was best known for his role as Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's classic The Godfather (1972), for which he received an Oscar nomination. Caan was 82
James Edmund Caan was born in New York in 1939 or 1940 (the sources differ). His parents, Arthur and Sophie Caan, were Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. After immigration, his father became a kosher butcher in New York. Caan grew up in the Sunnyside district of Queens. At school, he excelled in sports such as basketball and American football. He first studied economics at Michigan State University and later at Hofstra University. During his studies, he discovered acting. Caan eventually graduated from the New York drama school Neighborhood Playhouse, where the legendary Sanford Meisner was one of his teachers. Caan made his debut in the off-Broadway production 'La Ronde' and went on to work in off-Broadway and Broadway productions such as 'I Roam' and 'Mandingo'. He exited the latter Broadway production after just four performances because of artistic difficulties with star Franchot Tone. After this, he ended up on television, appearing in episodes of several television series, such as The Untouchables and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Caan made his film debut in a small, uncredited role as a sailor in Irma la Douce (Billy Wilder, 1963), starring Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. A larger film role was that of a villain in the thriller Lady in A Cage (Walter Grauman, 1964) opposite Olivia de Havilland. He had his first leading role in the auto-racing drama Red Line 7000 (Howard Hawks, 1965). In 1967, Caan appeared alongside John Wayne and Robert Mitchum in the Western El Dorado (Howard Hawks, 1967) and in 1968 in Countdown (Robert Altman, 1968). Caan received the first good reviews after his role as a deranged footballer in The Rain People (1969), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. In 1971, he received an Emmy nomination for the role of dying American football player Brian Piccolo in the television film Brian's Song. It meant his breakthrough to the general public. A year later, Coppola gave him the role of gangster Sonny Corleone in The Godfather (1972), which earned him an Academy Award nomination, among others. From 1973 to 1982, Caan appeared in several Hollywood films. He played all kinds of roles, to avoid being typecast as a gangster. Some of these films include The Gambler, for which he received a Golden Globe nominee, Funny Lady alongside Barbra Streisand, Sam Peckinpah's The Killer Elite, Norman Jewison's Rollerball, in which he played a futuristic sports hero, and the star-studded war film A Bridge Too Far. He also made a brief appearance in The Godfather: Part II. Many of the films he made at the time, such as Freebie and the Bean, Harry and Walter Go to New York, the Western Comes a Horseman () co-starring Jane Fonda and Chapter Two, were flops.
In 1980, James Caan directed Hide in Plain Sight, a film about a father searching for his children who he cannot reach because of a witness protection programme. Despite good reviews, the film did not become a hit. A year later, Caan appeared in Thief, a film by Michael Mann, in which he played a professional safecracker. The film would later become a cult classic. Caan has often said that this is the role he is most proud of, next to his role in The Godfather. However, Caan's career had hit the skids and he did not appear in any more films after the romantic film Kiss Me Goodbye (1982) flopped. He suffered from depression caused by the death of his sister and he struggled with a growing cocaine addiction. He returned to film in 1987 thanks to an old friend, Francis Ford Coppola. He gave Caan the role of a sergeant in the war drama Gardens of Stone. In 1988 and 1990, Caan starred in popular films such as the Sci-Fi Alien Nation and Dick Tracy. His career was revived in the early 1990s with Misery (Rob Reiner, 1990), an Stephen King adaptation in which he starred as a novelist held captive by a deranged fan. In 1992, he starred in the hit Honeymoon in Vegas alongside Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker. James Caan's character was a parody of Sonny Corleone, his character from The Godfather. In 1996, Caan appeared in the successful independent film Bottle Rocket and alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Eraser. Since 2003, Caan played the role of "Big Ed" Deline, the manager of the Montecito casino, in the television series "Las Vegas". In 2007, he quit the series to focus on his film career. He appeared in projects that ran the gamut from big to small. He'd appear in comedies like Mickey Blue Eyes and Elf, thrillers like City of Ghosts and In the Shadows, and indie films like Lars Von Trier's Dogville and Tony Kaye's Detachment. has been married four times. In 1960, he married Dee Jay Mathis; they had one child together and separated in 1966. His second marriage was very short-lived. He married Sheila Ryan in 1976, but a year later the marriage was over. They had one son together, Scott, who would later become an actor. Between September 1990 and 1995, he was married to Ingrid Hajek. In 1995, he married again, this time to Linda Stokes. Ten years later, in April 2005, this marriage was also over. Linda Stokes and Caan had two children. James Caan died in 2022 at the age of 82 in Los Angeles.

Vintage press photo. Gina Gershon and Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls (Paul Verhoeven, 1995).
Paul Verhoeven's American erotic drama Showgirls (1995) is a curious phenomenon. The critics dubbed the production one of the worst films of its era. Showgirls "won" at the 1996 Razzie Awards for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Leading Actor (Elizabeth Berkley), Worst Female Newcomer (Berkley), and Worst Picture Couple as well as Worst Original Movie Song. Verhoeven was the first celebrity ever who came to receive his Razzies. In the years after its original release, Showgirls gained cult status, grossed over $100,000,000 on rentals, and made it into MGM's top 20 best-selling titles. And in recent years, the film has been subject to critical re-evaluation, with more and more notable directors and critics considering it a serious satire worthy of praise.
Elizabeth Berkley plays Nomi, a "street-smart" drifter who ventures to Las Vegas. She is determined to make a name as a dancer while putting her unspoken past behind her. Her tough, streetwise veneer is not as infallible as she would like. In Vegas, she becomes more cautious in the way she approaches strangers who seem willing to help her purely out of the goodness of their hearts. Her talent and connections in combination are only able to get her a job at the Cheetah Club, a strip joint. Her first true friend in Vegas, Molly Abrams (Gina Ravera), works as the costumer for Goddess, the topless production at the Stardust. It is through Molly that Nomi catches the eye of Goddess' headliner, Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon). Nomi has a love/hate feeling toward Cristal: she doesn't much like her but wants to become her.
At IMDb, the film's got a 4.9 rating but most of the more recent reviews of Showgirls are remarkably positive about the film. "Read between the lines!", "A Misunderstood Classic", "A really fun movie...despite what the critics say!", "This wonderful film only gets better with each viewing" and "Greatest critique of American culture since CITIZEN KANE" are some of the headlines of the IMDb reviews. Critics such as Jonathan Rosenbaum and Jim Hoberman, as well as filmmakers Jim Jarmusch, Adam McKay, and Jacques Rivette, have also gone on the record defending Showgirls as a serious satire. In a 1998 interview, Rivette called it "one of the great American films of the last few years", though "very unpleasant: it's about surviving in a world populated by assholes, and that's Verhoeven's philosophy". Quentin Tarantino has stated that he enjoyed Showgirls, referring to it in 1996 as the "only ... other time in the last twenty years [that] a major studio made a full-on, gigantic, big-budget exploitation movie", comparing it to Mandingo. Showgirls has been compared to All About Eve (1950) as a remake, update, or rip-off of that film. For Jonathan Rosenbaum, "Showgirls has to be one of the most vitriolic allegories about Hollywood and selling out ever made". "Verhoeven may be the bravest and most assured satirist in Hollywood, insofar as he succeeds in making big genre movies no one knows whether to take seriously or not", Michael Atkinson has written.
In Slant Magazine's four-out-of-four-star review, Eric Henderson rejects the "so-bad-it's-good" interpretation and lauds the film as "one of the most honest satires of recent years", stating that the film targets Hollywood's "morally bankrupt star-is-born tales." Henderson draws from a round-table discussion in Film Quarterly in which others argue its merits. Noël Burch attests that the film "takes mass culture seriously, as a site of both fascination and struggle" and uses melodrama as "an excellent vehicle for social criticism." In the same round-table, Chon Noriega suggests that the film has been misinterpreted and the satire overlooked because "the film lacks the usual coordinates and signposts for a critique of human vice and folly provided by sarcasm, irony, and caustic wit." The Guardian commented in 2020: "With Showgirls, the target was the American dream itself – and the dishonest "star is born” narratives churned out to sustain it. If Showgirls has a message, it’s that the game is rigged for women like Nomi. She thinks she’s climbing the pole but really she’s just spinning round it. The real power lies with the men running the racket. Nobody wanted to hear that at the time; maybe they’re ready to now. In its own messy way, Showgirls is a #MeToo story with a male gaze.

Zeit vom Nordosten her gekommenen Semiten.
Kunde den Norden A.s innehaben. Zeit in A. eingewanderten Semiten gehören dem arab. Stamme an.
Aufl., Wien 1879): Th. Waitz, Anthropologie der Naturvölker, Bd. 2: Die Negervölker (Lpz. 1860); G. Fritsch, Die Eingeborenen Südafrikas (Bresl. 1873); Rob. Hartmann, Die Nigritier, Tl. 1 (Berl. 1876); ders., Die Völker A.s (Lpz. 1879); Lepsius, Nub. Aufl., Lpz. 1894).

Im in love with the open plan store design ( like a cabaret set ) and the "indoor" garden idea, all looks so right and well balanced, this is how a SL store has to look anno 2013 !

Vintage press photo. Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls (Paul Verhoeven, 1995).

According to a 2001 national census which surveyed 11.2 million Cubans, 1.1 million Cubans described themselves as Black, while 2.8 million considered themselves to be "mulatto" or "mestizo". Thus a significant proportion of those living on the island affirm some African ancestry. The matter is further complicated by the fact that a fair number of people still locate their origins in specific African ethnic groups or regions, particularly Yoruba, Igbo and Congo, but also Arará, Carabalí, Mandingo, Fula, Makua, and others. Nevertheless, and despite the egalitarian project of the Cuban revolution, racial discrimination still exists in Cuba. Many Afro-Cubans complain that they are refused employment in the lucrative tourism industry, where Cubans make in tips weekly what doctors and other professionals make in months.
Afro-Cuban music involves two main categories of music, religious and profane. Religious music includes the chants, rhythms and instruments used in rituals of the above-mentioned religious currents, while profane music focuses largely on rumba, guaguanco and comparsa (carnival music) as well as several lesser styles such as the tumba francesa. It is an acknowledged fact, however, that practically all Cuban music has been influenced by African music, particularly regarding rhythm.
